Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

I am trying to install a seat of my NS, which I have installed on desktops and laptops, on my Android smart-phone and am not able to do so.  Norton Support say that I cannot do this because of my regional location.

They say " the application on Android device has to be approved by Google, Certain application are restricted to geographic location".  I am in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Has anyone any information on this?

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi dforrest.

The best way to check this out is to open up Google Play on your phone and look under apps for "Norton Security antivirus".  If you can find that then installing should be possible.

I know that Norton Mobile Security (NMS) or Norton Security antivirus as it is currently called in Google Play, did have a limited availability in the past but thought it was fairly widely available now.  It is this app that provides the NS functionality on Android devices.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Good luck.

I cannot open "Google Play" only "Play Store" and "Norton Security and Antivirus" (which I understand is the app I need) is not listed there.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hello again dforrest.

Yes Google Play is "Play Store".

If NMS does not show up there at the moment then there does appear to be an issue which I am not in a position to solve for you at the moment.  I have already put out an inquiry about this issue and will come back if I can get any more information.  However it is the middle of the weekend so please do not expect anything too rapid.

I realise this must be a disappointment for you but I will do my best to get back with some positive news.

All the best.

Don't worry about it :-) Android has so many vulnerabilities nothing on earth can really protect it.

Until you can use your NS on your Android try the free Qihoo 360 Security. It's in the play store and has proven itself able to catch major attack malware that other products haven't.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi, dforrest. The way I did it was to go to the main UI and select More Norton. Click onto Open Norton, and you will see that you can send an email to the device you wish to install NS on. Open the email on that device, and select the Install Tab.

You'll be directed to the Norton Mobile Security App in the Google Play Store. It's actually called Norton Security and Antivirus, and you can install it from there.

It's a 30 day full trial, and if you have extra seats in your sub a day or so before the trial is up, just enter your new NS key.

If successful, it will show on your Norton Account Devices page along with any other devices.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Under normal circumstances I would have recommended that this thread be moved to the Norton Mobile Security (NMS) Forum as the NS and NSBU license coverage of Android devices is provided by NMS.  But as there is currently no simple way to redirect dforrest to the NMS forum I have not done so on this occasion.

Since NMS came out it has been known that there were issues over where it is made available.  I have always assumed that it has something to do with US law, though this has not been officially confirmed by anyone in Norton/Symantec.  When it came out its availability was quite limited but in the last year or two I have not heard of any concerns from frustrated users who could not get hold of it.  I do not know if this is because it was made more widely available or because only people who were allowed to use it came across it on Google Play.  I am seeking updated guidance on where it can be made available, as with the spread of NS and NSBU (which may also be limited in their sales areas) could bring more people expecting protection on their Android devices.  The same almost certainly applies to the iOS version of NMS though as the functionality actually provided by that is so limited its absence may be less of an issue.

Mike, thank you for you continued help.  I suggest that there are less people reporting this as they do not see that app in their Play Store, as I do not.

I hope that this can be resolved soon and I can get Norton Security protection on my Android device.

Hi, David. Does this link work for you ?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symantec.mobilesecurity&hl=en

This gives details of the app, but you need to install it on your phone from the Google Play store.

This unfortunately gives me the same result as before.  It opens the Google play window and when I attempt to install, it correctly asks me for my password.  When I try and to open the password page, it goes to a window headed "Google" with the message "The page you requested is invalid" and a broken robot below!

Unfortunately this again takes me the Google play with the same result as previously.  Below are step-by-step details of what happens:

  1. The link takes me to the Google play page for "Norton Security and Antivirus".
  2. I click on the "Install" button.
  3. After a delay I get a page saying "Please sign in to continue".
  4. When I click on "Sign-in" I get a page headed "Google", with the message "The page you requested is invalid" and a broken robot below!

The above was when I click on "complete action using" "Browser & Web Explorer".  When I "complete action using" "Play Store" I go to the "Norton Security and Antivirus" page which has a message "This item is not available in your country".

Hi,dforrest. Norton Guru and Mobile Master Andmike advises me that availability for certain Norton products may be regional.

A chat with Norton Support might be worthwhile, to see if they can help. At least they should be able to let you know.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi dforrest.

Sorry to hear the result of your Chat conversation.

I still have my query in with the team and hope to get an update before too long on whether there are any prospects on this changing.  But sadly you cannot count on that.

Therefore it would appear that there is no obvious way forward in the short term in applying a Norton app to your Android phone.  I think you need to decide how important this is to you and whether you would have purchased Norton Security if you had known this.  If you would not then you can contact Chat again and ask for a full refund, but that would also imply having to remove NS from your desktops and laptops.  Do let us know what you decide.

If you do keep NS, then you may like to check the Norton Mobile Security (NMS) forum occasionally, as that is the most likely place to hear of NMS being rolled out to new areas.  Or you can just check Google Play every now and again to see it has appeared.

I am sorry that things have turned out this way and that I still have no update from the team.  If I hear anything encouraging in the near future I will post it here.

Good luck for the future.

Thanks Mike for all your efforts.

Generally, how does this work?  If I am travelling to the USA could I install it while I am there and concerned to Wi-Fi there.  If I can, could I then continue to use it here in St. Vincent?

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi David.

I think that might work, though I have not tried it.  However when you return home you will not receive updates to NMS as your local Google Play will not recognise it as a valid app.  This has happened to me on an app which used to be available in the UK (when I installed it) but is no longer so I get no updates.

If it does work, you could always update the app the next time you are in the USA.

If you can get the app when in the USA it would probably make sense to ensure you registered it with the NS servers while you were there.

Do let us know if you try this and if it works.

Good luck.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

I do not know how updates for the mobile part of NS work.  Is there a "LiveUpdate" method or is it a question of periodic program updates being released through Google Store?

Kudos0

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi David.

I was referring to the update of the app itself which is normally done through Google Play.  The "Live update" part of NMS communicates directly with the Norton Servers, I believe, and so if you have loaded and registered a copy of NMS on your device, I believe but have not personally checked, that you should be able to get the "live update" when at home with an internet connection.

If you try this route then do let me know if my belief is correct or not.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Notwithstanding the above which is a possible work-around, I really would like to know what Symantec propose to do about this.  They sell NS as available on a list of devices, including the Android smartphone, without any warning that it is not available in all countries.

Hi David.

I'm sure you are not the only one who would like Norton to clarify this.

As a matter of interest is Norton Security actually advertised and sold in St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the moment, or did you hear of it and buy yours through a US link?

Hi dforrest.

Not sure if anyone from Norton will reply directly to your question, but may I seek a clarification?  In your first post I thought you said that you had installed Norton Security (NS) on desktops and laptops.  So it appears that you can install NS where you are (except from the Android part).  So have I missed something?

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Unfortunately it is not as easy as someone flipping a switch. There are export rules for software from the United States. The legal department probably has to get involved.

Andmike has asked his contacts to see if they can help. He will post back as soon as he hears anything. We have to ask you to be patient. Even if a Norton Employee tried to answer you, their hands are tied by the laws of the US, the the export process has to be followed.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi dforrest.

Sorry that you have heard nothing.  I did get some information a little while ago but then my computer started acting up and I have been a bit distracted.

From what I understand the way that Norton has chosen to issue this software seems to somewhat cut across the way that Google has decided to split up the world with Google Play and a consequence is that St Vincent and the Grenadines has dropped off the edge, for now at least.  As far as I can tell it should be available in Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, and the Dominican Republic, but other countries around you such as Barbados, St Lucia and Grenada are also not covered at the moment.

So if you happen to be in Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda or the Dominican Republic you should be able to get it but otherwise it looks as if you are out of luck.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and I am sorry that it has taken so long to get even this back to you.

I hope that this information is of some help.

Re: Installing NS on an Android Smartphone.

Hi All,

The way Google separates things is partly to blame, but not entirely.  They explicitly call out many countries, as Mike mentioned above, but others are left under the "other" category that we don't distribute to.  (There really is a "Rest of the World" category that would cover all the islands around you)  I'll reach out to our product owners, but I don't think we'll change this in the short term (gut feeling, not norton policy).

I'm sending you a PM, dforrest.  Check it out.
