Malicious download detected

Win 10, Norton Security. Trying to download  a game mod, I get a Norton window saying "Malicious download detected, download canceled." I believe it's a non-infected file. Per Norton faq, tried turning off Download Insight, no improvement. Tried Disabling Auto-Protect *and* Disabling Smart Firewall, still the same. I'm surprised there's any part of Norton still active to block the download. How do I disable Norton enough to allow the download, so at least then I can scan it and decide if I want to risk it? TY.

Re: Malicious download detected

Appreciate the response, but doesn't work: per Norton faq, turned off Safe Web, same window appeared. Also turned off Identity Safe, same. Also disabled Smart Firewall and Auto-Protect as a test (all 4 off at once), still Norton canceled the download.

The download is from fileplanet.com, which Norton banners as "Dangerous Web Page Blocked" (even after disabling all 4), but which I consider generally a worthwhile site. There must be *some* way to disable Norton Security (I promise I won't hold Norton accountable if I get a virus from this download...).

Re: Malicious download detected

Yeah, I'd already mentioned that I knew that it was shown as unsafe. A) I disagree with that warning, and added my comment to the Norton Safe Web report. B) As a file repository, it's possible that some file offered by the site is malicious, but that doesn't mean the whole site is. The one cited threat file is only a PUA. C) I still want to download one of the files from that site, and despite disabling Safe Web, Identity Safe, and even Auto-Protect and Firewall I can't override Norton's cancelling of the download...

Re: Malicious download detected

In the original post I'd mentioned I'd turned off Download Insight Notifications, actually meant Download Intelligence (per Norton faqs).

I did telephone Norton support, the (quite rushed) responder took control, couldn't figure it out, and just kept trying other browsers until Edge did succeed. He had no suggestions as to why Norton couldn't be disabled on Firefox or Chrome. I'd grade it 5 out of 10.

handvprice,

curious, do you have W10 Fast Startup enabled?

Lets hear from Community

Thanks

Nope (I had read previously online about that interfering with Norton, and had verified it was off).

Hi handyprice,

Sorry to hear about your problem. If you believe this site is been falsely reported or the file is marked bad when it's safe. You can report it here: https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/  and have Norton check it out.

Hello handyprice

If you are trying to use File Planet. that is the cause of your issue. File Planet used to be part of GameSpyArcade., better known as GSA.  GSA unfortunately closed up over 4 years ago. I believe that File Planet may have closed up before or slightly after that time. I used to be an Admin of GSA and was a life time member from about 1997 until it closed up in 2013.

You must be trying to get an old game mod? Try getting the game mod from the makers of the game if they are still around. Please see this article I found in Google.

Re: Malicious download detected

Appreciate the response. Fortunately, since I couldn't find the desired mods for the old game anywhere else, somebody is still hosting FilePlanet.com, and I was able to download them, and they tested safe by Norton. I did report fileplanet.com to norton as a site that shouldn't be blocked. Knowing gamers, I'm sure there's *some* software on the site that's a no-no......

Nothing ever really answered why Download Insight couldn't be turned off on my sysem, though.

Re: Malicious download detected

Had the same problem and changing settings from within Norton didn't help a bit. Also, not surprised the support staff didn't have a solution. The fact that some browsers work and others don't gave me a clue to get rid of that Malicious Download Detected and cancelled problem. What worked for me :

In Firefox, go to add-ons and disable Safe Web.

In Chrome, go to more tools>extensions and disable Safe Web or just use incognito mode.

Hope this helps for the future.

Re: Malicious download detected

Hello

I don't know how, but fileplanet.com  is now reported as Green OK in Safe Web. I just looked at the site and to me, most of the files in it are from 2013, the year that it closed up with the rest of GameSpy Arcade. It sure looks different from the Fileplanet.com 2013. That version cost money also. This one is free. Google doesn't seem to have much or any current information about it either. I will have to check with my other GSA friends who still play games.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.
