Annoying Norton Security Features

I've been using Norton (Internet) Security for many years. I like it's protections.  However, there are several extremely annoying "features" (a.k.a. glitches).

  1. When using Google Chrome, the Norton Security Toolbar overlaps the content of the web page that I'm one.  Usually not a big deal but for certain sites (Google Maps, for example), it is.
    1. Because it overlaps important web page controls, if you disable the toolbar without disabling the Identity Safe, the toolbar re-enables. :(
  2. When I log in to the website into My Devices, it shows the computers with generic names - "Chris-Windows 10-2", "Chris-Windows 7-4", etc...  The computer's "name" from System Properties is available because I see it listed on a different page but Norton doesn't use it here, on the page that is supposed to help me with my subscription!
  3. When using Internet Explorer, I like using the Toolbar and Identity safe.  I DO NOT want to use the other features - the Safe Search Extension and the Home Page Extension.  I WILL NOT use them.  If I TURN THEM OFF, you should not keep asking me if I want to install them.  If this requires adding an "Expert Mode" for users who want to disable those things, then ADD it!

There have been other issues that have peeved me about Norton Security.  These are the 3 that I can remember at the moment.  I'm busy.  I have work to do.  I can't stop and give user interface advice every time a product disrupts my work.  Please address these issues, Norton!

PS. When I tried to add a screen grab to my post, it said, "no .jpgs".  So I recreated the screen grab as a .png and the page removed my tags.  So I tried to edit the post and it said "Access Denied!!"

Re: Annoying Norton Security Features

Thanks. I hope I don't have to come here often enough to master this interface but I'll try to remember the "IMCE" button next time.

The blue line on the left is how much of the page that the toolbar conceals.

Um, can you try > chrome://flags/ < with Reset all to default & Relaunch Now.

I'm not a fan of Toolbars.

That's how chrome toolbars are. Extra fancy, overlap. Not just Norton.

Re: Annoying Norton Security Features

  1. If the toolbar is covering important items on a page, just click the little up arrow on the left of the toolbar. That  will hide the toolbar in that browser tab. If you want the toolbar back, click on the little black Norton icon at the right of the address bar.
  2. The names on the Devices page of your Norton Account are found on each device by opening your Norton Security and clicking on Help - About. The name Norton has give to that device should be on that information window. If you change the name on the Web site for a device, the new name will be reflected on each device's Help - About page.
  3. Not sure where you are getting bugged to add the features when you have turned them off. Sometimes if you reinstall your product, you will get windows reminding you that you may not have all features enabled. Just click into that notice and a web page will open. Just close that web page and you should not be bothered again.
Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

I'm aware of the up arrow and know it is designed to hide the toolbar but it's behavior isn't consistent.  Also, clicking the Norton icon doesn't consistently reveal the toolbar.  This wouldn't be necessary if, like in Internet Explorer, the toolbar didn't cover a page but rather it would occupy a toolbar row.  But thanks for that input.

Wow!  You're right!  I am seriously an interface snooper meaning that I dig around software a lot!  I don't think I would ever have looked there.  Wouldn't it be nice if Norton used the system's name instead of the computer generated name.  A big thanks for that info. I'll be able to use that to rename all of my systems on the Norton website.  [trying to get the "Norton name" to update it to the "Computer Name" on a few of my systems, the "Norton Name" comes up as "Unknown" - hopefully, a reboot will resolve those.]

I work on numerous systems each week.  On the systems where Norton is installed and the user has any opinion about which home page or which search engine they want to use as defaults, the message pops up fairly frequently.  If the feature isn't enabled, I'll see (on my own systems and others) a page from time to time prompting me to enable the missing features.  There really should be a "Don't enable the feature and don't ask me again" checkbox.

Thanks for the partial solutions.
