Forgotten settings password

It seems that I've forgotten my password, to make changes in the Administrative settings section.  I've tried my various passwords, but nothing seems to be working.  Is there a way to reset this password, or do I have to uninstall and reinstall the program?

Re: Forgotten settings password

Thank you for the quick instructions, but I could not follow the guide completely. After clicking on step 3, I clicked on uninstall/change and then Norton uninstalled itself.  Now I need to install Norton's again.  Would you know the website I can download the latest version from?  On a lighter note, that Norton Uninstall screen was new...  Someone hiking across the mountain range.  Nice picture.

Thank you for the quick instructions, but I could not follow the guide completely. After clicking on step 3, I clicked on uninstall/change and then Norton uninstalled itself.  There was no option at the bottom to RESET settings password.  I had to find and reinstall the Norton program.  Reinstalling did erase the Administrative settings and I was able to create a new password.  On a lighter note, that Norton Uninstall screen was new...  Someone hiking across the mountain range.  Nice picture.

When you try the information in the guide in SoulAsylum's link, please let us know if you find the option to reset your settings password. The last few users I tried to help with this did not find the option. I too tried to find it and it did not work for me. I escalated this issue a couple of times but have heard nothing about it.When

Re: Forgotten settings password

peterweb, I tried using SoulAsylum's suggestion, but I didn't see any option to reset settings password.  I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling NIS, no big deal at least I have the latest updates.  Now on a second PC, it will not accept my settings password either?  I have the password written down, so I'm pretty sure it is correct.  Oh well, something else to do on a rainy day.

Re: Forgotten settings password

peterweb, just another question..  Is that settings password kept locally or somewhere else?  I ask because I set a password on those settings, so no one could make changes.  Now on at least two PC's, the program will not accept my password and some settings have been changed.  Could some of the numerous updates and patches lately, bypass my password and and allow Norton's to send ads again?  Again just asking.

Good to know that a reinstall will fix this.

I think that the Settings password is stored locally somehow. Maybe in the registry??? Probably encrypted.

Not sure when the option to reset was removed from the uninstall routine, but I'm fairly sure it was over a year ago that I tried to help another user with this.

We have seen in the past where updates to NS have reset settings. I do not think that having a settings password setup would stop that reset from happening. A number of the ads we seem to see lately do not seem to listen to the Special Offer settings. I do not see most of these ads, but that may be because I am using an ad blocker in my browsers.

Re: Forgotten settings password

If I could bring this back up, my password for Administrative Settings isn't working again???  After the last password problems I had, I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton's.  I changed my Administrative Password and wrote that password down this time.  When I tried to go into the Administrative Settings, it would not accept my password.  I've found out it is just on this one PC, so maybe my problem lays on here somewhere.  I tried doing the NRnR function, but I don't think it was a clean removal because it didn't ask me for a new password, it just kept refusing my old password.  I'll try a full uninstall tomorrow and see what happens.

Re: Forgotten settings password

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Norton's again, to remove whatever password that Administrative Settings is looking for.  I entered the usual password and tested it.  It works just fine.  I rebooted the PC and tried the password again and again it works correctly.  I wait to see how long it takes to not work again.  I know what the Password is, so I'm not entering the wrong password.
