Expected Tool Bar Update for Firefox 40 Not Happening

Updates done this evening to Norton 360 version 21.7.0.11, and later opened Firefox 40.0.2, and for a brief time, a tab opened informing me of a toolbar update being ready or available.  So I clicked on the button in the tab.     Then nothing... no activity related to it, just Firefox still open, no updating activity seen, and now there is no toolbar shown in Firefox window, and the older norton plugins or extensions in firefox are both disabled.    I want the NEW norton toolbar updated and working in my Firefox browser.  WHAT HAPPENED?  WHAT CAN I DO?

(Windows Vista, Toshiba laptop)

NEW:  I ran LiveUpdate for Norton 360 again, and this gave a [!] Norton Browser toolbar Add-on; this update requires a restart of your PC.

So I did.

and then I opened Firefox to check what could be found.  Norton toolbar found still disabled.  I re-enabled this add-on and restarted Firefox.  Now, the tool bar appears to be working, but I have not much tested to see how well.   The version shown for this toolbar is 2014.7.12.35

Not yet sure what to make of this.

Re: Expected Tool Bar Update for Firefox 40 Not Happening

g-café_c,

Just curious if you rebooted after the initial bout of updates that started your original post, before opening FF?  I have found my old Vista laptop enjoys reboot after numerous LiveUpdates.

Also, it sounds like you permitted FF to update to FF 40 prior to N360 receiving the Norton browser Toolbar add-on for FF 40. Many times in the past it has been suggested to ensure the Norton browser toolbar add-on, had been updated prior to updated to the new FF version.  FF being updated prior could have in part caused your weird experience.

I usually suggest open FF, go to Tools > Options > Advanced Tab and select Check for updates but let me decide whether to install them.  This way the update for FF can be delayed until after you receive the Norton Browser Toolbar add-on update.

Also I just noticed the "Warn me if this will disable any of my add-ons."  under the automatic install option.  As I am not a full-time FF user, that appears to be a new option.

Re: Expected Tool Bar Update for Firefox 40 Not Happening

yank,

the problem described which I had was SUDDEN; literally a few minutes after finding the problem happening.

I have restarted after the later LiveUpdate.  I lost track of a few other updating and associated actions, but the first problem I described was sudden, and I believe, I had not yet restarted the computer -- but now it has been.

I will check more carefully later on this.

Still, what is with the enablement & disablement for this toolbar, and do I have the latest version?

yank,

Good suggestion about checking the Options for Firefox.  Another piece of detail that I want to recheck.  In any case, I always have FFx set to LET ME decide about upate, and not to check for update on its own.

Re: Expected Tool Bar Update for Firefox 40 Not Happening

Norton 360 now been liveupdated twice and computer been restarted and fresh started since last report, and this is what is found:

Firefox version 40.0.2 does not show an update option for "Warn me if this will disable add-ons".  That option is only available if I choose "Automatically Install Up-dates", which I do not want; I choose for Firefox to Never Check for Updates.  The toolbar version shown for Norton Toolbar is 2014.7.12.35 and is currently enabled and working.  This must be a problem with how Firefox is designed.  I really want to NEVER check for updates but to do so when I am ready; not when Firefox wants to.  I Also want the option that firefox will not allow in this setting;  I want it to warn me about disablement of add-ons but this option is not connected to "never check for updates".

Re: Expected Tool Bar Update for Firefox 40 Not Happening

I believe you may not be understanding what I was getting at.  In the past, updates were automatically download regardless of if they broke add-ons.  Even with the option to notify you ON they will still be installed and break your add-ons - but if you select the notify box, you will be notified.  Sort of crazy, your add-on will still be disabled, but  you'll know it.

Perhaps that was added if a 3rd party add-on which hasn't been verified by Mozilla is auto-installed?  I guess FF has to be aware of what was downloaded in order to decide if it will disable an add-on, thus it would not work with Never check for updates.
