Issue with Security Update on Windows 10

Hi, I recently purchased an ASUS laptop running on Windows 10. I installed Norton Security on it and disabled the Mcafee virus/internet securty sofware that came with my laptop.

After installing it, it updated the definitions and everything seemed to be working fine. After doing so, I opened up Norton Security because I saw a red "X" (under Security), so I clicked the FIX NOW button. It updates and shows me a green status. However, when I close the application, I get a Windows error saying that an unwanted security application is trying to gain access to my system (or something similar).

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my Norton product by running the NRnR tool from the link : http://norton.com/rnr It initially updated ok and then I got the error again saying that there is a security risk because my virus and spyware definitions are not up-to-date (see screenshot attached).

I also have a Windows 7 laptop, but with no issues running Norton Security. I would appreciate your help with this...thanks much!

Re: Issue with Security Update on Windows 10

Hi ajgodinho,

Welcome to the  Norton Community Forums!

... I recently purchased an ASUS laptop running on Windows 10. I installed Norton Security on it and disabled the Mcafee virus/internet securty sofware that came with my laptop...

The Mcafee product should have been removed before installing Norton, using that vendor removal tool, otherwise Norton will not work correctly.

So, first thing to do uninstall the present corrupted copy of your Norton product using the Norton Removal Tool  then reboot your machine

Second, here is ESET list of Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus software. After removal, restart your machine

Now go to http://manage.norton.com/ log in to your account, go to the Home Tab and select Download, then select Install on this device and follow the instructions. At the end run live update until it says no more found, then reboot even if not prompted to, it never hurts…

Let us know how things go.

Re: Issue with Security Update on Windows 10

Thanks @Rainbow_2 for your response. I will try your suggestion and let you know how things work out.

For now, I've used the uninstall tool for McAfee and have rebooted my laptop. I then uninstalled Norton Security completely and rebooted. Now, I see that Windows Defender has been automatically turned on. Do I need to uninstall Windows Defender too?

I was going to reinstall Norton Security, but for some reason it won't allow me to log into my Norton account. I'm getting the error as shown in the screenshot below. I will try to log in again later and see if reinstalling Norton Security fixes the issue.

Re: Issue with Security Update on Windows 10

Hi again @Rainbow_2, I tried what you suggested, but I'm still having the same issue. Like I mentioned in my earlier comment, Windows Defender may be the issue here. If you see the screenshot below, you will notice that it is turned on, but it is greyed out so I can't turn it off from that screen. So my question is, do I use uninstall Windows Defender as well using the same removal tool link you provided? Thanks for your help with this!

Re: Issue with Security Update on Windows 10

That is normal.  Windows Defender is Off.  If you scroll down and click Open Windows Defender you will get a message saying "This application is turned off...".

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

@ajgodinho

I'm glad you got a reply from Krusty13, a Windows 10 user.

Please note that I'll not be able to answer possible future questions Windows 10 related as I don't know this OS.

I replied to your op because the issue you were having happens whenever you install a Norton product on a machine where another vendor's software is installed or wasn't properly removed before installing Norton, regardless of the OS in use.

Good luck!

Re: Issue with Security Update on Windows 10

Thanks much @Krusty13 and @Rainbow_2 for your help in trying to resolve my issue. Looks like Norton Security (NS) is running on my computer. Like I mentioned earlier, initially after loading NS it shows that everything is ok with green checkmarks in all categories. However, after I run the Live Update and Quick Scan, it reverts back to the red checkmark under Security. I was looking at others who've had a similar issue and looks like the issue is probably with Windows Defender (WD). I found a separate thread with instructions on how to manually disable WD, I will probably try that. Thanks for taking the time to help out...it's appreciated!
