Re: Computer keeps locking up

What do you mean by "locks up?"  The Norton history entries you see are just Norton acknowledging that the loopback network and network adapter have reconnected and are being monitored by Norton.  That is normal whenever the computer restarts or reconnects online.  They would not be the cause of whatever the problem might be.

Re: Computer keeps locking up

All applications stop responding, i cant do anything, i have to restart my computer. If it locks up/ stops responding, the messages i get in norton happen as the exact same time, im not getting these messages by restarting my computer, if i restart my computer under normal conditions those messages wont be there when i boot up. Most of the time i get a message saying something like "Ip address lost" when this happens, but i didnt get the last time my computer locked up. im just trying figure out what is causing all programs to stop responding, whether its hardware related or my isp, and ive had 3 different modems since its been happening so i can probably rule that out. I can only think of 3 reasons this is happening, isp, network card or Hard Drive is failing.

If it is the ISP or network card, you would still be able to open other programs that aren't dependent on the network or internet.  Every time you get a new connection Norton will make an entry in the Firewall log.  Those Norton entries are after the fact, and won't give you any clue as to why the connection was lost in the first place.

Hello Scott

You might be locking up due to a heat issue. Have you cleaned out the insides of your computer around the fans, vents, etc. lately ?

Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.18.0.213 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Re: Computer keeps locking up

I keep a check on the temperature alot, my cpu is always around 95 - 100 F, I keep my fans and case clean.  Ive had computers lock that lock up in the past due to overheating, when that happens, i cant do anything, mouse or nothing responds. With the current issue i can still move my mouse around and my taskbar will popup and thats about it, when it locks up my harddrive light stays on, as if its running nonstop, which makes me think it could be my hard drive, but this problem only happens once a week, twice occasionally, but im not getting the usually symptoms of a failing HD(not on my c: drive), i do have a second Drive that is a about to go, but its my D: drive, that i never use, its only for storage, nothing running programs on it, im gonna disconnect it, and see if the problem stops.

Thx for the help everyone.

Re: Computer keeps locking up

What programs are running when you see these lockups? Have you checked to see if one of them was updated around the time you started seeing this?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

It can be any program running or have nothing running at all, i cant even open task manager to check my process's, memory, cpu, networking, or hard drive when it happens, its been going on so long i dont know what i might have installed. Still hasnt locked up since i made the first post here, wont be long:) Just waiting for it to happen again before i try any more trouble shooting.

Not sure if it's the same problem, but my computer responds very slowly at times.  I've checked in Task Manager (I'm running Win 8.1) and it's generally Norton Security with Backup taking 100% of the disk resources.  This happens for HOURS.  I've tried not using my computer, not having any programs running to allow whatever Norton is doing to complete, but since this happens several times a week it's just not practical.  The only work around I've found is to put Norton into silent mode while I do whatever it is I need my computer for, but it's annoying to have to do that several times a day.  What is causing Norton to be such a resources hog?  Shouldn't it recognize when I'm using my computer (surfing internet, word processing or what have you)?

As I type this my disk resources are at 100%.

I saw another post that mentioned there might be a problem with my harddrive so a chkdsk should be run, but I did that and the problem did not resolve at all.  It took over 5 hours to complete the chkdsk!
