After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

Up graded my Windows 8.1 Laptop to Windows 10. Now both Windows Defender and Norton Security both appear to be on. I can't believe that is normal operation.

Might have something to do with this:

"Microsoft has made some bold promises about improvements to security in Windows 10. Chris Hallum, a senior product marketing manager for Microsoft, said in an interview that because of all the security enhancements in Windows 10, consumers and businesses won’t have to install additional security software to protect their machines. “We include a full-fledged antivirus solution in Windows,” he said.

I would if your using your own AV.

Wonder if this guy knows what he is talking about???? He's got screen shots.

"What if You Install Another Antivirus?

Windows 10 will automatically disable Windows Defender if you install another anti-malware program. It won’t continue performing real-time scans, so it won’t interfere with your other antivirus. Try to open the Windows Defender settings pane with another antivirus installed and you’ll find every option grayed out. Click the “Use Windows Defender” link and you’ll be informed Windows Defender has been disabled. Windows Defender will pop-up and say "This app has been turned off and isn’t monitoring your computer.”
If you uninstall the other antivirus, Windows Defender will kick into gear once again and take over, providing antivirus protection."

He has a screen shot that clearly demonstrates this. It's in the last paragraph on the page.

If you scroll down you should see an option to Use Windows Defender.  If you click that it should say WD has been turned off.

Ah, that's different to mine.  Those sliders are greyed out and not selectable.  Maybe a reinstall will sort that out.

What does it show if you go to Control Panel >  System and Security > Security and Maintenance?

Hello.I have seen this behavior on many machines with many different a/v solutions.I have found the following to work well to disable win defender:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run box. Type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
  2. In the left pane of Local Group Policy Editor, navigate to the following location:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Defender
  1. In the right pane you will see a policy labeled “Turn off Windows Defender“. Double-click on that policy and set it to Enabled.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

I uninstalled NS, ran the NRT a couple times and then reinstalled. It appears to be working properly now. Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are both now showing as off.

It is apparent to me that before upgrading to Windows 10 that NS/NIS should removed from the the PC first and then reinstalled after a successful upgrade of the operating system (which was my original plan, but thanks to Microsoft downloading the Windows 10 upgrade as an important update, not an optional update, when I was trying to update Windows 8.1 with a different update I accidentally started the upgrade to 10). I won't be upgrading any of my other Windows 8.1 PCs to 10 anytime soon.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

Hi

I updated to Windows 10 yesterday evening and haven't really had any problems with it up till now.

I turned the fast boot time option off in Windows in case it caused any conflicts with Norton like it used to in Windows 8.0/8.1. I then turned my computer off for the night and then have just booted it up this morning.

I got  Windows message in the bottom right saying something about my fire wall not being enabled despite the fact that Norton had a green tick. It then asked me if I wanted to have Windows firewall as my firewall or Norton 360 as the firewall. I then clicked Norton 360 and it asked if I wanted to run the program for some reason? I clicked it and then the message went away. I then had a browse through Norton and everything seemed fine, I then had a little look at Windows firewall and that seemed fine too? I didn't have time to get some screen shots but I wish I did now!!

I'm just wondering if this was anything to do with me turning off the fast boot up within Windows or if it's time to do a fresh reinstall of Norton

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Best Regards.

Thanks for reporting this issue @AudiA1,

This seems to be similar to the issue reported here.

Could you please check if both your Norton 360 and Windows Defender is Active as mentioned in the above thread?

Hello Mohan_G

Thank you for the fast reply.

Thank you for the link to the other thread you sent me I've had a little look over it and I then checked the status of the Windows firewall by going through control panel. And when I click on Windows firewall it says 'These settings are being managed by vender application Norton 360'. And when I try to open up Windows Defender through the search bar it tells me that the application has been turned off and isn't monitoring my computer.

But the thing that gets me is when I go into settings using the start button of Windows and then 'Update and Security' and then click windows defender it says that everything there is turned on and it won't let me disable it because it's all greyed out!

Am I any less protected if I have both of these running at the same time? And is there any chance they may clash?

Best Regards.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

I just installed Windows 10 and cannot disable Microsoft's Windows Defender.  The only option Microsoft offers is to turn it off but then after several hours Microsoft automatically turns it back on.  Is there any way to completely disable this program.  I really don't want to run two virus programs at the same time.  I only want my Norton Anti-Virus program to run.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

I can confirm that I have this issue to on both of my windows 10 computers. The curious thing was that an older version of norton disabled windows defender properly.

I first installed Norton 360 version 21.something from comcast which of course was buggy and not compatible but it did disable windows defender properly.

After I removed it, I found the updated version 22.something and it works fine, but windows defender is also enabled.

To remedy this, I made the following registry edit as gpedit.msc didn't exist on my computer with the home edition, only the one with the pro edition:

LOCAL MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Policies->Microsoft->Windows Defender
Create new DWORD "DisableAntiSpyware"
Set value to "1"

After reboot, windows defender is disabled properly

I have the latest Norton Security Suite running in Windows 10  22.5.2.15    I noticed Windows Defender is still running.  It is safe to disable it?  I don't need it to also run to protect my system do I?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

The whole reason this thread is here is that Windows defender should be disabled when Norton is installed. Having 2 antiviruses running at once causes lots of issues because they fight each other. It's perfectly safe to disable Windows defender if you installed Norton

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

The only way to disable Defender I found out is to edit the Group policy settings as outlined in an earlier post. I followed the directions in this website: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5918-windows-defender-turn-off-window...

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

FWIW

When first installing Windows 10 on a Windows 7 Home Premium laptop I noticed that both Norton and Windows Defender appeared to be turned on however, after a shutdown and turn on (not restart) all was well with Norton reporting it was turned on with Windows Defender turned off.

It also seems that in Windows 10 Pro there is the option to have Windows Fast Start which is on by default but in Windows 10 Home it appears there is no option to Fast Start. Not sure if this is a difference between Pro & Home or if it makes a difference which OS was installed before the upgrade. Windows 10 Home was installed on a W7 Home Premium and Windows 10 Pro on W8.1.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

Hi.

Every time I boot up my computer I get the same notification saying that my firewall is off and my antivirus/spyware is off. When I click it, it comes up with a box telling me to turn Norton or Windows firewall on like in my previous post. It then brings up another box saying that both Norton and Windows firewall are off and then it quickly corrects it's self and says Norton is on.

This is starting to get quite annoying. I'm going to try and turn fast start up back on and see if that makes a difference. Hopefully it doesn't effect Norton

Cheers.

A quick edit instead of posting again. I turned fast start up on and rebooted and didn't get the notification come up. I'm not sure how long I will keep fast start up on because I encountered a bunch of problems with Norton while using it. And I remember it used to just hold on the shut down screen for 5-10 minutes before actually shutting down.....

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

I had the same issue with Windows 8.1 after latest updates and W 10. Search Defender, click on Windows Defender. You will see that Real Time Scan is disabled but Action Center says it's ON.  I tried several security products with the same result. Microsoft claims that with Windows 10 there is no need for any other A/V Product. LOL. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. It's not a NS issue.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

So I did some more troubleshooting and think I found a less hacky fix. After removing norton once more with NRT, I did not reboot but shutdown my computer. Then I cold booted, confirmed windows defender was on, and reinstalled norton. After this, I shut down the computer (NOT restart). Upon cold booting, windows defender was disabled like it should be and norton worked fine. As mentioned in a few posts above, I believe this may have something to do with fast boot. Regardless of the cause, it appears that doing complete shut downs rather than reboots fixes the issue.

Edit: This worked flawlessly on both of my computers (a desktop and laptop, very different hardware between the two).

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

Is this a new thing? Is Norton 360 farming out scans, etc. to Windows Defender in Windows 10? When these Defender alerts/messages demanding that it be given access to do it's scans first started, I thought it was just an issue of my PC just needing to be restarted after installing the N360 update after the Windows 10 upgrade, however the messages persist. In fact I just got another one. Do I need to go into the settings and turn Defender off myself or as I asked earlier...is Norton outsourcing to Defender? Was this just an oversight in adapting N360 to the Windows 10 environment?

Hi JT10:

I don't have an answer for you but you might find some helpful information in sewing1243's thread After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active. All Norton v22.5.2.15 products share the same engine so comments about Norton Security and Windows 10 Defender in that thread likely apply to N360 v22 as well.

Gayathri suggested I post that Defender now recognizes Norton Security if I look in control panel security.  The software is still somewhat unstable downloading routine updates & just a few minutes ago a Norton "patch" was automatically applied.  Yesterday, my Wacom graphics tablet & mouse pen drivers were knocked out again & had to be reinstalled.  Not sure if that was Norton Security, Windows 10 or some other reason.  Norton had 3 error reporting submissions in the history log the past several days. I count 19 error submissions since 9/1/15 if that helps.

Re: After upgrade to Windows 10 both NS and Windows Defender appear to be active

Hi Guys,

We talk about defender, but what about firewall...

My windows10 was installed clean, from scratch. I have Norton Security v22.5.2.15, latest.

Lets begin from control panel->Security and Maintenance-> Security.

Under Virus protection and malware, Both say Norton security Running, And right, Defender is turned OFF..

Under firewall, it says Norton security and there is a link below, view installed Firewalls. If you click on it, you got Norton ON, Windows Firewall OFF. Really? Lets check out..

Go to run-> write services.msc  or find services under Administration tools in all programs menu in start.

On services, go down to windows defender ( there are 2 entries) both NOT running, are on manual.

Down to windows Firewall.....RUNNING Automatically...

So what's the beef here? We all know its not good to run 2 firewalls...

Can Someone please explain? on other version of windows, and NIS, when Norton installs, firewall and defender are both disabled.

If someone knows why is that, please explain...I always use Norton, Always latest versions..

Down to windows Firewall.....RUNNING Automatically...

Windows Firewall "Service" listed as Running Automatic is as per design.
Windows Firewall is being managed by Norton.
Windows Firewall "Service" needs to be Running Automatic.

Summary.  Windows Defender Off, Windows Firewall Off, Windows Firewall "Service" Running Automatic.

Hi everyone. I have windows defender on as well as norton security, because I get daily updates not only for definitions, but updates for MS office, windows malicious scan tool, IE, and other updates, Windows.net etc. Norton switches it off after reinstalling again if you have to, but you can always turn it back on, I've not experienced any conflicts, or errors by downloading programs etc.

Do you have Windows 10?

It is never good idea to have two anti-viruses running together.  It does not double your protection but instead can leave your protection almost useless as both fight over a malware detection.

I'm running into a similar issue, just a new laptop with windows 10, and installed the latest norton internet security on it.

Now it windows update keeps trying to update the definitions of windows defender and fails.

I have tracked it down to Norton, with Norton removed and cleaned using the removal tool, windows update stops failing.

I reinstalled Norton, and windows is still trying to update the daily definition files.

Windows settings shows all of the windows defender options greyed out, but when I click the windows defender link at the bottom of the windows, it launches defender in a red status.

On my desktop when I try to launch defender it gives me a dialog box saying the windows defender has been turned off.

Is there a setting that got missed during the latest version of Norton?
