additional info it also says that I have a trial version active.. nevermind im just kind of stupid sometimes... look I shouldn't have inputted the code in NIS, I should have done it at norton.com/setup. I reinputted the code there so all should be well.

Re: bought new NS... inputted code and DL'd it but NIS is not changing to NS

Just as a follow-up - NIS is one product, NS is a new product.  NS is not in the same product family as NIS, so you are correct, entering the NS product Key will not change NIS to NS.  Since you had the NS trial installed, entering the NS product key should have activated the trial and you should now have the full blown NS for a year.

You can now mark your second post as the solution so that if others do the same thing they will know! and learn from it!

Hi Nepunya,

You found a good price, but you also bought the complete product, with the cleaning-during-boot feature.

As far as I know, this disk version and the download are two different products, as the download do not provide boot cleaning. Moreover, Symantec does not seem to furnish upgrade means, only updates. Upgrade is sometimes supported by some products to bring the new version from the old one (for a reduced price) - updates are about the current supported product.

It is possible that the upgrade are unavailable for security suites, maybe because of security purposes, as the means to modify your security products are reduced.

The process is:

  1. Download the uninstaller; for Windows here: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us , or if you are on MacIntosh, here: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_EndUserProfile_en_us
  2. Execute the right uninstaller;
  3. Execute the new installer.

But I cannot guarantee if your key for disk version can confirm your downloaded version, maybe yes.

Bohr-Oppenheimer,

Here is the referenced sales page translated into English:

http://www.microsofttranslator.com/BV.aspx?ref=IE8Activity&a=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bol.com%2Fnl%2Fp%2Fnorton-security-2-0-2015-nederlands-1-gebruiker-5-apparaten-1-jaar-productcode-zonder-dvd%2F9200000033384345%2F

It clearly states without DVD, so it appears a be a download only to me.  The comments provided also indicate it is a download.  To the best iof my knowledge Norton does not provide a disk version of the new Norton Security Products.

Also lease tell us about this "cleaning during boot feature you are saying is included in this version.  I have never heard of this function and am interested in learning more.

I think I am correct in saying, at least in the USA, there are no disk versions of the new Norton Security Norton Security with Backup.

Even the boxed versions in stores or by mailorder do not contain a disk but do contain a card with the activation KEY and should contain instructions on how to download the installer.

The versions labeled in advertising as Download versions are as indicated ones that you download and you should receive the activation key as part of the transaction with the authorized supplier, in an email, order acknowledgement or invoice.

Way back there was introduced a Netbook version of Norton which came on a thumbdrive because netbooks did not have CD drives and although this version was later dropped the concept is the same -- with tablets, smartphones and small portable devices not having a CD drive they had to download.

The downside of CDs is that they are originally made on the first release and never updated and so if you reinstall some months or years later you have a lot of updating to do including removing and replacing bits of program engines that may not be functioning as they should or are not compatible with later versions of Windows (as happened for example with NIS on disk when Windows 8 was released).

You can always save a copy of the installer if you need a portable version to install in the field and I use thumbdrives for this.

While activation keys are not valid between versions, for example between Norton Security and Norton Security with Backup they are valid regardless of how you validly get your copy and also are backwards valid for a number of years .... although for the reason just stated not backwards between Norton Security and say Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 ...

Sorry to go on but I hope all that is correct and clear ....

Maybe talking about the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool that is now found here  https://security.symantec.com/nbrt/nbrt.aspx?lcid=1033

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Hello

Or Boot time protection. Bohr is also a MAC user. Perhaps this cleansing thing is in MAC's program.
