I've lost my Norton Search

A few days ago in another thread https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6386431#comment-6386431  I mentioned that Bing had made itself my default search provider, this despite my having clicked on the box to prevent such a change.

Today I've found that the Norton search box is no longer there, that Norton is not listed in my search providers in 'Manage add-ons' and, even worse, Norton is not in the Microsoft Gallery of Search providers (nor in the 'search for more' there. [I followed advice given here in the past and went to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-choose-internet-explorer-search-provider#1TC=windows-7

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/prevent-programs-changing-default-search-provider#1TC=windows-7  and

http://www.iegallery.com/en-gb/addons?callback=true&featuretype=2

I don't want Bing, I don't like Bing and I recently uninstalled Bing after it snuck in under an update (Firefox?) - a check just now via Revo shows it's gone.

Below are screenshots in case they help but what do I do next, please? Why isn't Norton in the Microsoft Gallery? Am I missing something?

PS When Browsing for the third snip via the IMCE Explorer stopped working and I lost everything. Thank you whoever set up the Auto-save function!

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

What options do you see when you click the Settings ( . . . ) button?

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

It's back - I've done nothing except check here before powering off. Norton Search is still not shown in "manage add-ons" as in the second image above - perhaps it shouldn't be there.

Thanks avjohnnie - I couldn't open the settings button last time but it's now showing the same as yours.

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Hello Taffy

The last time I looked, there was a listing there. I just looked now and it's not there, just my Google listing is there. However, last night, the free version of Malwarebytes found a PUP and said it was Ask.A.  That might have been the listing of it. I just restored it. I'm going to reboot and see if the listing is back. I don't know if Norton did anything recently that would have removed it from being listed there.

EDIT: I restored the 2 entries from the registry that Malwarebytes removed and put into quarantine that were the PUP Ask A. I think was the name of it. I know it had ASK in the name. I rebooted just now and the Norton Safe Search is listed again in Manage Add-ons with IE 11. I should have taken a snippet of the 2 files before I restored them, but I didn't so I could have put them in the do not scan section of that program. Next time I run the program, I will have to see if it comes up again. If you run Malwarebytes, see if it's in your quarantine and if it is, then you can restore those files and put them in the do not file setting in that program.

Thanks.

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Hi, Taffy. You can also go into addons in IE and in the Search Provider field right click Bing, and you can remove it.

Hi both.

F4E - when I right-click on Bing in the Manage Add-ons Search Providers, the "remove" command is greyed out.

Floplot - I'll check MBM (MWB?) later when I get back - shopping

IE will not allow you to remove the current "Default" search provider - You'll need to first select a different provider as the default - Then you can remove the one(s) you no longer want.

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Thanks for that advice, avjohnnie. The problem is that Norton is not listed in the Providers, per the snapshot above. The Norton Search box is now back - it appeared when my major problems shut-down problems were (I hope) resolved https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6405301#comment-6405301

but perhaps someone at Norton will look into why Norton Search isn't listed in the add-ons. Perhaps it's not an add-on?

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Just to be clear...

Since version 10 of IE the entries in the Search Providers section (of Manage add-ons) apply only to searches done using the IE unified Address/Search Bar - these entries do not affect nor apply to searches done using the separate Norton SafeSearch box located on the Norton Toolbar.

Microsoft recently pulled several Search Providers from their IE Add-ons Gallery - Ask and Google's Web Search being at least two in the list of those eliminated.  Thus far, no reason has been proffered by MS for this recent removal, but I suspect it may have something to do with the about to be released Windows-10 (and its accompanying Edge web browser).

Cheers!

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Hello Taffy and Johnie

I still have my Norton Search provider back. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I always had it. Then the other night, I ran the free version of Malwarebytes and it found a PUP. I said to clean it. I did notice that it said Ask in the name of it. When I went to check if it was there after reading Taffy's post, it was gone also. I then opened up Malwarebytes and restored the Quarantined items--2 files- and restarted my computer. I checked Manage Add-Ons again and it was back again. It's my 2nd choice for a Search engine, but I still wanted it there. Those 2 files are now listed as do not scan them. They were 2 registry files. Perhaps some scanner that you run as a secondary scanner removed them or a registry cleaner or something.. I use IE 11 and Win 7 Pro 64 bit, so Windows hasn't removed it yet although I don't have all those optional windows updates installed yet. I'm in no hurry to get my free Windows 10 yet as I need my Win 7 to help out here in the Forum. I'll probably get it before the year is up though. I only have this 1 computer so I need my win 7 still.

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Hi Flo,

Also to clarify - I did not mean to imply that any of Microsoft's recent updates which are aimed at Win-10 system readiness actually reach into a system's existing IE configuration profile and remove currently installed Search Providers or other installed Add-ons.  My comment was only meant as an attention bringer to the fact that these previously available providers have recently been removed from the official Microsoft IE Addon-ons Gallery website...

http://www.iegallery.com/en-us/addons?callback=true&featuretype=2

FWIW, I have not (so far) experienced the Malwarebytes Ask detection or quarantine action you've described on any of the systems that I have which also have the Ask / Ask-based Search Provider(s) installed.  As a rule I generally prefer to avoid using the Ask web search engine (due to personal dislikes) except for an occasional second-opinion test, but then only via the Norton monitored variant offered through Norton's "encapsulated" SafeSearch interfaces.

Cheers!

Hello floplot. Your solution just worked for me too - thanks. I recall seeing elsewhere that Norton uses Ask for this application.

Hi Taffy,

Sorry for the issue you are facing.

Can you please cross check one thing, traverse to "c:\program files (or) program files(x86)\" and see whether

"Norton Identity Safe" application installed in your machine.

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

Hello

Since Google is missing the Safe Web Icons for now, I have just added Yahoo to my Search Provider list. I just went to Manage Add-Ons and went to the Search Provider section. On the bottom of the page, there is a link something like I want to add more search provider. I ended up on the page which John shows. I picked Yahoo. I saw it wasn't listed, so I closed Manage Add-Ons and then re-opened it and it was listed as number 3. I wanted it to be number 2, so I moved it up in the list as the instructions said to do and done. Thanks.

Re: I've lost my Norton Search

If anyone can supply the specific items quarantined by MalwareBytes, that would help.  I'd like to work with them on calling it a False Positive for them to correct.

Thanks,

Hello @MJPHere are the 2 files I have in Malwarebytes Exclusions for the Ask  PUP A. I don't remember the exact  name of the PUP now, those are the 2 files from the registry. Thanks.

Hi Matt,
Lacking the Norton safe web icons in Google results, I also have used Norton Safe Search Ask for a few days until the fix was released the day before yesterday.
Last night I ran a full system scan with MBAM Premium (real time protection always disabled) v2015 and it didn’t detect Ask… (actually it didn’t detect anything...). Maybe MBAM fixed it?
I thought I should let you know anyway, even if you invited replies from users who had it detected.

Glad they corrected it!

However, FYI the database version used for the scan I mentioned in my previous post and which didn't detect anything, was 2015.07.30.05.
