Adobe Flash Freezes/Crashes Firefox 35

Whenever I go to most sites that use or has a link to one of it's pages that uses Adobe Flash, the browser, FF35, will freeze and I get a warning that Adobe Flash Plug-In Container has crashed. The only was to close the page, which also crashes the browser, is to click on the box "stop the plug-in" or use Task Manager.." What's really bad is that when I reopen FF, unless I am VERY quick, the browser opens to the last page, which is the one that froze and crashed the browser-rinse-wash-repeat.

This does not happen with IE11. Some FF pages allow the Flash Player to operate, but the image appears only  after a 10-30 second delay. Using Windows 8.1. Have uninstalled and reinstalled latest Adobe Flash several times.

Is this happening with anyone else? Could the Norton Toolbar be playing a role here???

Hello hok

Have you tried reinstalling FireFox? There is also usually a Windows Update about the Flash Player. Also, check  to see if the flash player is enabled in manage add-ons. I am assuming there is something like that in Win 8 or 8.1.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Hey hok

If you're still having Flash issues.  I disabled Flash Protected Mode via mms.cfg.  Seems OK.

EDIT:  Rolled back to Protected Mode and changed Storage setting.  Now, we're good.   What's your Storage setting.  Allow or Ask or Block

LOL :-)  Sounds great, but I have no idea what you are talking about. Don't try to explain now.....I'll do a little study first.

My storage setting is set at ALLOW.

Re: Adobe Flash Freezes/Crashes Firefox 35

Hi F4E :-)

I never have an issue with Flash on IE

The problem is when I use my preferred browser FF35

It varies from site to site. But one extreme example is The Washington Post. I can view the first page fine, but whenever I click on any link to a story, my browser freezes, the linked page does not show, and then I get the warning pop up that Flash Plug-in Container has stopped working. I need to click in the box "stop the script" or use task manager to close FF.

Some other sites that use Flash my browser does not freeze. I can click on a flash video-the sound starts immediately but it can take 10- 20 seconds before the video appears.

I believe this started with FF35

Thanks bjm for the link. While I have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash I have not uninstalled and reinstalled FF35

Also as far as anti-executables I use Bitdefender Anti-CryptoWall which is said to be effective against Cryptowall 1 and 2. It's a free download. Aside from real-time anti-ransomware protection, this application integrates an immunization technique that prevents executables from the 'AppData' and 'Startup' folders to launch.

No knowledge of Bitdefender app.  Does it have an events log.  Maybe plugin exe is blocked.

Don't know if this link is the same problem that you are experiencing, but this person in the Mozilla Forum fixed it by updating video driver.

Ok here's a clue to why Firefox 35 has trouble with Flash. The latest Flash Player for 8.1 has no setting for hardware acceleration. Ignorance is bliss TY Mozilla :-)

Who uses the Online Settings Manager?  #

Beginning with Flash Player 10.3, the Local Settings Manager supersedes the Online Settings Manager for managing global settings on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.

Hello hok and bmj_

I just read in my email newsletter this morning that there is another security risk in Adobe Flash which I believe is in the wild. Even though the latest Flash just came out a few days ago, there will be another patch in a couple of days. It was suggested to turn off Flash for a couple of days until the patch comes out. Maybe this is what is causing you the Flash problem now with FireFox and Flash.

I know this is a month late, but hardware acceleration is available in flash and has always been there. The problem is if flash crashes it is not easy to get to the setting.

The trick to finding the setting: right click on a flash video and choose "settings" (ignore "global settings"). You should see the option on the first settings tab. If you are having issues getting to the settings due to the crashing, try launching a full screen video in Steam. You can right click on that and disable hardware acceleration in flash. Fire Fox will then work with flash.

Quick tip: The Fire Fox nightly beta works with flash and hardware acceleration.

I myself am having the crashing issue and my guess for others with this same issue, it might be an Nvidia driver issue. We will need to wait for a driver update or one of the FF nightly builds to be an official release.

Well I am looking forward to Nvidia driver V 349.09 that the poster claims solved his flash/FF problems. Nvidia Driver v. 349.09 should be ready for download in early 2017 as the most current driver is V 347.92 which was released 2 weeks ago and has been of no help to me with my flash /FF problems . :-))

No offense intended floplot - I was just amused by the post-it must have been a typo by the poster-whatever-latest driver does nothing for me.

I'm learning to do without Flash on FF.

It's just one of those things-who knows whats causing the problem on an individual system-evidently the latest Nvida driver has helped some, but not me.

Can someone please tell me how to block tracking cookies in IE 11 . That's one of my major issues with viewing flash on IE; There are several extensions that are available to block tracking cookies on FF, but I am not familiar with any in IE 11 and I can't do a NS scan every time I use and close IE, or does a Quick NS scan catch tracking cookies? I currently do a cleanse with CC Cleaner every time I open IE 11 to view a Flash Video to get get rid of tracking cookies. I find them offensive.

Re: Adobe Flash Freezes/Crashes Firefox 35

Hi, hok. In NS you can go to Settings in the UI/Antivirus/Scans and Risks and you will see the Tracking Cookies scan options.

I also use CCleaner, but you can also set the Tracking Cookies Scan to Remove.

Here is the Norton KB info.

Your options are:

  • Remove

    Automatically removes tracking cookies.

Your Norton product does not quarantine tracking cookies. If you choose to remove tracking cookies, you cannot restore them from the quarantine.

  • Ignore

Automatically ignores the tracking cookies that are detected.

  • Ask Me

Provides you the greatest control by notifying you when the tracking cookies are detected.

You can choose to remove or ignore tracking cookies.

Hi Hok,

With IE, blocking & tracking is controlled via Add-ons.  You need to go into "Manage Add-ons" (via the Tools Menu "Gear Icon") and locate the "Tracking Protection" section under "Add-on Types".  From there you can either create your own custom protection list(s) or you can subscribe to one of the preexisting lists (available via "Get a Tracking Protection List online").  Note too that there are many other Ad & TP lists available besides those shown at the Microsoft "Tracking & Protection Lists" website - For example, I prefer to use the FanBoy Ad & TP lists (for IE) since they closely approximate the lists used by AdblockPlus for FF.

Cheers!

John

Edit:  PS - If interested, the Fanboy lists for IE are available at: http://www.fanboy.co.nz/ie.html - The website states that they are for use with IE9, but they also work fine with IE10 and IE11.

Hello Hok

No offense taken. Has FF 36 been any help? I don't use Firefox, but I did see that other site. I should have looked to see what driver I had. The free version of SuperAntiSpyware also has a tracking cookie scanner.

In IE 11, go to Internet Options> Privacy. There is a slider where you can control the type of cookies you will allow or block.

This is done on the latest Fire Fox. If it crashes, you will not be able to bring up the menu in the first picture. This is why I suggested to use Steam (you should have it installed if you are a gamer). Within Steam, run a video (not a game) full screen. This will run the video in flash and it will not crash. Then right click on the video and choose the options I have in the pictures above.

By any chance, do you have a 900 series Nvidia card? The Flash issue popped up for me when I updated to a 980GTX. Latest driver is still a dud for Flash and Fire Fox.

Thanks F4E - Will a quick scan with NS remove tracking cookies?

Thanks floplot :-) LMAO, I didn't even know there was a FF36 :-) By old habit I have options set to not automatically download new versions of FF from a time when the security popular security suite I was using could take a month before it's browser plugins were able to catch up with Mozilla. - no need for that now - but hard to teach an old dog new tricks...I'll give it a try

Thanks John. I'll give that a try. I had no idea that such a tool existed :-) I'd be willing to wager that less than 2% of Flash users know about it.

In any event, I'd like to share the following that puts Flash/FF problems and everything else into proper perspective:
