can't remove a computer and/or purge backup file set

[Windows 7, serv pack 1, 64 bit, PC, IE9 v. 9.0.8112.16421, Norton 360 v. 20.2.0.19]

Backup says I'm using twice as much online backup space as my backups can account for.  Backup says I have two computers with backups online, which would account for the double data dose.  (One of the computers and attached backup is probably an artifact left behind after two episodes of uninstall/reinstall carried out by chat technicians.)  As I understand it, if I remove one of the computers (the one with an older backup set), the extra backup files will go away along with that computer.  Thing is, the "Home Page" for Norton Online Backup is supposed to provide a "Remove a Computer" option.  It doesn't.  An option might be to Purge the older file set, but the Purge option is missing when I select "File Options" for either of the computers; options offered are "Download a File" and "E-mail file links."

Any recommendations gratefully accepted.

Re: can't remove a computer and/or purge backup file set

Hello standfordb

Are you using Norton Online Backup exclusively or also Norton 360? If you're using Norton 360 you can't use the NOBU web interface to purge computers. Please elaborate and I can then guide you accordingly.

Re: can't remove a computer and/or purge backup file set

Hi Wesley.

Thanks for your note.  I didn't realize NOBU was a standalone.  My backups have been done in the 360 space, launching from the yellow backup square on the main 360 page.  I accessed info about the backups via my Norton Account, which lists my Norton Online Storage (5 GB, which doesn't include the 2 GB I received when I bought 360) and offers "Access your online backup files," which takes me to a NOBU sign in page.  This takes me to "My Devices" page, which shows the two computers:  :Stan-PC" and "Stan-PC: DefaultSet."  I believe the second entry is the backup done after the second uninstall/reinstall done by a chat tech.  My first backup, done when I first installed Norton, had a different name, something like "Stan's main files."  The tech told me to do a backup after the reinstall, with no indication that I wouldn't automatically be backing up to my original file set.  I did the backup via the 360 menus.

I have a current backup of my main files to a USB, which should duplicate the "DefaultSet" online.  Just in case.

Thanks for your help.

Re: can't remove a computer and/or purge backup file set

Hi StanfordB

The web interface for Norton 360 only permits access to restore files. All data management such as purging files and backing up are always managed via the locally installed Norton 360 client. The one that have been running the backups.

If you go to My Computer you'll see a Norton Drive addition. Open that up and you can purge the other data set as needed. Just keep in mind it can take some time to process so don't close out of that window. If you're not seeing it let me know and we can take alternative action.

Thank you, Wesley.  This seems to solve my problem.  I greatly appreciate your prompt help.
