About One-Third of My Ports are Not Stealthed

Hi :-)

Shields-Up tells me about 1/3 of my ports are not stealthed. No Ports are open. Last night all my Ports were Stealthed.

Another oddity. This is a different PC than the one that had the open Port 554 Problem.

BUT, an add devices run now shows that same "Adam-Notebook Laptap" with a Laptop icon and an Unknown Device with a server icon that showed up on the PC with an open port 554.

Hello hok

Have you rebooted your modem lately?

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

How and why to check port 32764 on your router
Get in to your modem/router/gateway and bump Firewall level to High.  Then configure OpenDNS.  Then mask your IP

Re: About One-Third of My Ports are Not Stealthed

Hello floplot and bjm :-)

I rebooted my modem last Friday.

I do not use a router, I connect directly to my modem with a cable.

I tested again today with similar results.

I had attempted to attach a zipped jpg redacted screen shot of my test results of this afternoon.

[I have deleted the screen shot as when I open it on my PC it exposes part of my Windows File Explorer. I assume it would only do that on my PC but in an overabundance of caution I removed it from the post]

LOL. I first tried to upload the jpeg and then discovered that we can only attach txt, pdf, and zip files. I have always used WinRAR that compresses to a rar file. SOOO, I downloaded a trial version of WinZip from the official store site. During the download Norton Insight detected a suspicious cloud service and removed it. (WinZip has a cloud upload service - don't know if it was that which was removed.)

After installing WinZip I discovered my Browser had been hijacked by that Volterian (or whatever it's called) search engine thing. Of course uninstalling it using control panel did not remove it but I have been able to change my home page and default search engine. I don't see any unusual services running, but I'll worry about that later. In any event, this is the PC that I will be returning for a refund and have been wiping free space for days and plan on doing a Windows Reset on it when my new PC arrives.

Hello hok

May I suggest that you get a router for the extra protection. A good router has a firewall in it which will help to keep malware out of your computer. You should use a router even if you only have 1 computer.

Thanks floplot :-)

I have always avoided a router because I have read so many posts on various forums about problems by peeps who have various issues after installing a router.

Re: About One-Third of My Ports are Not Stealthed

Can anyone suggest a possible reason why so many of my ports are not stealthed?

Very early-on, maybe 9/28/14, I had a similar experience with not all my ports being stealthed.

A few days later, a Symantec Employee posted that the issue had been fixed in an update and thanked me for reporting the issue.

Hello hok

Please remember that in most Forums including this one, we only hear from people who have problems. Please remember we very seldom hear from users who love the product and have no problems. I assure you that you will always find users out there who don't post in Forums. On second thought, you won't find them since they don't post in Forums. My modem is a modem/router from my ISP.

The router though will help Norton and you won't have many infections or malware. That's my opinion.

Does your modem have a firewall.   Maybe you have a modem/router

I use a router for the reasons  floplot stated (as well as the ports and WiFi) and Shields Up said all my ports were protected. So take it's advice and install a wireless router and password protect it.

Instead of buying WinZip that is bloatware now, download the free 7-zip that will deal with rar as well as zip and other archives.

Re: About One-Third of My Ports are Not Stealthed

Thanks huwyngr for the tip about 7-zip. I have been using PCs for more years than I'd like to admit :-) and have never considered buying a zip program. Until today, I have found WinRAR to be all I need but will def. get 7-zip and will be very be careful where I download it from and be on guard for any checked installation boxes. I was impressed by Norton Insight catching and removing the suspicious cloud exe. which may have been related to the hijacker.

I downloaded and scanned with the Mbam and enabled trial of full version. Never had it on this PC before. It found 6 pup entries and quarantined them. Have no issues with that browser hijacker that I know of.

I'll def consider a router, but am till concerned as to why NS is not stealthing all my ports, it did stealth them during the weekend but not as of last night. Not that it makes a heck of a lot of difference, since many excellent filewalls don't stealth all. It could be the fault of the PC I am using and will be returning for a refund after a secure wipe. It is really messed up - first the discrete graphics card was dead on arrival-and then the hard drive froze--somehow I was able to get it going again, but there are tons of issues with it after I did a refresh.

Re: About One-Third of My Ports are Not Stealthed

I downloaded and scanned with the Mbam and enabled trial of full version.

Although there are at least two schools of thought on this, remember that the "full version" and therefore the trial is an interactive protective device, similar to others, and there may be interference between it and in this case with Norton as they both tackle the same protective functions.

The free version does not contain (or rather it is inactivated) the interactive function and is recommended as a cleanup device rather than a protective one.

I believe you can disable the interactive function in the trial of the Full Version in which case I'd suggest doing that and see if it then continues after the free trail period is over without too much nagging. If not then uninstall it and install the specific Free Version.

That's my 2¢ .... others may (and do) differ ....
