Computer in NOB went offline, unable to reinstall properly

Went from backup failure, then offline. Reinstalled NOB client and it automatically created a second computer with the same name as original (offline). The "new" added computer appears online, the scan for files initializes but is unresponsive. When I attempt to add files or folders manually: "you can only add files and folders when you are on that computer" (but I am on that computer :(

Also, right click on the System Tray icon no longer opens "Home, Backup Now, Restore..." menu - right-clicks only opens new browser windows, then (unsuccessfully) attempts to scan the "new" computer.

I then attempted the following actions:

- Uninstalled / reinstalled the latest NOB client - same result

- Renamed the original (offline) computer then uninstalled / reinstalled the latest NOB client - same result.

- Removed the original (offline) and new (online) computers, then uninstalled / reinstalled the latest NOB client, added the new computer again - same result.

- Removed the new (online) computer, then uninstalled / reinstalled the latest NOB client, added the new computer again - same result.

- Removed the new (online) computer, Renamed (hostname) the computer added the new computer again.

then uninstalled / reinstalled the latest NOB client - same result.

- Removed the new, renamed (online) computer,  then uninstalled / reinstalled the latest NOB client, emailed myself an invitation/ registration code, registered manually, added the new computer again - same result.

NOB (standalone, not with 360), Windows (XP SP3), SEP 11 Small Business Ed.

Oh and by the way: you're reCAPTCHA  DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY EITHER. and no I am not visually or alcoholically impared!

Re: Computer in NOB went offline, unable to reinstall properly

Hello hdrew,

Norton Online Backup does not support reinstalling in the typical sense. What it did was the correct action. Once it installs a new end point/Computer you can then re-select files for backup. You would need to go to the old computer, File Actions and select to restore any data you need. Under the first section of the restore gives you the ability to direct which Computer the restore will go to. In your case that'd be the newly created Computer.

To make it easier I'd suggest going into Settings and changing the name of the old Computer to something distinctive. That'll make it much easier to tell the two apart from each other.

If the client is not connecting, by giving you the menu choices, there is something blocking the install partially. Send me the following and I'll have a member of my team reach out to you to sort this out. I'd normally suggest Tier 1 but based on your list of issues this would end up getting escalated anyway. We'll skip the middle man.

  • Your Norton/NOBU email address.
  • Contact name and phone number.
  • A time (including time zone please) of when you'll be at the computer you're trying to do all of this.

Keep in mind it may not be till after the New Year holiday depending on when I get your reply. If you absolutely wish to give Tier 1 a shot you can reach them by going to http://www.norton.com/chat.
