I am getting when running NPE: "Norton Power Eraser rootkit scan is initiated by another user on this computer, and it is pending to complete, please login to the other user account to complete the scan.

error code: 0x8004500a.0

I use windows 7.

How do I get this fixed? It stopped live updates being processed.

I tried support chat but was told that unless I sign up for auto renewal they would not help me.

Hello rainyday. First off let me ask whether you are attempting to rid your system of a possible infection? Do you have any other antiviral software installed on the computer?

For everyday use, do you use a standard Windows user account? If so, the other user mentioned in the message could be the Admin Windows user? If this is the case, try logging into Windows with your admin account and see if that will clear the pending operation.

I never set up the admin account and had tried it anyway but to no avail.

If you only have the one user account in Windows it is probably an admin account. The first account you set up when you install Windows will be an admin account.

Try running NPE again, using the same settings you did for the last scan. Be sure you allow any restarts requested by NPE.

I did the retry many times. Nothing works. It is also stopping update processing. I have even deleted npe from c drive and nothing worked. It is what someone else in the blog had done. I just uninstalled all of norton and reinstalled it and it is still doing the same thing.

I am angry the chat person said they would not help me without me signing up for auto renew. I have been a customer for so long too.  Then they had the gall to say our link was interrupted when they had said they would email instructions to me.  I may be computer illiterate but do not deserve to be treated like that. Our link was not interrupted and the chat person had my email address.

The chat agent may have been thinking you were looking for malware removal for something that Norton had not been able to remove. That service, Norton Virus Protection Promise does require you have automatic renewal set up. 

Try contacting chat again. Another agent may see the issue for what it is. Be sure you explain that you are just trying to get the pending NPE process to stop giving you the message.

actually I explained that it would not let update work. I do not trust them and the person did say they were sending me a email on how to solve the problem but they did not.

It does not allow me to do any restarts, it does not say even how to do restarts. It only says to let it finish but never requests to do it. I did left click and tried admin also but get the same thing after allowing them to make changes on my computer. I will try it one more time

But my suggestion is that a different agent might be able to better understand your issue, and would be able to help you without requiring auto renewal.  As long as you use the link I gave above, that is genuine Norton Support and you can trust them.

Based on what you have tried, this seems like the next best idea. If you are not comfortable with the following steps, please contact support. Ask for a more senior agent.

  • Removing old Service Entry. (For Expert Users)
    1. Open Regedit (START > RUN > regedit)
    2. Locate NPE Service entry. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NPEService)
    3. Delete NPEService entry
    4. Restart the system
    5. Attempt to run NPE
