Buying 'European Union Edition' to use abroad?

Hello,

I noticed on PC World website in UK that NS is available for purchase. However, on closer inspection of the card display, at the bottom in a red banner it states 'EU Edition' "For distribution, resale and use only in the European Union".

Now, as I live in North Cyprus, which isn't EU, would this work for me? I have bought the old NIS in the past from the UK and never had a problem with it working, but this is something new to me this mention of EU only.

Also it states on the card display, 'No value till activated at till'? I know this subject has been covered in the past but still wonder whether your subs start to count down from the second you purchase at the till or not.

Symantec's sales strategy with this new product makes me think they don't want to part with their products any more, not available to most of the world then this. Still not on sale here in Cyprus either.

Hi brummie

Reported that activation at the till is for inventory control aka shoplifting deterrent.

Product subscription starts when you use aka activate the key.

global stuff is over my pay grade

Hi bjm_

Thanks for clearing the activation question.

Not something I've come across although it reminds me of Microsoft and having to leave IE out of Windows .....

I'd like to suggest that a restriction on where you use a product bought in the EU might be against EU regulations!

Re: Buying 'European Union Edition' to use abroad?

Hi Hugh,

I can't think how this would not work where I live to be honest. Also, why would the purchase and usage be any different from when I purchased NIS from UK and used it in my locale. In fact I 'm sure any other brand of security suite bought in England  would work fine here. Very strange.

brummie,

You know what it's like when the lawyers start "protecting" the organization !

They are surely not coming to knock on your door and the most they could do is not recognize the key code to activate it; but in your case the activation is automatic .... so .... ? So they can track your location ..... ?

OTOH Would you be having a box shipped from the UK with the download and key in it or what?

Hello Brummie

I remember seeing in the Forum that there are a couple of stores that activate the product when they sell it, so in that case the countdown would start when it is purchased. I've only heard of that though if you bought the product in person. Being that you are purchasing it online, I don't think that would apply in this case.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

As I recall that scenario was suspected but, confirmed to the contrary.   As I recall.  There were stores that controlled the license.  User had to renew via the store.  As I recall.

I may well be going to England in the near future and was looking at the option of buying from there as there is nothing to be had in this neck of the woods at the moment. I'm 90% sure the license key would work here, just wondering what others thought of this strange sales thing Symantec have thrown up.

A few years ago I wanted to buy an E-Reader, but found out you cannot buy downloads from here (Turkish locale) something to do with copyright laws, but I can still buy the physical books.

I'm just confused by this 'EU Edition' as I've never heard of this before.

I'll see if we can drum up any information once the weekend is over. I did try Google and it only produced your message! And searching Norton.com did not produce anything although it did show up EU in a number of filenames.

One important thing to be aware of if you have difficulty downloading the correct version where you are is that there are no versions of Norton Security with disks or other media! You can buy a box but it contains download instructions and a copy of the key, if it's a normal version ..... if it's from PCWorld maybe not even a key? Or there may be a key that you don't have to use for the first installation.

Re: Buying 'European Union Edition' to use abroad?

Good Morning Hugh,

I just had a look at the details on their site (PC World) and apparently it comes with a key, plus 'account registration required' which I take that as meaning a 'Norton Account' which I obviously have.

I also searched Google and looked at some of the Norton site but found nothing pertaining to this 'EU Version'.

Re: Buying 'European Union Edition' to use abroad?

FWIW, I installed NS over 3 months ago, I had bought a box CD license for 5 devices.
On the box is written:

EDITION FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION
Only for distribution, resale and use in the European Union
.

edit:

brummie, yes there is a product key and you need access to Norton Management to register the product, but this will work from Cyprus?

An answer from Symantec is welcome here!

Hi Sandro_cm,

Thanks for posting. I too noted it has a product key after I read the finer details.

In the past I've had no trouble say buying from Cyprus (Greek half Island) and using NIS, however, the reason I posted is because I live in northern half (Turkish Cyprus) and my locale on pc is shown as Turkey. Now, on the package I see at 'PC World' UK, at the bottom in a bold red band is the warning! The bit about 'use only in the European Union' pricked my ears up.

Hi brummie, that is why I do not recommend buying NS from them, at least proven guilty. I know you like Norton, try to wait again, things could change for the better.

I used to buy stuff from Dabs in Manchester. They seem to still be around but not much choice unless I'm searching wrong.

In Italy in the shops there are so many NS and NSwB I could think of buying them for resale... at least on the one where I always bought NIS first and now NS.
