Computer performance improvements are needed.

I have a norton security performance message:  Attention. Computer performance improvements are needed.  There is no explanation, only an option to "Fix Now."  I do not want to let someone else determine how my PC is configured.  Tell me what the program is suggesting, not a vague message.  Nixon said, "trust me."  Norton said, "Fix Now."

hi Tgar

As you likely know Norton includes Disc Optimiser and File Cleanup if these settings are turned on and not run for a time Norton will remind you to run them.

If you do not wish to use this feature you can turn them off.

The Disc Optimiser is the feature that many users feel should not be used as especially if you have a SSD it will try to optimise it when they don't want it to.

Hello @tgar

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Please tell us what Norton product you are running.

Please also tell us the version (Help/Support>About)

Please inform us about the Operating System and Service Pack(if applicable)

Is there a ? at the end of that comment?

That would give you the Help information.

Please come back and give us some information. Thanks.

Re: Computer performance improvements are needed.

Thanks for your reply.

The product is Norton Security 22.5.2.15 on a Windows 7 PC SP-1.

Both optimizer and file cleanup are turned on.  These appear to be defragging and cleaning-up temporary files.  Not a problem for my HDD.

The Norton message only says, something is wrong.  It does not hint at what it is.  Nor does it say what it will do to fix it.  I want a little more information than that.  It's like a mechanic saying something is wrong with your car...Fix Now.

There was no question mark at the end of my comment.  If I was going to ask a few questions, they would include:  What's wrong?  What does the program plan to do about it?  Why display such vague messages?

Hello

Have you looked in  the Norton Security Manual which can be found when you click on help on the main page. Thanks.

EDIT: Please see page 12 In Norton Security Manual.

Re: Computer performance improvements are needed.

I agree with the original poster.  Clicking on Fix Now, without having a clue about what it is going to do to your computer is not a good thing.  Regarding floplot's post about the manual page 12 (thanks for the tip) but I read it but it and it does not address the actual pushing of the fix now button and I think I'll just leave it alone for a while until I figure out the "fix now" thing and what it will actually do.  I also clicked on the support button and it said nothing was wrong.

IMO ~ "Fix Now" should only be for 'critical' security matters.
Performance is not critical nor security.

Follow-up:  Today, without having done anything, Norton now has a green check mark, vice a yellow mark yesterday, and the fix now button is gone.  I guess this makes even a stronger case for not pushing "fix now" for computer performance.

Re: Computer performance improvements are needed.

I just had the same message (in NIS 22.5.2.15, win7 sp1). I first tried running a "Diagnostic Report" (via Security, Run Scans), but it gave nothing useful.

I then decided to risk the "Fix Now" option. It performed the following:

  • Internet Explorer Temporary Files (cleaned up)
  • Disk Optimization - though details at end showed this for each partition - "Optimization not required - current disk fragmentation is 0%"
