Installing Norton over McAfee

My computer came with McAfee security, but I want to use Norton Security, which I have but have not yet installed. Must I first uninstall the McAfee software? If so, will a simple 'uninstall' in Windows 10 remove everything, or is it more involved since this is a security program? Are there any tricks involved here, or is it pretty straightforward?

Re: Installing Norton over McAfee

No, a simple 'uninstall' isn't enough. Any security product has to be removed with that vendor's removal tool before installing a different product.  You can download McAfee removal tool from here. Then you can install Norton.

Hello

Please remember to restart your computer after using the McAfee removal tool. Also, please remember to run Live Update until all updates are received restarting when requested when installing Norton. After that, please try Live Update again to make sure you have all the updates. The current version is 22.9.0.71..

Thanks.

Hello gwalks

They are giving out the 22.9.0.71 in a phased in manner. It may not be available yet for you. They just started giving it out last night. Perhaps you will get it after you restart your computer. They use this phased in manner every time they come out with a new version. This way they can watch for any issues that may show up. You can check for it every day if you like. Just remember once you do start to get it, there will be a patch and you will have to restart after. Then check Live Update again because there will probably more parts to it. I think I had 3 parts and a patch, restarted and then got 3 more parts and I restarted again. I like to restart after there are program updates.

Glad to hear that you didn't have any issues this time. You can look over the settings. You need to use a Windows Admin user account to change any settings.

Thanks.

Ran LiveSafe again today then restarted and checked the version. It is now the 22.9.0.71, like you said. Thank you!

One thing I noticed during installation was a message about requiring either Explorer or Firefox as the browser. I've been using Edge, which I thought was Microsoft's replacement for Explorer. Is this true? Norton is not full-featured under Edge?

Re: Installing Norton over McAfee

Hello

Microsoft has not allowed any extensions for any security company to create any features which can be used with Edge like the Vault. There is some Norton protection while you are using Edge, but you do not get the total package. It is recommended that you use IE 11 which is still supported by Microsoft, Firefox or Chrome.

Once Microsoft gives Norton the OK, things are ready and waiting for release of useable extensions. Not very many extensions have been released yet. Some Norton customers do continue to use Edge, but I don't think they have it set as a default browser.

Thanks.

Hello bjm

They look like they are just password managers, not a security program. I know Last Pass is and True Key looks like a password manager made by Intel which now owns McAfee. It didn't sound like it's a security program other than it has McAfee name associated with it.

Thanks.

FWIW ~ just my reply to

by my read, Microsoft has allowed extensions which can be used with Edge like the (Norton) Vault.   BTW there's also RoboForm for Edge.  Just saying.  YMMV

I just check the extensions available for Edge from the Windows store accessible from Edge. Still no security products.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Okay, no security products at this time.  But, browser protection may comes thru other than extensions.
For example.  Webroot has the Web Filter Driver active for Edge browser and Webroot users can manually add Edge to Webroot Identity Shield.
Just saying.

Both Avast and MBAM block known malicious sites in Edge and Cyberfox without needing an extension.  What's Norton's problem?

Re: Installing Norton over McAfee

Wow. My initial question about installing Norton over McAfee has stimulated a lively discussion! But also some confusion. I installed Norton assuming it would protect me when I go online. Is that NOT the case if I use Edge as my browser?

And when I do use Firefox, why do I keep getting a pop-up warning from Windows 10 that Edge is safer than Firefox?

Re: Installing Norton over McAfee

Based on information Microsoft has provided to date, several browser-based protection and identity features that are provided in Norton products are not compatible with Edge, including Identity Safe, Norton Toolbar, Safe Search, Safe Web, Antiphishing, and Scam Insight.
We are investigating alternative ways to deliver these features for Microsoft Edge. In the meantime, we encourage customers using Norton security products to use Internet Explorer or other supported web browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox* to enjoy these features.

Re: Installing Norton over McAfee

Hi, I came to this page too late and had already installed Norton in a new win10 laptop on top of a trial McAfee. After reading advise here, I removed McAfee as instructed. Looks like Norton is working fine - should I do something to check that all is fine or reinstall? And if so, should remove Norton first?

Re: Installing Norton over McAfee

I would suggest reinstalling Norton. There is no way to know if the McAfee install might have interfered with the Norton install.

You can download and run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from    www.norton.com/nrnr

Be sure you read the before you begin section, and run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
