A2221 error while doing backup

I am a relatively new user of Norton Online BackUp and not overly tech savvy

I started by backing up my documents and pictures and that workied fine without incident

Based on that experience, I purchased some additional storage capacity and extended the backup to include my email accounts

I have run the backup twice and it fails to complete but it fails at exactly the same point (ie exactly the same number of files transferred and exactly the same backup Gb transfer)

I have received an error A2221 message but I cannot find an explanation of this and so don't know what it means let alone what I should do to solve the problem

Any suggestions?

Re: A2221 error while doing backup

Hello John,

The error you are looking at is specific to your file selection.  Have you tried deselecting back to your original file selection and running a test backup?  If the test backup works in this case we recommend running a scan disc on your PC to check for errors.  Also you can verify your files and folders through windows explorer. Next try reselecting the folders one at a time for backup and running a manual backup to verify which location is causing the error to pop up.  Please advise of the results.

Re: A2221 error while doing backup

Hello John,

Here is a little more information on the A2221 error message:

The 2221 error is file not found on openthefile. In English that means there was a file selected for backup at one point. It was deleted mid-backup recently and now the backup job is still trying to locate it. That's resulting in that error preventing it from completing correctly.

Re: A2221 error while doing backup

I have had this same issue repeatedly since January, and wasted at least three hours on the phone with three separate Norton techs who were no help whatsoever (although they all had the "corporate help speak" down pat, assuring me they'd be able to fix the trouble {which they didn't}).  Suggestions that I reinstall Norton Online Backup (in my experience, this is Norton tech's detault answer to any problem) didn't work on three attempts, but after a fourth reinstall backup began to work again (for a while).  I'm suspicious the reinstall cure was just a coincidence, however; because if it was the solution, why didn't it work on the first three reinstalls.  I've had issues off and on for over a year with this product, and that the issues (eventually) seem to cure themselves make me wonder if Norton is having server issues.  I'm beginning to think the best fix is to use another company's backup product, especially given all the issues reported on these community pages.

Re: A2221 error while doing backup

I question the suggestion that a file being deleted mid-backup caused the A2221 error messsage.  I manually run NOBU while not working on any files (so there wouldn't be any files being deleted mid-backup) and have received this error message many times since January, 2013.  And even if a mid-backup file deletion would cause the error, why would I get this same error message during 10+ successive backup attempts?

Re: A2221 error while doing backup

Hello Pap,

In this case it is always a good idea to completely clear your file selection.  Save it with nothing selected and then reselect a small set of files as a test.  Once it completes to add back in the rest of your file selection.  If the error happens again then there is a remnant of a file left somewhere in your selected files that the Norton Online Backup is finding. The next thing to do in this case would be to run a disc clean up and disc defragment, and a scan disc would work as well.
