Disable schedule for full system scan and disable quick scans

I have a problem with Norton Security. My system drive (C:) is 150 GB. I have 2 Data partitions (1.2 TB each).

I never want to do a full system scan. I set the Configure for Full System Scan to "Do not schedule". But this setting becomes unset by Norton eventually and begins a full system scan. I have to go back into Norton, set "Do not schedule" again, and reboot the PC. I want this setting to stick and never do a full system scan. Is there a way to do this?

Is there a way to disable Quick Scans? As I understand it, every time Norton does an Automatic Live Update, it does a Quick Scan. I don't want this to run automatically. I would like Norton to inform me of a Live Update, and then inform me it wants to do a Quick scan, which then I could either not accept, or schedule a Quick Scan. My C: drive is 150 GB and a Quick Scan uses my hard disk too much.

In general, with Norton Security with these 2 processes using considerable resources, I am ready to ditch Norton Security and go with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. Any replies welcome.

Edit: can I just add my exclusions for scans, and then let the Full System Scan and Quick Scans run in the background? Is this a solution?

Re: Disable schedule for full system scan and disable quick scans

Regarding Full Scan scheduling, after selecting "Do not schedule," click "next" to advance to "3. Scan Options."  There, you will find the "Save" button that makes your scan configuration permanent.  That being said, it is possible that some product updates can revert this to the default, so it is just a matter of checking after version updates to make sure your selection was not undone.  I always recommend rechecking all of your settings following any major product update anyway.

Quick Scans are considered priority items.  You cannot block them from running, but if you set your Idle Time Out option to 1 minute, these scans will generally run almost as soon as the PC is idle and do not take long to complete.  In most cases, they will finish before you resume using the computer.

You can also disable Full System Scans by opening Norton and clicking on Scans > Custom Scan > Go > remove the "X" from Full System Scan.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Disable schedule for full system scan and disable quick scans

I went and set my exclusions and the Full System scan completed no problems. I manually did a quick scan and it did no take take long. So I'm happy now. I've been using Norton since 2004 so I was always happy with it. But the constant Norton disk activity was making me less productive as a software developer. Although the CPU usage was low, the disk activity slowed things down considerably. I think it's ok now. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

As far as setting the timeout low for Quick Scans, I think that there is some latency with Norton to de-prioritize it's current Quick Scan when you resume using your PC. So If I start using it and a Quick Scan is currently running it takes Norton a little while while to stop running. So this is an annoyance. So I set the the idle timeout to 15 minutes during my productive times. So I can resume using my PC during productivity times. Then later on when I'm done with my PC for a while the Quick Scan can run.

te7,

Just another thought - you may be able to use Quiet Mode with User specified programs selected to accomplish your desires.

Re: Disable schedule for full system scan and disable quick scans

Hello

Idle Quick Scans only run when SDS Definitions are downloaded. That happens 2 or 3 times a day and that is in a 24 hour period. The Quick Scans do not run after every Auto Live Update.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.
