Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

I exported my LastPass vault to a .csv file. When I try to import it to Norton Password Manager, I get the message "An error occurred while uploading. Please try again." How can I find out what this error really is?

I have over 300 passwords in LastPass (though the file is only 53KB), so I thought maybe I was getting the error because that was too many entries to import. So I edited the .csv file in Notepad, removed everything but the header line, and added one dummy entry. Here are the two lines (I've also attached the .csv file renamed to .txt for uploading):

url,username,password,extra,,name,grouping,fav
https://www.foo.com/,userfoo,pwdfoo,, ,Foo,Travel,0

I get the same error whether I use the "LastPass" option and paste these two lines onto the page, or use "LastPass (binary version)" and open the .csv file. I've tried this on both Chrome and Microsoft Edge browser, both in Windows 10.

Anyone know what the error is?

Re: Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

No, but it made me try something else.

I exported my current Password Manager vault (just 2 entries) to see what the header looked like. I then shuffled my text file to match.

So it went from the LastPass format:

url,username,password,extra,,name,grouping,fav
https://www.foo.com/,userfoo,pwdfoo,, ,Foo,Travel,0

To this, which is how an export from Password Manager looks:

Username,Password,Title,Login URL,Notes
userfoo,pwdfoo,Foo,https://www.foo.com/,Travel

But, no luck, either pasted in or read from the file. I also tried removing the header and leaving just the data line, but no luck there either.

FWIW ~ my NPM > export CSV

url,username,password,name,grouping,extra
sample,sample,sample,sample,,

I tried this format, but still got the error:

url,username,password,name,grouping,extra
https://www.foo.com/,userfoo,pwdfoo,Foo,Travel,

Hi @GaryEricson,

Thanks for reporting in Norton Community Forums. Can you please provide below details and logs requested via private message?

- LastPass app version

- Operating system [Service Pack/32/64bit]

- Browser version [Are you facing same issue with different browsers?]

Re: Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

LastPass: 4.32.0

OS: Windows 10.0.18362, 64-bit

Browsers: Edge 44.18362.267.0, Chrome 76.0.3809.132

I'm seeing the same error on both Edge and Chrome.

What would be helpful would be to know the exact format expected when you select LastPass and paste text onto the page. There must be a spec somewhere that describes what the extension is looking for.

Deleted by me.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Wondering if anyone has a spec for the expected CSV values to import. I can't use NPW if I can't import.

Re: Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

Hi @GaryEricson,

url,username,password,extra,,name,grouping,fav
https://www.foo.com/,userfoo,pwdfoo,, ,Foo,Travel,0

Can you please try below suggestion and let us know the  status?

  1. Remove the additional comma in the first row.
it should be as follows - url, username, password, extra, name, grouping, fav
  2. Try to generate the export file afresh ( using the above instructions ) and see if it shows an additional comma again.

Re: Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

I selected "LastPass" as Source and entered this in the text box:

url, username, password, extra, name, grouping, fav
https://www.foo.com/, user1, pwd1, extra1, Name1, Group1, 0

I got the message "An error occurred. Please try again."

I'm not sure what you mean in #2 about exporting the file again. My first goal is to see if I can import text I've entered manually. If I can get that to work, then I can make the LastPass exported data match it.

Re: Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

On a whim, I tried the same thing without spaces after the commas. This time it worked:

url,username,password,extra,name,grouping,fav
https://www.foo.com/,user1,pwd1,extra1,Name1,Group1,0

So now I'll get the format of LastPass exported data to match and we'll see if it works. Getting closer...

Re: Import from LastPass: "An error occurred while uploading"

One more question: Are the values for "extra" and "grouping" discarded during import? I don't see those values in the Password Manager vault after importing the item.

If they are discarded, that would be unfortunate. In LastPass I often include extra information with a login, such as security question answers. And organizing my ~100 passwords in groups makes them more manageable.
