Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

Norton Toolbar is always incompatible with the new version of Firefox.  Case in point: toolbar 2015.5.4.10 is only compatible with Firefox 40.0.3, and there is no new version available on Norton Update .Mozilla came out with 41.0.1 last week, and 41.0.3 today. And next week version 42 will be issued!  After talking to as many Mozilla people as would talk to me, I have learned this..Norton Toolbar will show incompatible with new version EVEN IF IT STILL WORKS!!  Why can't the toolbar be left operational and only disabled by the user if found to be incompatible? I'm sure Norton and Mozilla can work this out.

I have been forced to disable Firefox auto updates and use Firefox 40.0.3, which luckily was still available on line.

A second suggestion would be for Norton to place, in the description of Norton Toolbar, which version or versions of Firefox ARE compatible with that version of toolbar.

Mozilla came out with 41.0.1 last week, and 41.0.3

The Release Channel was only updated to 41.0.1 today.  Beta versions are not and have not been supported.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Hope Norton keeps up with the viruses a lot faster than it keeps up with Firefox. Currently I am sticking with firefox 40.0.3 so I can use Norton toolbar.  Hoping Norton and Malwarebytes will protect my computer.

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

One more question.. How can I update the virus and malware defs  manually so that I can continue using Firefox 40.0.3 with toolbar 2015.5.4.10?  For some applications I like to experiment with older versions of Firefox, but I still want to install and use the older compatible version of Norton with FF,and therefore need to update the virus defs to be safe.

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

Norton has live update which updates on a regular basis for viruses.  I use malwarebytes(free version) for malware and it updates daily when you use it. I'm assuming you are using Norton since you mention the toolbar.

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

I have disabled live update.  I want to update the virus defs and malware defs manually as they become available, and I would like to know how I can do so.

(I also use Malware Bytes Premium, Malwarebytes anti-root kit (Mbar) ,RegCure Pro, and Threat Expert Memory Scanner....I update these manually.)

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

Hello Papasquee

The main page of your Norton product should be labeled Run Live Update. You can do this as often as you want. You can not pick out which definitions you want to install other than install new version of Norton program which means going from version 22.2 to version 22.5. You should be getting version 22.5.4.xxx soon if you haven't already. Please run live updates often enough to keep up with the protection you can get from your Norton product. Automatic live update runs about once an hour. There are not always updates to be received though.

Thanks.

You can go to Norton web site and get the latest virus updates.

virus definitions (Intelligent Updater™) - Symantec ... - Norton.com

I find it a lot easier to use liveupdate.  Only use this when liveupdate will not work(which is not often)

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

This issue Never Ends...I have spoke to Norton, and Norton says the issue lies with Mozilla, Mozilla says the issue lies with Norton...however it seems almost every Firefox update, Norton Toolbar Identity Safe is Incompatible, not knowing when Norton will have an update with a Compatible Norton Toolbar.

I could not log in to Norton Community in Firefix, because after the Firefox update to 41.0.1 the Norton Toolbar is Not Compatible, so I Opened this Community in Google Chrome using Norton Toolbar Identity Safe...which I never have this issue with Chrome & Norton Toolbar Incompatibility, why is that.

So, I guess the Answer is Use Google Chrome.  Firefox Crashes way to often, Chrome does not...same when I used Windows 7, now using Windows 10, Firefox still crashing and the Incompatible Norton Toolbar issue follows...

Thanks Floplot, read that, however by the end of the month, is not good enough.  More inconvenience "hoped that many of the features will be ready at the end of October" so for the next 26 days do without, or restore back to the previous version with security risks.   Google does not have this issue...so I will use Google, forget Firefox.  I get tired of hearing those who rant on why do I need or use Norton Toolbar or Identity Safe...I have used Norton since its debut as Norton.  I have used Identity safe since its debut...as I am kind of set in my ways with over 100 user/psw, than you

Hello

You could as a temporary fix use the Safe Search and use the Ask Search just as a temporary thing. I know no one likes Ask.com including me. I would get rid of it as soon as the Norton Toolbar is fixed up.

Yes, you can also use Chrome in the meantime also.

Given the continuing recurrence of this incompatibility problem, there is obviously a big disconnect in the technologies of the toolbar and Firefox.  I have switched to Chrome as I am tired of dealing with this on Firefox every time there is an update.

The other issue besides Norton Tool Bar and Firefox is Firefox Crashing several times a month, right in the middle whatever you are doing and always has the box to report what you were doing at the time, however the report sent I would think includes what happened.

Plus Firefox asks for your E-mail Address in case they need to contact you.  I always type in please e-mail and let me know why so many crashes in a month, or year and for years...when Chrome does not have this issue.

I do a lot of Research, want and need Norton Toolbar especially Identity Safe to work with any of the 3 browsers I use.  NORTON FIX IT  and I too will not upgrade Firefox  beyond 40.0.3   sorry for the Inconvenience Norton from Us End Users, of course I can only speak for myself....however it gets old paying the $$$ for software, hardware etc... to end up having to post here or any forum of issues not of Our Doing, it is between Firefox and Norton

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

Hello

Sorry, I keep checking our place to see if there are any updates about the release. There is an Announcement on top of this Forum about the Compatibility and the Firefox Toolbar. I don't have any exact dates either since Norton will not release an exact date until some one actually says they got an update. What usually happens is that a user says in the Forum that they got an update for the Toolbar. Then one of us reports to our place about users getting an update and we ask what is this update for. That is when the Admins have to find out what the update is about and then they can make the Announcement about the update.

Some one mentioned that they are tired of Firefox crashing because of the Toolbar. When Identity Safe is released in Phase 2 of this project, there will be no causes that could be attributed to Norton. You will have to see if this will be true or not. If there is still a crash issue once the new Toolbar is completed, if mentioned in the Forum, then I can report it. I'm jumping the gun a little since phase 1 hasn't been released yet.. I'm guessing here, but soon could mean another week or 2. I know you are all so very anxious to get your new Toolbar. Even though I don't use it, I'm also anxious for it to be completed.

Thanks.

Just an update on IE and Chrome.

Chrome recently blocked all third-party plug-ins and add-ons.  Only Google Approved from now on.Norton products are approved, but any good programs not Google produced won't work.

I find IE too intrusive (Especially Edge with WIN 10) Big Brother Syndrome.  Telemetrics now added to Win 7 . Win 7 vanilla still spy proof, but MS indicated they are considering disabling Win 7 without SP-1 (SP for spy?)

Open source Firefox is still intrusion proof when used with NoScript and Ixquick search engine. At least until Homeland Security strong arms them. Also making ample use of the Block selection in Program Control of Norton Firewall settings.

Hello

I just read today that Windows 10 does a lot of spying on you. So now Google has started doing the same thing as Mozilla with the plug-ins needing approval from Google before they can be used. Telemetrics  have been a part of Windows 7 since Windows 10 came out if not before then. I have to read through each Windows Update now to see if it has anything to do about Windows 10. If it does, then I don't install it now since I don't want to go to Windows 10 until the year is almost up if I can delay it that long. I'm still on Windows 7 Pro and want to stay that way.

Thanks.

Windows 10 spying can all be easily shut off.  It just does not come set that way.  I shut all of mine off.  You all are making a big deal out of nothing.  I don't know if they allow live links on this site, so I will enclose it as code:

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/how-to-keep-windows-10-from-spying-on-you-125730399429.html

Just google "turn off windows 10 spying" and a whole bunch of references will show you how.  Good Lord.  Too many years running crappy Windows 7 has made you paranoid.  Windows 7 is so crappy that every year or so you have to wipe your hard drive and reinstall it just to decrapify it.

This discussion has digressed.  I thought it was supposed to be about Firefox and Norton Toolbar.

Toolbar update out today, but it removed Identity Safe on my Firefox 40-

Norton says it will take an indefinitely longer time to re-program the Identity Safe for Firefox 41 and above-

Absolutely ridiculous- it's not a mission to Mars program- other software companies have not had these kind of delays-

For what Norton is charging for it's product, this delay is just unacceptable.

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

This whole situation flat baustst sucks, as a loyal subscriber for over 20 yrs, one Firefox Update after another and Norton's LiveUpdate which I run daily and after each Firefox Update, now for over a month I have been waiting on the Compatibility Fix, so Identity Safe will be of use again after v40.0.3.

So much of Our time is wasted trying to resolve these issues, which I have been on the Merry-Go-Round ride by Norton pointing to Firefox and Firefox pointing to Norton as the problem...even after updating Firefox 41, Identity Safe is incompatible once again, yes I have read the articles by Norton, which this issue DOES NOT Happen with Google Chrome, why that is I do not know...I know, do not use Firefox and probably quit my bitching, which is not going to happen.

...so I restored Windows 10, to a previous Restore Point prior to the v41 Firefox update, all is back to normal continue using v Norton 40 / Norton Toolbar 2014.7.12.7 - Norton v 21.7.0.11

Now after over a month waiting Norton makes another revelation (the divine or supernatural disclosure to humans who use Identity Safe & Norton) to the effect of "the recent Norton's Update to include Identity Safe 2015.5.6.76, for the Norton 22.5.4.24 products via LiveUpdate - The VAULT feature is missing from the Norton Toolbar on Firefox 41 & 42,  (NCR no crap really), now it is missing from v4.0.3

I still have Firefox v4.0.3  but there went my Vault/Identity Safe naturally, after doing the Restore Point 1 Oct. and posting to this Norton Community....and for what to only read the many of us users still inflicted with this issue, even after the Patch Update or LiveUpdate and Norton's Announcement.

I love what Ron1 says: "Absolutely ridiculous- it's not a mission to Mars program"

not to mention whom-ever is origin of this issue, Please do not Go to Work for NASA, or if you do, STEP AWAY FROM THE CONTROL PANEL in HOUSTON"

Sure I would think all Users of Firefox should Boycott.  I wonder if Firefox/Mozilla would love that.  However, we continue to waste our Time and Money...who needs Clients or Customers right?  I guess we have been re-classified from End Users, to End Sheep Users, we continue to follow the flock, as if Windows Users do not have many years of frustration with Microsoft Products and Vulnerabilities or the "Not Responding" saga.

End result if I was to Restore to a Previous Point, I would be without Updated Norton and Virus Protection too, as well as Firefox without update NSS v22.5.4.24  I know it is probably all of xFinity Comcast's fault.

Continue on with the SNAFU SOP Run-A-Rounds and Charlie Foxtrots...signed, Ab-by Nor-Mal

One has to wonder if this is some kind of pi$$ing contest between Norton and Mozilla, as the problem does not seem to occur much with other browsers.  I like FF, but have committed to Norton on Windows for years and now Android also.  Chrome works well and will probably just stick with it unless Mozilla can convince me to switch back.

Your observation is why Norton is rebuilding Firefox Toolbar/Identity Safe to be more in-line with Chrome.

Re: Loss of Norton Toolbar with Firefox Updates

bjm_ GURU  Gramps_Md  strnj1  personally, I do not care what the issue is, or if Mozilla Firefox is rebuilding or getting in line with Chrome, as Gramps_MD said, and myself...this issue does not exist with Chrome, I rarely use I.E. 11, however, Norton Tool Bar w/Identity Safe works with I.E.   Its been over a month with Firefox this go around, so time to move on, Chrome is far better and Google offers so much.

Besides, why should I trust Mozilla Firefox with my Usernames and Passwords, or spend the time of transcribing over 100+ Usernames and Passwords from the Vault to Firefox, just one more program to update, which Norton Identity Safe asks if you wish to save any new username or password, if I wish to update an existing Username & Password, and I can quickly access Identity Safe from Chrome or cough I.E. 11 if I need to, or Norton itself...

...especially Mozilla Firefox with their track record and Toolbar of their updates and the many other times through the years we the End User using Norton Toolbar go through this with Mozilla Firefox.

Then I have the issue every time Firefox crashes, which for me is frequently, the Error Report window pops up asking "tell us what you were doing when Firefox crashes"  and provide an e-mail address if we need to contact you, I reply with "Please E-Mail as to the cause, whether it is Firefox or my Computer is the issue...as I am clueless as to why this keeps happening. Thank you"  Firefox receives the report of what happened totaling over 700 words and 16,000+ characters, looks pretty in-depth to me.

I do a lot of Research (not marketing and advertising for annoying online ads), and I may have 10-20 tabs open at once using Firefox, of many different sites all with different Usernames and Passwords...and at the same time I have Chrome open.

Allows me to Research using Firefox and Chrome for my Personal needs separate from Research.  8-16 hours a day x 365.  I do not need the added frustration dealing with Firefox crashes and waiting for Firefox to restore what I already had open.

I stay current on all updates....be it Windows 10 / Win7 or Vista, dating back to Windows 3.0 & DOS3, plus all installed software, and their drivers, etc...spending more time just to stay updated.

I trust Norton, have used their Product since Norton became available online. Firefox has gotten worse, it is slower than Chrome, and what can I say about I.E. slow and a piece of crud.

I also use Mozilla Thunderbird w/profile manager/switcher, since I have over 10 e-mail accounts, with no issues there...only the repeated issues with Firefox and Identity Safe/Norton Toolbar.

I appreciate everyone's input, suggestions on this topic and time spent.

I truly do not feel it is Us, other than we are out of Using the Norton Tool Bar with Firefox, if we want to use Identity Safe.  We still can continue using Norton.  And we do not know what the issue is between Norton & Firefox, unless Firefox is by Norton, then I agree you are paying for Norton, the Customer is Always Right
