Firefox extremelyl slow to open

I recently installed the 30 trial version of Deluxe.  This occurred on the same day I received the Anniversary update of Windows 10.  Previously I was using a copy of Symatec given to me by my company and was free to use as long as I worked there.  It no longer worked with Windows 10 so I selected this product to try.

I'm using Firefox 49.0.1 and the most recent version of Norton

Ever since installing, it takes at least 30 seconds and probably closer to a minute to open Firefox, which is set to open Yahoo has a home page.  I did a search and found that it was recommended to stop the scan on open for firefox files.  I excluded the entire folder from scans.

It's still happening.  I'm almost at the point of getting some other product.

It also seems like my computer is running a bit slower, and I can't open some of the icons from my task bar - I have to go to the program list.  For example, I can't even open Norton from there.

Any ideas to help?  I'm about to go back to Zone Alarm, which I used until my company gave me a copy of Symantec.

Re: Firefox extremelyl slow to open

Have you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available?

Have you disabled the Windows Fast Startup feature. It can cause issues with software updates. If you disabled it before the Anniversary Update, Microsoft felt they needed to turn the feature back on with the update.

Which Norton product did you have before the AU? Which product did you now choose.?

Re: Firefox extremelyl slow to open

Thanks.  Yes, I ran live update and there was nothing to update.  I also ran a scan.

I never disabled Windows Fast Startup, but I did the Win 10 update and Norton install on the same day - so it could be effecting it.

I'm currently using the free trial of Norton AV deluxe.  I previously was using a corporate version of Symantec which no longer worked after I upgraded Win10, and I couldn't get a compatible version.  Before that I used Zone Alarm.

The problems started with the Win 10 update and installation of Norton AV deluxe.  I just can't tell which is causing it.  I also double checked Firefox and it's on the current version as well.  It updated around the same time.

Did you remove the Symantec product and Zone Alarm?

Did you install Norton before or after getting the Windows AU?

Re: Firefox extremelyl slow to open

Yes and Yes.  I disabled Windows Fast Startup and that seemed to help a bit.

I installed Norton after I couldn't get Symantec to work.

My whole computer seems to be sluggish now - and it's only 6 months old with a fairly fast processor.

Re: Firefox extremelyl slow to open

Try removing Symantec using the removal tool from here. If you did not use the removal tool, there can still be leftovers that can interfere with your Norton product. Restart your computer.

Next get the Clean utility for Zone Alarm from here. This will ensure a complete removal of Zone Alarm. Again, restart the computer.

Then you should get a clean install of your Norton by running the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from   www.norton.com/nrnr   Be sure you read the before you begin section, and run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Hi, Mary. Sometimes a fresh install of Firefox will help. You can also run speedyfox, which can help with slow Firefox launching.

Re: Firefox extremelyl slow to open

Sounds to me like you did not uninstall Symantec Enterprise before installing Norton Security. Have you tried another browser? Does Edge have the same problem? Download Google Chrome and see if the issue is there. Try IE. Maybe it is just a Firefox issue.

@MaryT:

I previously was using a corporate version of Symantec which no longer worked after I upgraded Win10, and I couldn't get a compatible version.  Before that I used Zone Alarm.

1st: Compatibility Issue

Seems that you're not alone:

I (Someone) have [had] Windows 7 Home Premium and got the upgrade offer to Windows 10... (Then Windows 10) gives [gave] an error message saying that Symantec Endpoint Portection [Protection] needs  to be uninstalled. I (The user) uninstalled SEP (using the traditional method) and tried to continue bu [but] I (the user) keep [kept] getting the same message (as shown below).

Then, were you using the said Symantec Endpoint Protection as well? If so, follow peterweb' comment to uninstall earlier versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection and/or Norton Security Deluxe THOROUGHLY.

Furthermore, please learn how to choose the right product that works for you:

To fully uninstall the said SEP, you cannot afford to miss Cleanwipe tool@ Flexnetoperations.com

For more info, please review:

and pay a visit to Symantec Security Forums@ http://www.symantec.com/connect/security/forums

2nd: Browser settings & PUAs

Ever since installing (Norton Security Deluxe, right?), it... set (to open) Yahoo (Yahoo!) (has) [as] a home page.

NO is my answer. Only because:

Norton has teamed up with Ask.com to provide you with a safer search experience (at the time of replying)!

See more info@ this Norton Safe Search page.

Even though, it's an optional setting and different with the traditional Ask Toolbar/ Search App by Ask (and/or other endless variants by the new IAC company).

Then you can (had better) learn how to customize the installation of Norton product and/or other security program & popular apps/downloads like Intel Security solutions (PKA, McAfee), Microsoft's Skype for Windows and more.

Going back to what you said earlier, the express install of ZoneAlarm changed (would change) the homepage settings in your Firefox (again), personally:

I'm about to go back to Zone Alarm (ZoneAlarm)..

Please check the Add-on Manger in your FF, rid of this ZoneAlarm Blur Anti-tracking browser extension if you too find it there. And please do not miss out on the programs list under Control Panel:

As for Firefox slowness issue, you can also read the following official troubleshooting tips:

If you choose to perform a clean install of Firefox, export your bookmarks first and get the full, official setup pkg here.

Please keep in mind that, sometimes, less is just more - learn to say NO to potentially unused add-ons and/or any other possibly unwelcome PUPs.

Thanks and good luck! :)

Re: Firefox extremelyl slow to open

Thank so much to all of you.  After working through the initial suggestions, the problems seems to have gone away.  Firefox opened normally.  However, I was not aware that other anti virus programs remain after uninstallation, so I will also follow the rest of the instructions.

And apologies for my lateness in responding - I generally don't use my home computer during the week.

SpeedyFox compacts those databases without loosing any data. Databases are optimized to operate faster and are decreased in size:
