.EWS Files in My Documents Folder

In Explorer, my "My Documents" folder suddenly has hundreds of files with the .ews extension, and many other files with extensions like .DS_Store, .py and .pyd.  I'm guessing these may be just normal files that are usually hidden?  Or do they indicate a malware attack of some kind?  Norton Security says I'm healthy.

Thank you! -- CL

Re: .EWS Files in My Documents Folder

Hello

Do you have a Mac in your network?  DS_Store has to do with a Mac. I couldn't find anything about py or  pyd endings.

I would recommend that you visit one of the free Malware Removal sites. They are the ones who could tell you if your computer is clean or infected.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users who unfortunately has passed away. That site is still being run by a good expert who happens to be one of the other Gurus.  The new site is listed first in this link.

Please come back and let us know how you made out.

Thanks.

Re: .EWS Files in My Documents Folder

Thanks Floplot,

I found out the .EWS files are audio samples from the EastWest Symphonic sound library, a MIDI sound library I use.  I was not familiar with the extension because when using MIDI the extensions are generally invisible to the user.  Same when I checked some of the other weird extensions, they are all related to MIDI or audio programs I use.  There are many thousands of these sound files, so it looked strange, but it is correct.  And not evidence of malware (sigh of relief).

However when I open the “My Documents” folder, I’m seeing every file in every sub-folder all displayed in the "My Documents" folder.  But if I open the “Documents” folder, it opens normally with all my sub-folders and every file where they’re supposed to be.  It’s only in the "My Documents” folder that I see the contents of every sub-folder displayed.  And if I look at the file paths of the files, they are all shown as stored in their correct sub-folders.

Other than this issue with the "My Documents" folder, the computer runs fine.  I restored this computer with Ghost a few weeks ago, perhaps it’s related to this.  Or perhaps I inadvertently flipped some option somewhere on that “My Documents” folder to cause it to display the contents of all its sub-folders.  If anyone has a simple answer to that?  Otherwise I'm inclined just to ignore the problem.

Thanks again for your kind help.

Re: .EWS Files in My Documents Folder

And the solution... Switching the "Arrange By" setting from "Date" to "Folder" cured this problem in the affected folder.  Apparently this is a bug in Windows Explorer, according to forums where I found this solution...  Sorry for the bother.
