Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

Ok i tend to use Chrome / IE for most of my browsing. I know many people slate ie for whatever reasons but i quite like the layout. quick and easy bookmarks without having cluttered toolbars and things all over.....

both of these are currently working with my current NIS installation and using a local vault for my passwords. however with recent imporvements to edge i figured i'd give it a try and was directed from NIS to install identity safe in Edge so i did that but it doesn't recognise my local vault and existing logins..

i have 2 questions. first one is simply how do i fix this and get it to use a local vault the same way chrome and ie currently do?

second question is IF and only if i chose to use an online vault how would i set the thing to login automatically? my local vault for exanple is automatically logged in whenever i turn the computer on and thus i never have to type any passwords. i go to a website and if its login is saved it's just click login and go. 1 click and done...

everything i've read about the online vault tells me that i have to login to it everytime i start a browser session which to me completely defeats the purpose of it saving my logins in the first place... it saves them so i dont have to login...

This one option is the single reason i still use a local vault instead of online in ie and chrome because i do not want to be logging in all the time....

if i have to keep logging in to a vault then i may as well just log in to the site directly instead of the hassle of dealing with a vault...

so how can i either set this option on an online vault. or set edge to access my local vault..

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

All browsers, except IE, now use a new ID Safe extension that is designed to only use a cloud vault. If you are still able to use Chrome, that is because you have the older version 1.0.5 of the ID Safe extension. Norton has superseded that version with the 5.x.x.x versions, and you may have no choice at some time, either from a Chrome update or a Norton update.

The option you show for starting your vault when the computer is started is only available for a local vault. It was removed for the cloud vault, and there is no way to get it to work.

The new login requirements for the cloud vault are implemented for security reasons.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

All: You can sync the Edge vault with another browser in its settings. That would at least solve a portion of the issue since IE keeps a local backup copy.

Best make sure i never update the chrome extension then.

As for the lack of auto login when computer started option thats exactly the reason i haven't converted to a online vault.

It's an option they really need to add. the entire point of a password manager is so you don't have to enter your logins and passwords all the time....

if im still having to enter passwords then what is the point of the vault at all.... my computer is already secure can't even get past the bios without a password and another required to get into windows... i really dont need a third password on the vault..

at that point i may aswell just let my browsers remember them all or just start using the keep me logged in / remember me options.

but i reiterate my point. the purpose of a password manager is so you dont have to enter your logins and passwords. if you have to login to the password manager then common sense says you may as well just log in to the website and not bother using a vault at all because it serves literally no purpose if you still have to login....

I was going to stop using norton years ago when they bought the online vault out until I discovered the workaround to create a local vault... but if that no longer works then guess its time to look for new security options when my current license expires. been using norton since the mid 90s..

an auto login can't be that hard of an option to add really. it's just common sense....

All: My post should have also stated that the sync is with the cloud vault and will be the same with the cloud vault if IE was used. Importing to Edge can be done with Chrome and Firefox browser logins. Please see my screenshot:

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

That doesn't help though. I don't want to import logins I could do that quite easily within NIS.

what I want to do is either:

A: set my browsers to use a local vault or
B: set a cloud vault to automatically login when windows starts. (as it already does with my existing local vault as per the screenshot in my original enquiry)

either of these things would be fine as long as it doesn't require me to login as that defeats the entire purpose of a password manager it saves and autofills your logins so you don't have to login to things. if you have to login to a vault to get to your logins it basically defeats the entire purpose of having a password manager as at that point you may as well just login to the site itself or just use the remember me options

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

Calvy, answering your questions:

A - As was previously posted Internet Explorer is the ONLY browser that saves a "backup" of your vault in the form of a .dat file on your hard drive. All Norton products now use a cloud vault verses a local vault as peterweb has posted. On IE your vault backups OR an older exported saved vault can be imported. Edge can import Chrome and Firefox logins with a download which is shown in my screenshot as well.

B - The current version Norton products, as is with my NSBU 22.15.0.54 do NOT have the setting in the IDS as you show in your original post screenshot. Therefore the vault cannot be set to auto login when windows starts. Peterweb posted about those changes previously as well. Older versions of IDS standalone have long since been retired although may still work if you have a copy installed. Updates for it are not a guarantee.

In a nutshell, the changes made to Norton are security related and are in keeping with the security requirements of current browser vendors and their changes which must be met.

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

Calvy: The recent hassle with the cloud vaults, and the ease of the bookmarks management, are the main reasons I keep using IE. I suffer the same annoyances you commented. Seemingly, there's no way out for now.

Not trying to be awkward, but by using the Identity square on the main page of Norton, you can  then select the Identity Safe Icon and once logged into your online vault (if not already logged in) you can select the COG Icon, and then the Export/Import Tab and go to the link at the bottom for the Automatic backup and it will take you to a .dat format backup of your cloud vault.  I have tested this on a WIN10 system running Norton Security Premium in Edge, Firefox and Chrome.

Am I missing something in regards to backup on you PC of a cloud vault?

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

Yank you are correct sir!!! The method you describe however doesn't address the "in browser" settings for exporting Edge and Chrome. I don't use FF so I am not familiar with it. You can import your vault info from another browser or dat file, however there aren't settings to export. Although exporting in the manner you describe would negate the need to export from within Edge or Chrome since they ONLY use a cloud based vault. The OP also wants Edge vault to remain open and not have to log in each time they use it. That ability is not available in Edge but Chrome can be set to run in the background after you have closed it.

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

There seems to be 2 trains of thought on these backups and importing logins.

1. The fact that you can import logins from a browser's saved logins.

2. The backup feature within the ID Safe for backing up the ID Safe vault contents.

All comments about each process are valid. Just a little confusing having both processes described in the same thread.

Re: Local Vault in Edge OR Auto login to cloud vault?

One could take this discussion a step farther, and remind users that still have a Local Vault, the Automatic Backup is NOT available on the Import/Export Tab of Identity Safe Settings, nor is there any sync between a Local and a Cloud Vault.  Comcast Norton Security Suite users with a Local Vault can auto login when Windows starts, but have to manually backup their logins.

Just my 2¢.
