Full system scan not working

I have set NS w/ BU to run an automatic full scan on Mondays @ 10am but it doesn't run however a manual scan runs fine.
Full scan is set to run whether idle or not (run when idle is not ticked) & this has been happening since I installed NS; previously I had NIS.

Re: Full system scan not working

Hello Doctor9fan

Please check your system time, location and time zone. Check for any time errors in event viewer. You can try turning off the scheduling and then turn it back on again and make sure you have Apply clicked also. Do you have any other real time security programs installed? We may have to try the remove and reinstall tool if the other suggestions don't work. Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Re: Full system scan not working

Hi Doctor9fan,

Is this a modification of the default (automatically created) NSwB (every 30 day) "Full System Scan", or is it a new "Custom Scan" which you have created?

If the latter, are both tasks failing to run?

Are all other scheduled Norton tasks running normally (as determine via Main GUI / Settings / Administrative Settings / Background Tasks (Configure [+]) ?

In either case (modified default full scan, or newly created custom scan), have you verified that the task's "Only at idle time" run option is unchecked?

Also, if this is either a Notebook or a Desktop /w a monitored battery backup ... then, if the task's "Only on AC power" run option is checked (enabled), is the computer plugged into an AC power source at the time the task is scheduled to run?

Re: Full system scan not working

All are fine & correct. I only have malwarebytes pro, have always had Norton for av software.

Re: Full system scan not working

This is a modification of the default scan, as yet haven't tried creating a custom scan. All other tasks running normally.
Only at idle time is unchecked & the device is a laptop which is plugged into the mains & the setting is set to run only when plugged in.

Edit: a custom created full scan works.
I've also noticed that antivirus auto protect is greyed out even though it's on, am currently in the process of removing NS using NRT & reinstalling.

Re: Full system scan not working

If you do decide to try creating/scheduling a custom scan, please let us know the results -

Also (FWIW,) yours is not the only recent report of anomalous behavior regarding task scheduling issues...
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/scheduling-gone-awry

Note that the other poster also updated from a previous Norton product (N360)...

Curious to know if you 1) did an in-place (over-the-top) upgrade of NIS to NSwB, or 2) did you first uninstall NIS (via Windows Control Panel) before installing NSwB

Also curious to know if you used the NRT (Norton Removal Tool) at any point during your upgrade from NIS to NSwB?

A any point did you find it necessary to use the NRnR (Norton Removal and Reinstall) tool?

Thanks for any added info you care to provide...

Cheers!
John

Re: Full system scan not working

I am on my way out the door for the evening, but there are reports of the Auto-protect being greyed out - on the page that's setting is on towards the bottom is there a request to reboot to compete remediation?

Hate to leave you hanging, but I'm sure others can guide you to the posts I am referring to.

Re: Full system scan not working

Yes it does say exactly that about remediation & to restart the computer which does get the auto protect green again, I also noticed that boot protection was set to aggressive when greyed out but I had set it to normal.

Originally I removed NIS via Control panel but can't recall using the NRT afterwards, have removed NS & used the removal tool & it does seem to have corrected the scanning problem, will continue to monitor that over the next few days.

Re: Full system scan not working

Thanks for the additional feedback - It is very appreciated.  FWIW, I suspect a possible (still unknown) conditional linkage centering around upgrading a previous Norton product that brings this scheduling issue on.  Some users seem more affected by it that do others - with it (possibly) affecting a greater number of the scheduled tasks.  It's certainly good to learn that by using the NRT, you may have cured the problem.

Which brings me to a couple of other questions, if you don't mind me asking...
Do you use a local vault?
If you do, did it remain in place operationally after using the NRT?

It would also be good to learn if using the NRnR tool instead of the NRT, the same repair (maybe) could also be effected?

Thanks again for posting back.

Cheers!

Re: Full system scan not working

I have an online vault John.

I also didn't choose to save the settings, quarantine items & etc when uninstalling NS w/BU this time but I did originally choose to save these when uninstalling NIS.

Full scan has now run on schedule twice so think that's sorted.

As for the greyed out anti virus the thing I did previous to seeing this was choosing help which then ran a repair so perhaps this was the remediation which required a restart.

Re: Full system scan not working

Thanks for posting back Doctor9fan - all valuable information...

FWIW, I recall past brushes with residual artifacting issues being reported by users upon moving between Norton product types having certain feature-set overlaps - scheduling anomalies being one of the "catch items" reported.

Thanks again and Cheers!

Doctor9fan,

The boot protection being set to Aggressive is normal operation in the situation you had, it occurs with the grayed out Auto -Protect setting and the message to reboot for remediation.

Without getting into this too deeply, you will see that the Aggressive setting provides protection at the earliest time in the boot process and if there is something that Norton may have missed because the threat modified the system right before restart, it could miss it - so such a situation would cause the Aggressive setting and also the remediation notice.  Basically the product will now handle Suspicious File notifications similar to the way it handles Threat Required Reboot notifications.

Hope that's clear.
