Can't access Internet... firewall problem?

Hi,

I have a PC and a laptop networked through a homegroup. Both show Internet access, but I am only able to access the Internet through the laptop. I have done much troubleshooting trying to figure out what is going on with the PC (which is my kids' computer, and they probably downloaded something they shouldn't have).

I've tried Firefox, Chrome, and IE. Right now I'm getting odd, limited access through Chrome... allowing me to do Google searches, for example, but then I click on anything from the search and it doesn't load the page. It will not go to most pages at all... just Google seems to be working. FF is giving me nothing, but seems to allow me to search Norton help pages.

I've done many things to troubleshoot including resetting the router, leaving and rejoining the homegroup, running various diagnostics, I did a system restore, etc.

Is this a firewall problem? When I go to NSS settings, Smartfirewall is checked but grayed out and I cannot change any settings. This is NSS through Comcast/Xfinity.

Thanks for your help.

Have you restarted the PC?

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

wookyluvr,

Have you tried setting up your home network as a workgroup instead of a homegroup?

It's been a few years since I set up my home network, but I recall first setting up a homegroup and I had trouble sharing between computers. So I deleted my homegroup and used a workgroup.

Here's a link explaining the differences between a domain, workgroup, and homegroup.

Yes, of course, restarted the computer many times.

Also, this was a set up that worked for several years... only just started having the problem a week or 2 ago according to the kids.

geek47, the homegroup set up worked for like 3 years so I'm not eager to mess with that and switch to a workgroup unless that is the only fix.

I hear ya .... and totally agree.

What changed recently on your computers?

You mentioned NSS in your original post ... sorry, but I am not familiar with that. When I searched on NSS, I found Norton Security Scan. The description of NSS says this:

Norton Security Scan is a software tool designed to help you understand if your computer is currently protected from known threats. Norton Security Scan performs a scan of your computer and displays if there are existing viruses, worms, spyware, unwanted adware, or Trojans residing on your computer. Norton Security Scan is used to check how protected your computer is currently.

Is that the product you are using? If so, what antivirus product are you using? Did it change recently?

EDIT: Thanks to post (see below) from bjm, I now understand that the AV product you are using is from Comcast, is called NSS, and is the equivalent of N360. Did Comcast make any changes to NSS recently (check your logs)?

I am currently using NIS. On occasion when I have suspected that a rule in the NIS firewall might have been causing some problem on my PC, I TEMPORARILY disabled the NIS firewall and then tried to recreate my problem. If the problem persisted (with firewall disabled), then I could eliminate the NIS firewall as a cause, and I immediately re-enabled the firewall.

You may want to try that technique to see if your firewall is causing the problem. Of course there is always a risk in accessing the internet with firewall disabled.

Re: Can't access Internet... firewall problem?

NSS from Comcast is Norton Security Suite = N360 Comcast brand

Hi, I seem to have resolved this (after many hours!). I uninstalled and reinstalled NSS. That seemed to be part of it, but did not resolve the whole issue. I took many more steps (too many to recount here!). Anyway, the browsers are loading pages now. Thanks for your messages.
