How to prevent Norton from making changes to my compacted email files?

The Norton Security virus scan made a change to one of my compacted email files, and several of my emails are now unreadable.

How can I have Norton just warn me about the possible malware, and allow me to delete the offending email attachment??

The problem seems to always be an attachment to an email that I have casually flipped into the trash.  Most of the time I go back and permanently delete the obvious virus carriers from the Trash folder, but sometimes I forget.  If the virus scan would just remind me - and not try to delete contents of the compacted file - the whole process would work just fine.

Thanks,

Phil

What email client are you using?  Some store all messages in a folder as a single large file and if a scan attempts to remove a malicious attachment in one message it risks corrupting the whole folder.  You need to exclude the specific folder/file, such as the Inbox, from all scans in Norton's scan settings.

I am using Mozilla Thunderbird 52.1.1 on Windows 7.

Thanks, but I want the folders scanned, and the results posted, just have no action taken.  I seem to remember there is a setting somewhere that tells Norton what to do if malware is found.

Any malware present in an attachment that would be detected in a scan would also be caught by Auto-Protect when the attachment is opened, so it is safe to exclude mail folders from routine scanning.  Please read the following articles about Thunderbird and antivirus programs for a better understanding:

Hello

You could create a daily reminder to just empty the trash bin at the end of the day and also get used to deleting temp. files. Set up a daily email to yourself to empty the trash folder before closing up or leaving the computer for the day if computer is on 24/7.

Thanks.
