Local Vault from old computer to new computer - Norton Security

I use the Local Vault on current computer Windows Vista and Norton Security.  I want to start using a new computer (Windows 10)  and install Norton Security, and also want to use the same LOCAL Vault on the new computer.  Can I do this?  HOW?

I have for myself, only the local vault, and I do not want a cloud vault.

Hello

Please disable Fast Startup. Please remove any pre-installed security program using the removal tool from the previous vendor.

Thanks.

So much to read and the first posting was not exact enough.  Which kind of "user account"?  Windows? Norton Product?  Norton Account?  Fast Startup?  On what? Windows or Norton Security?

I hope to read a procedure with all steps clear.  If I try to follow what is in the first post, I would not know what I'm doing.

Hello

What Norton product and what version is it. To find the version number, please look at Help>About. To turn off Fast Startup, please follow these instructions.

Here is a link for turning off Fast Startup in Windows 10

Hope it helps.

You have to learn about Windows 10.

Thanks.

New computer with Windows 10, now updated to build 1607 "Anniversary".  No commerial security protection product currently installed other than already present Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.  I plan to install Norton Security version 22.7.1.32.  This IS NOT YET INSTALLED.

(So Fast Startup is about Windows 10 and not part of Norton Security.)

Re: Local Vault from old computer to new computer - Norton Security

In a nutshell, following the link bjm_ provided above takes the IDDStor2.dat file from the system you currently have a Local Vault on and permits you to Import it into ID Safe of the new system.

I believe you will be able to answer all of your questions by reading the entire thread and making notes.  The thread does clarify things as you read along and others have asked similar questions which have been answered.  Please remember that in the very first post, Norton has to be installed (and updated to current) on the new system before you can Import the data from your old system.

You got to be willing to put in the time and have everything straight in your mind prior to attempting this.

Please remember that in the very first post, Norton has to be installed (and updated to current) on the new system before you can Import the data from your old system.

And another thing I found the hard way is DO NOT try to open the vault on the new Norton installation before copying the files, or it will not work and you will have to reinstall Norton again.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Local Vault from old computer to new computer - Norton Security

First on old system follow the 1st post and copy the 3 files and save them.

Here is a summary of the install to maybe help you understand the procedure.

On new system install NS and then run updates until they are done.

DO NOT attempt to open the Vault.

Check your NS settings and turn OFF tamper protection and check to see if Identity Safe is ON (should be by default)

Copy the files  you saved per the 1st post.

 Log off/ Log on your Windows User account.

Then you can open the Vault and it should be there. It will probably prompt to move to Online Vault but don't.

Should I disable Tamper Protection on the Source machine before making the copies of the three files?

I saw no padlock on the subdirectory but I made copies of the three files mentioned anyway, and directly copied onto a usb-flashdrive,... and still have not yet installed N.S. on the expected destination machine.  Norton Tamper Protection WAS enabled while I found the subdirectory and copies the three files.

No need on the source machine. Tamper protection only stops access to any changes to Norton's files. Just copying is OK.

Re: Local Vault from old computer to new computer - Norton Security

I have NS Premium and I'm using Windows 10. I wish to copy my Local Vault from an old computer into a new one and I encountered the following issue:

-- I cannot find the file "bcd9d034b0734a60b5e46159d5a75b01";

-- I can copy the file IDDStor2.dat.bak;

-- I cannot open the file IDDStor2.dat;

Regarding the IDDStor2.dat, the error message while trying to copy it to a pen-drive says that it can't be copied because it's being used. I add a pic of the screen where those files are located.

Thanks in advance for any help on getting around this early barrier...

Hi LinYu2,

If memory serves me correctly,  you need to close the vault before you can copy the .dat file as it is in use when the vault is open.

Hi Yank,

Your memory serves you pretty well, indeed, my dear friend!...

For the nth time -- I lost count of it long ago... -- I stand in debt to you for the timely and accurate help you keep providing in these forums to lots of people like me. I really mean it.

After following your guidance, I just completed a successful creation of my cherished dear Local Vault in my new computer. I'm really grateful to you. I just wonder why no one ever thought of creating a tool, besides and above the current "Kudos", to be assigned for consistently valuable contributions by some people in these forums. I deem it a simple matter of fairness.

To wrap it all up: I have no words (nor enough Kudos) to express my gratitude. So I'll just say this -- thank you, very much!

LinYu, thanks for your kind words - it is always nice to hear that my efforts are appreciated.

Just my 2¢ - Kudos are nice and I like to give them to "users" who provide helpful info and even from time to time to a Guru.  I personally think there is no need for a tool as we already have one - it's called "post a Thank You".   I guarantee you, your post and kind words mean more than a Kudo.
