Possible Malware via steam chat?

Hi

I think i might have caught a Trojan via steamchat.

While in chat, i clicked on a link, chrome opened up, and something downloaded in chrome. The whole thing strikes me as odd. it was supposed to be a screen shot, but nothing showed up.

I started a security scan right after the incident, but nothing seems to be showing up.

any input would be appreciated.

Re: Possible Malware via steam chat?

Hello philthymcnasty

If you suspect that you may have malware, please do nothing more than run a full scan with your Norton product. Please tell us what your product is and the version of it. Please do not upload the possible malware file here. If your Norton product full scan doesn't clean it up, then I would say do not do anything else but sign up with one of the free malware removal sites. Do not try any self fixes. Just pick one of the sites and register with them and wait your turn. Then follow directions to the letter. Don't follow any one else's corrections because each computer is unique and the cleaning up process is also unique. Don't try to get a head start by doing any scans unless asked and told to do a scan or run a program or post anything unless asked by the specialist. They do have strict rules to be followed or else they won't help you. Here is the list.

(Thanks to Delph for providing the list of sites)

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users. The new site is listed first in this link.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

So, even an on demand scan with MBAM will be frowned upon....has the Community changed it's almost ubiquitous policy of recommending users to MBAM

Hello bjm

I know that at least 1 site frowns on the use of even MBAM, that is even the free one.

Re: Possible Malware via steam chat?

....and is that info specifically posted on that site.....so, as a Norton Guru are you recommending Norton users stop using MBAM / on demand second opinion scanners for concern that Malware Removal Forum(s) may refuse to help ?

Thanks for the quick replies.

I use Norton 360. I am currently running a full system scan. Afterwards, i will check out the list of sites to see which one i should go to.

Re: Possible Malware via steam chat?

Hello bjm

I can't find the thread right now in the Forum. I had recommended the user to run a scan with his Norton product and a quick scan with the free MBAM. If that didn't fix the malware problem which was some Adware malware then to try 1 from the list of sites we give out. A day or two later, someone came to that thread and posted I could fix the problem for that O/P because he had run advanced tools. I don't know if the user then tried one of the other sites or not.

So now if someone has a malware problem, I tell them to do a scan with their Norton product and then I recommend to go to one of the recommended sites.

Re: Possible Malware via steam chat?

Ok,

So nothing has shown up on my norton scan. While the scan was going on, i visited the steam forums(because this is a security issue with steam), and read more about the attack, the file needs to be executed in order to install the malware. I did not execute the file, so it appears that nothing has been installed on my computer.

I am still going to go through the list of sites flopot mentioned, and use one of the services.  but so far it looks like i might have dodged a bullet.

It appears that this type of attack is becoming more common for steam users. I will inform you guys of what the malware sites find.

Re: Possible Malware via steam chat?

I think .scr is a screensaver file but the malware may not execute until you try to install/run it.

phil...

That doesn't sound like a very good idea to me since you said you thought you got infected from the steam site!

I would myself suggest not doing anything while scanning for infections that you fear you have and certainly not going on line to where you think you may have gotten it, even if not to chat!
