Can I Disable / Configure Identity Safe Maintenance Task?

I recently upgraded from NIS 20.x (2013) to  NIS 21.x (2014) and always have Identity Safe disabled (Settings | Web | Identity Safe | Identity Safe | Off).  Since upgrading I noticed that the background Identity Safe Maintenance task now runs outside of system idles for 5 minutes shortly after boot-up and temporarily freezes my computer.  With NIS 20.x, this task would only run for 1 sec and the status was always "Failed to Complete" as long as I had Identity Safe disabled.

With NIS 20.x (2013):

With NIS 21.x (2014):

I read Symantec employee Mohan_G's comment in Fraser's locked thread Identity Safe Maintenance that this change was made in Norton v. 21.3.0.12 "by-design", but does anyone know of a way to disable this maintenance task or at least configure it so it only runs during system idles?  I don't understand the value of having this task running outside of idle mode and consuming system resources when I don't use Identity Safe.

Re: Can I Disable / Configure Identity Safe Maintenance Task?

Hello Imacri

Did you try what Fraser suggested in this post?

I checked mine just now. Running NS and it takes .01 seconds again. Don't recall how long on the older version.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Re: Can I Disable / Configure Identity Safe Maintenance Task?

Hi Imarci,

I still have Comcast NSS v 21.6.0.32 installed on a win 7 64 bit desktop.  I also have my ID Safe enabled, and my ID Safe Maint takes 1 second.  floplot's link includes some info from the same system that I posted in that thread.

I know that you have run LiveUpdate as normal is required as the change I believe was made sometime during the v 21 inline progression.

From my understanding, since the maintenance tasks are grayed out, we as users have no control over them.  I recall Norton said they were only there to keep the user informed of some of the maintenance Norton does behind the scenes.

Something I also spotted and never noticed before, the grayed out ID Safe Maint  runs on both battery and mains.  Also my ID Safe Maint does not run at boot time - but ran about a hour and 1/2 after boot up.

I know not the answer you wanted, but I see no way for us users changing anything in regards to that task.

Just curious, does the ID Safe Maint revert to one second if you leave ID Safe Enabled?

Re: Can I Disable / Configure Identity Safe Maintenance Task?

Lmacri,

When you boot your system, the task shows 5 minutes with NIS v.21 & NS v.22 , however, if you look a few minutes later, something between 5-15 minutes, you will see it having a status of complete and duration of 1 second. It had always been like that, and no, you cannot disable that task.

I also have always disabled Identity Safe in Norton GUI, do not worry about this... this task will always run as it maintains Identity Safe log-ins even if you never use Identity Safe.

Hi floplot:

Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried Fraser's suggestion here and it makes no difference - the Identity Safe Maintenance task still runs for 5 min shortly after boot-up regardless of whether I'm logged in or logged out of my Norton Account from the main NIS GUI.  I have never seen any indication that this task runs again between boot-ups (or completes within 1 sec), which is different from what Apostolos described here.

I've only had NIS v. 21.x (2014) on my system for 3 weeks (it was a clean install), but my impression is that background v. 21.x Norton tasks are more prone to running outside of system idles if a scheduled task is skipped/interrupted when my system comes out of idle.  I'll fiddle around with my Idle Time Out settings but if that doesn't decrease the amount of CPU and other system resources consumed by background tasks outside of idles I might just downgrade back to NIS v. 20.x (2013) - my older 32-bit Vista machine didn't suffer the same system freezes with NIS v. 20.x that I'm seeing with NIS v. 21.x.

I'm still not sure why Symantec requires this maintenance task to be run in the first place since my Identity Safe password manager is disabled, but I don't expect other users in the forum will have the answer to that question.  I just hope it's not a case of poor programming.

Re: Can I Disable / Configure Identity Safe Maintenance Task?

lmacri,

This task will run regardless if your pc is idle or not, when system boots it shows 5 mins, and if you check, during the same Windows session, it will show 1-2 secs in regular intervals, it's by design, however I agree that if  Identity Safe is disabled it should not run.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Hi yank:

No, leaving Identity Safe enabled didn't help either.  I've never set up a vault (my Norton Toolbar indicates that my vault is closed when Identity Safe is enabled), so it's always possible that some combination of vault login/logout and Norton Account login/logout might reduce the Identity Safe Maintenance task down to 1 sec, but I'm not keen on creating an online vault when I have no intention of using Identity Safe.

Re: Can I Disable / Configure Identity Safe Maintenance Task?

Hi,

Again, the duration/execution of that task is not configurable, I suggest you go back to NIS 20 or upgrade to NS/NSwBU, the background tasks work much better and NS is very light compared to NIS 14, especially during LiveUpdate... best of luck.
