Norton intended this to be a one-way-only decision selection, so it's not done simply, or if at all -

In order to more properly (more fully) answer this question requires answers to the following;

  1) What Norton product (i.e., Norton Internet Security, Norton360) do you have installed,

  2) What is the version of the installed Norton product (i.e., 2012 [v19], 2013 [v20], 2014 [v21]),

  3) What operating system (i.e., Win-XP, Win-7, Win-8, Win-8.1) do you have installed.

Kind regards,

John

Just to set the record straight, it is possible to regain the Local Vault, regardless of what Norton Chat , their tech support or others say.  As John stated:  "Norton intended this to be a one-way-only decision selection, so it's not done simply..."

I will outline what needs to be done and if you decide you want to go thru the entire process, please tell us and we'll supply the necessary step by step procedure and the downloads needed in another post.

You have supplied some of the info we need - please tell us which edition of N 360 your are using - Standard edition or Premiere edition.

First of all - no matter if you desire to pursue regaining the Local Vault or not, Export your ID Safe Data in both the .csv and the .dat format to a safe location, such as a USB drive.  This is important, not only for the process of regaining the Local Vault - but also as a general recurring process to keep your log-ins "backedup" as a precaution.

Then, you'll be removing your current N 360 via the Control Panel, reboot, run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot, install N 360 version 6 (2012 product), insure your Local Vault is present, then upgrade over the top to the current version of N 360 and double check your Local Vault and presence of log-ins.

Yes, it can be a pain - but it all depends on how badly you desire to returning to the Local Vault - we'll be awaiting your decision.

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

You can go back to N 360 version 6 (2012) by following these instructions.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here www.norton.com/nrt

Download N 360 for the edition you are running
http://www.norton.com/n360s_6

http://www.norton.com/n360p_6

If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Do this in CSV format
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Run the N 360 download..
Run LiveUpdate (rebooting as requested) until LiveUpdate responds "no updates found".

If you use Identity Safe, try to log in. If it works you are done. If it does not, import your Identity Safe data.

Once all is working and your Local Vault has returned, select the correct link for the latest version of N 360 (dependent on what you have installed) and when the download appears at the botttom of the page select RUN.  I do not remember if it asks to retain your settings or not, but you do want to retain your settings if you are asked.

http://norton.com/latestn360

or

http://norton.com/latestn360p

Once that is installed, you will need to run LiveUpdate (rebooting if requested) until such time as LiveUpdate responds "no updates found".  Check to see if the Local Vault exsists and if your log-ins are present.  If Local Vault is present, but no log-ins, try to log into your vault and then Import your saved log-ins.

Please be very careful regarding the prompts to convert your vault to Online - you do not desire to convert - if you do you will be right back where you starteed from with only an online vault.

Any questions, please ask prior to starting the process.

Let us know how you get on.

I was referring to Standard or Premiere edition of N 360 - it will impact the download you do when revertting and upgrading.

More info please - as to when you receive this error message - where are you at in the procedure?

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

Hi, sorry for the situation - let me ask if when you changed from Local Vault to Online Vault if you changed the password for opening the vault?  With the local vault all you need is the password for the vault, whereas with the Online Vault, you need to sign into your Norton account using it's email address and password and then use the password for your Online Vault.  Did you go thru setting up the Online vault or just select the Convert Button to go to an Online Vault?

Please have a look in N 360 Settings > Identity Protection > Identity Safe > Configure[+] It should ask for you to sing in to your ID Safe - if you changed passwords, use the old password you had for your Local Vault.  If you did not change password, then use the one you had for the Online Vault  and see if it throws the same error.

There is something else that may happen and that is to ask you to setup a Vault - let us know if you see this option.

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

Just a guess here, Yank...

The OP is trying to log into their online vault with the v19 product.  Since they have already accessed their online vault with a v21 product, it was either setup or converted to the updated v20/v21 storage format which is not compatible with the v19 product they currently have installed.

What needs to happen at this point is...

1) Forget about the online vault for now (it'll be accessible once the v20 or v21 product is back in place).

2) Use the vault creation function in the v19 product to create the replacement local vault.

3) Import the .CSV vault data that was backed up prior to uninstalling the v21 product.

4) Upgrade the v19 product to either the v20 or v21 product.

Does these steps seem correct to you Yank?

Kind regards,

John

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

Hi John,

I undertsand the OP is trying to log in with their v 6 N360 (v19 NIS) aka 2012 product - however, there is a reason this is happening and has not happened in the past with past attempts to revert (that were made after an online vault had been established).

I asked about the passwords, because I do believe this may be able to be corrected by simply signing out of the Norton Account, and then there may be a need to create a Local Vault, unless it is already there and by not signing into the Norton Account it does not see the Online Vault and permits a sign in to the Local Vault.  I just don't know, but would like to find out, as I am sure this may occur again.

In regards to what you suggest  I agree with #1 - forget the Online Vault - since Teresa does not desire to keep the Online Vault anyway, she wishes to return to just the Local Vault on V 21.

#2 and #3  - I agree with, while #4 I have to clarify with an "over the top" upgrade, once the Local Vault is established.

I hope this makes sense to you John, and I hope the extra info does not confuse Teresa more.

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

Thanks for the answer in regards to the password,

A couple of questions, just to verify:

socialprincess wrote:

You did in fact uninstall via the Conrtol Panel prior to running the Norton Remvoal Tool - correct?

Which option did you select when you uninstalled via Control Panel - first or second?

If you used the first option instead of the second one, that may be the cause of your situtation.

I then downloaded older version of Norton 360 that worked

I then did live update of older version of Norton 360 that worked

Then I tried to log into Idenity safe

Then received error message Your profile was updated on a different machine. You must install lastest version to log in.???

Teresa

The error of not including the use of the second option is my bad and I have adjusted my instructions for future use to include using the second option during removal.

Let's try something to see if we can save you some work.  On the Main Page of N 360, does it say "Signed in as" with an email address behind it?  If so click on the email address and select sign out.  Then go to: Settings > Identity Protection > Identity Safe > Configure[+] and see if it asks if you desire to create a Local Vault.  If there is not and email address present behind "Signed in as" let us know and we'll have to try retry the entire procedure - using the second option during the removal.

Making Progress

I tried everything over again. So I went to Uninstall tool. I then went to download the older version of Norton. I then ran updates. Now I changed password for Identity safe.  Now when I log in I have my Local Vault back     I did import data. I did upgrade Norton to current version.Added my registration key.

Next question I still have Identity Safe Online with old password. How do I delete the online safe??

Also extension didn't  go to Chrome to give me Norton Identity Safe on  brower page. Works in IE 11.

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

Hi Teresa,

Well, things are progressing - so you want to delete your online vault.  Here is the Knowledge Based Article that tells you how to delete the Vault.

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-core/current/solutions/v82380415_EndUserProfile_en_us?q=online+vault

One thing that is not clear is that you must use 3 different incorrect passwords.  Using the same wrong password three times wil not work.

Also please tell us if you used the 2nd option during the removal the second tme through so that we can verify that needs to be done.

I can't help you with Chrome, I do not use it and do not even have a copy of it on my system.

Re: Identity safe I changed rom local to cloud can I change back.

I never seen that screen with both options. So no I never deleted info. I clicked on uninstaller earlier post. That just uninstalled didnt give me option to save or delete personal info.
