Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

When I setup Skype my camera is disabled.  A friend suggested I disable Norton Firewall and test again.

My camera is okay in Skype when Norton Firewall is disabled.

Skype is TRUSTED in Norton Firewall

Skype Host is also TRUSTED in Norton Firewallj

How do I cause Norton Firewall to trust my camera?

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Hello

Please make sure that Skype and Skype Host are also allowed in the Firewall. Do the same thing with your camera.  Check the Network Trust also.

Thanks.

As I mentioned in the original question:

Skype Host is also TRUSTED in Norton Firewall

How do I make the camera TRUSTED in Norton Firewall?

Thanks

Does this look like an IPv6 address?

example address may be written as: 2001:db8:85a3:0:0:8a2e:370:7334

says that its location is 0000.001d.0000.001.003.000.000.000.000

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Okay, I've tried several different ways to make my new Webcam a network trusted device and my Norton Security software appears to be incapable of doing this.

1) The field for DEVICE NAME is too small for the full name of my Logitech HD Webcam C270

2) The field for PHYSICAL LOCATION does not recognize the location code I found in my device properties.

Worst of all, there appears to be no "look-up" built in to the Norton software for what is obviously a setup function that requires this.  The user should NOT be typing in these values.  Norton should present a list of devices and enable the user to select one.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

While these two comments may be technically accurate, they don't appear to apply to my issue.

I'm looking at the information available for my new webcam in the Windows 10 DEVICE MANAGER properties.

Windows 10 considers the following to be a LOCATION -- 0000.001d.0000.001.003.000.000.000.000

Norton Security does not recognize it to be an IPv6 address or a MAC address

I have not yet found a resolvable host name.

Anybody know which of the fields in the Windows 10 device properties that might be?.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

If the Norton Firewall appears to not allow the camera, try resetting the firewall.

To reset the Norton firewall, from the main Norton Security screen click on Settings - Firewall. On the General tab, click on Reset beside Firewall Reset. Then restart your computer. As you use programs that access your network/internet, the firewall rules will be created again.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Okay, the reset did not cause Norton Security to automatically recognize my webcam when I tried to use Skype after a reboot.

It appears to me that I need to manually insert the correct device properties name and/or address into the network trusted devices of Norton Security.

For that to work, I need to know where to find the correct device properties name and/or address in the Windows 10 Device Manager properties details list.

HINT: Would somebody from Norton please look at the Windows 10 Device Manager properties details and identify the correct DEVICE NAME and PHYSICAL LOCATION fields and SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS..

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Look in Windows Device Manager. You should be able to get details of the camera from there.

Sorry. I just saw your edit and see you have already done this.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Yes.

I hope I'm just hung up on a terminology issue.

Sadly, I suspect the information I need might not actually be in the Windows Device Manager.

The "Location" data under the General tab appears to be in a format that Norton Security does not recognize.

Or, it may be some other descriptor for location, not MAC and not IP.

Sigh.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Is this a built in web cam or a stand alone? If a stand alone, there could be a mac address on the label on the camera. The name for the Norton trust does not have to match anything. It is just a name that you will know what the device is.

It's an external, stand alone USB webcam: Logitech HD Webcam C270

I don't see any sticker on the product, no MAC or IP address.

CRKeizer Are you able to see several tabs as in the attached screenshot? These are from Windows 10. Change to the Details tab if it is showing and select Location Information. The info you need may be there.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Hello, Soul Asylum.

The "Location" field under the "Details" tab contains a number in the following format.

0000.001d.0000.001.003.000.000.000.000

I have no idea what this format is, and neither does my Norton Security, which declares it to be an invalid datum.

There are similar issues with every other field named "Location" or "Physical Address"

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

CRKeizer I have a C270 Logitech webcam on my Windows 10 Pro PC, checking my install it ALSO has a similar setting i0000.001d.0000.001.003.000.000.000.000 in WINDOWS. My Norton doesn't have any ADD DEVICE info put into that area and Norton isn't blocking it as it is NOT a network device but rather a LOCAL device. HOWEVER, I have never used the native W10 Skype app. Please try the following:

1. Uninstall the factory software for this device (if installed) AND remove it from your device manager in control panel. Then UNPLUG the USB cable. Reboot your machine.

2. After full reboot plug in the camera, Windows 10 should actively install the drivers for the camera. IF additional drivers are needed allow Windows Update to look for and install them. REBOOT when done whether prompted or not.

IF/WHEN you see Norton give you any popup screen regarding this device being blocked please post a screenshot of what you are seeing. Use the IMCE button above which appears as a small screen and follow prompts. I am concerned that Skype doesn't like your video drivers which also can cause your issue.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Hello, SoulAsylum.

I removed the Logitech Webcam software and the hardware.

When I rebooted and signed in to Windows 10, then plugged in my webcam, Windows 10 recognized the hardware immediately.

Then I tried Skype and still have no camera.

I'm beginning to think you are correct about the C270 -- it last had a driver update in October of 2012 so I have to wonder if it is just not compatible with Skype.

The odd thing is, it works perfectly fine in Windoes 10 with the Logitech software.

Time for me to go shopping for a 2017 webcam package.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

AHH then the issue has to lie within Skype itself. One of your settings isn't correct, my camera works perfectly. Have another look at those settings and your default app settings in Windows itself before giving up on this. Give a try updating your video drivers with the OEM (MANUFACTURER) set. Reboot then see what changes. PLEASE let us know what your results are. Have a great day today.

Re: Camera Disabled In Skype Caused By Norton Firewall

Well, resetting the video drivers with the OEM (MANUFACTURER) software and rebooting does not correct the issue.

My mother's laptop Skype sends video to my desktop computer's Skype, but my webcam does not send video to her.

All of this is inside the same house, using the same WiFi and wired LAN cable modem.

Annoying, to say the least.

I wish I knew more how to troubleshoot this problem, but it is rapidly exceeding the point where it is worth the time I'm putting into it.

Replacing the obsolete hardware and software with something designed for the world of Windows 10 seems like it would be less painful.

We gave it our best shot. Good luck with the new hardware when you have gotten it. Please let us know if your issue persists with a new camera. Others may benefit from knowing. Have a grand day.
