Backup Failed (W33)

What is error W33?  I wish this product gave more details as to what an error is and what causes it.  I was running my first full backup and everything seemed to be progressing fine and I let it run overnight and then this morning I see that the backup failed with error W33, and only 5% of my 102G of space is used (my backup size is 75G).

Re: Backup Failed (W33)

Hi Yngvai,

I also am not sure what the error message is all about but you can try backing up your files one folder at a time. Based on your backup size 75 GB is a lot of files, there are a lot of things to consider when there's an error message being received. It could have been that something went wrong while backing up one part of the files. Internet connection could also be a factor, any interruptions with the connection would result to interruption with the backup process.

So try backing up files maybe 1 GB at a time, you can calculate the files that will be backed up so that shouldn't be a problem.

Hope this would help.

Re: Backup Failed (W33)

I got the W33 error message again although the backup made it further this time (29% through).  But regardless, I paid money for this product and I'm getting a bit upset that this product is not what I thought it was.  It gives you almost no information on errors.  It's frustrating because I purchased 100 G of data space and I don't have the time to do backups 1 G at a time.  I need to let these run while I'm at work and overnight.

The log files are worthless because they don't give you any details as to what was backed up and where the errors occured.

There is no reason when I pay for a Norton product like this that I should have to resort to doing backups 1 gig at a time.  This is absurd in a day and age where people have large amounts of data now.  I went for this product because of the good reviews I saw by PC Mag and a few other review sites.  Wish I had seen this site first before I purchased it.

Re: Backup Failed (W33)

Here's what's even more ridiculous.  My backup space is showing 29% used, but Norton is telling me the backup failed and no files have been backed up.  So how can my backup space be 29% used?  I let this thing run for a few days and, after two W33 error messages, it's telling me my files weren't backed up?

I'm wishing now that I could get my money back.  This is absolutely ridiculous for a Norton product and does not deserve the Norton name.

Re: Backup Failed (W33)

Hello

The W33 is a Windows error. This particular error means: The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. Within the advanced log files it will contain the file details of what specific file is locked. If its causing the backup to abort I'd suspect its one of the encrypted archives its trying to upload.

We can setup a time or I can provide you with contact info to work with my team to find out what is causing the error and rectify it. If you prefer we call you send me a private message with the following:

  • Your name and the email address associated to your account
  • Your contact phone number
  • The best time to reach you
  • A link to this forum post as point of reference.

The space that's showing used is actually a partial backup. It's retaining the parts that were uploaded completely so subsequent backups will move faster. Likely the best thing to do is purge it once the issue is resolved and have it perform a clean session instead.
