Media SKU Number

We just renewed our subscription to Norton and both computers have Version 22.6.0.142. I noticed when I clicked on About that both computers have the same Current SKU numbers and both have the same Family SKU numbers, but they have different Media SKU numbers. Should they have different numbers for Media SKU? One computer has Windows XP and the other has Windows 10. By the way what does Media SKU number mean? One computer (the XP) is a desktop and the other (Windows 10) is a laptop (notebook).

The XP computer was just updated when we renewed our subscription to the newest version whereas the Windows 10 has had the latest version. A Norton tech renewed our subscription for us and updated the XP to the newest version.

Re: Media SKU Number

As anyone who has ever worked in retail will tell you, an SKU uniquely identifies a particular product and differentiates it from similar, but not identical products, such as the same shirt for sale in a different color.  SKUs are important to retailers and manufacturers but are completely meaningless to consumers.

Re: Media SKU Number

Thanks for your reply. However as a consumer, if I was buying a particular item, and it came in more than one color, I would want to know what  colors the item came in. Most stores tell customers all that is pertinent to a purchase and I believe a customer has a right to knows as the customer is spending his/her money for a particular purchase. Otherwise the customer might go somewhere else to purchase the item and/or get a different brand.

Re: Media SKU Number

When buying a pair of pants, do most customers care that the blue ones have a SKU that ends in 05, and the red ones SKU ends in 07?  SKUs are just internal code numbers for computer inventory control.

In your Norton product, all the customer really needs to know is that they have Norton Security Deluxe, or Premium. They do not need to know the SKU?

However as a consumer, if I was buying a particular item, and it came in more than one color, I would want to know what  colors the item came in.

A SKU is strictly a tool for inventory management.  If a store carries a shirt with a size 16 collar, and regular sleeve length in blue, it would have a different SKU number than the same shirt with a 17 inch collar, or a shorter sleeve, or a different color, or style.  The store uses SKU numbers to track and replenish each item as it sells them because it is easier to identify a specific product by a number, rather than a description of its color, size, style, etc.  It has nothing to do with consumers.  A customer would not go into a store and say, "I see you have this shirt in 88744552, do you have one in 88744553?"  A store would only use the numbers to know that they just sold the last 88744553 and need to reorder it to get back in stock.  They would not care, or even need to know, what the number actually meant - they would only be concerned that they are out of a SKU that they carry and need to order more from their distribution center.

Stock Keeping Units allow the supermarket to manage their inventory and manage millions of different product lines. If the store is running low on Cherry Cola cans it has a unique identifier to isolate that product and manage fulfilment throughout the supply chain. The supermarket can order the SKU, the SKU is quoted on the purchase order, and the SKU is quoted on the invoice, printed on the box and so on. Without some form of unique identifier managing inventory at the supermarket would be a logistical nightmare.

Re: Media SKU Number

Hello

If you are trying to fill out a form to register your purchase online, the form will ask for Model number, SKU number from the receipt and other identifying numbers, but that is to identify what the product is and to find out where it was purchased.

In my opinion, I may be wrong, but I think SKU's come into play more often when you make purchases online. When you get your order confirmation by email, it will show the different numbers for the different colors or different styles. I just bought ink online. I know I use # 126 for my style of ink, but each color of the ink will have 126 in it in addition another number indicating the color.

SKU's aren't as noticeable when you go into a store directly to make a purchase. I think we just had some lessons in marketing and inventory.

Thanks.

Re: Media SKU Number

What I don't understand is that one of our computers had one Media SKU number and the other had a different Media SKU number when we renewed online. However, one computer already had the newest version of Norton and the other had the newest version installed when we renewed. The computer that was just recently bought has Windows 10 and the other that had been upgraded to the newest version is a Windows XP. All the other SKU numbers were the same.

One thing that I just thought of was only computers with Windows 8 or later has the Early Launch Anti-Malware feature---that might be the reason for the different Media SKU numbers on the 2 computers.

Thanks for your comment.

Hi Holly:

It's possible the Media SKU refers to method of installation (e.g., download of full offline installer from www.norton.com/latestns vs. installation with the stub installer from the Download button in your Norton Account vs. online renewal where days are added to the subscription but no new software installation is required, etc).

I'd also like to know what each of these SKUs mean.  It's an important question since there are several users in the thread NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again? who purchased their Norton product at Staples Canada and weren't aware that co-branded software (i.e., a Norton product with a Staples logo on the main GUI) would be installed on their devices.  Customers with this co-branded layout have now been waiting over two months for Norton to push a "special" v22.6.0.142 product update via LiveUpdate.

Symantec employee gerry_egan's comments in Advertisement in Norton Security with Backup? imply that Symantec can use the serial number and one or more of the SKUs (Current / Family / Media) to track purchases from retail partners like Staples, but we still don't know what each SKU means.  We would also like to know whether all three SKUs are associated with the product key (i.e., should never change during the life of the one-year subscription) or whether one or more SKU can change depending the source of the software installer.

I have no idea why that would be an important question, or what possible benefit it would be to know a product's SKU number, unless you were maintaining an inventory of the product.  SKUs are internal tracking numbers, not model numbers (although a company might choose to use the model number as part of a SKU).  Imagine a company like Toyota having to maintain an inventory of parts for all of its car models going back years and years.  When you go into a parts department, you might say something like "I need a water pump for a 2008 Camry."  They might have to order one from the warehouse.  They will use a part number because it makes everything so much easier for them to order, ship and track.  For Toyota, and their millions of parts, the SKU number is vital.  For the consumer, not so much.

It's relevant to me because Symantec employee gerry_egan has indicated that at least one of these SKUs is used by Symantec to track if your Norton product was purchased at Staples Canada.  Users with co-branded Norton products who have been affected by long delays for product updates have had to uninstall their co-branded product and then download and install an "unbranded" product using the latest available v22.6.0.142 offline installer from www.norton.com/latestns or www.norton.com/latestnsbu as a workaround.  At the moment we have no idea if this is a temporary or permanent solution or if Symantec will use these SKUs in the future to detect that we purchased our original software from Staples and delay our next product update again.  Troubleshooting would be much easier if we at least knew which of the three Current / Family / Media categories of SKU is used for tracking the retail partner who sold the product.

I have an unused product key for Norton that I purchased on sale at Staples Canada last December.  I'm shopping for a new Win 10 computer and I won't be using this spare key if there's any chance that Symantec could bung up future product updates by forcing me to install one of these co-branded v22 products.

Knowing the relevance of the Current / Family / Media SKUs would not be an important issue for me if Symantec could manage to deliver product updates for these co-branded layouts in a reasonable amount of time.  I just want to know the general definition of these three SKUs and what they track - I don't need the entire inventory list of the SKU numbers for each product and retail partner.

Re: Media SKU Number

I still don't see what information you could get from the SKU number that you don't already know.  If Staples is selling branded Norton products, each product will likely have a SKU number exclusive to Staples.  But you already know what the product is and where you bought it.  A SKU number won't tell you if a particular update somewhere down the road will be problematic or not.  If there is an existing problem with a Norton product sold exclusively by Staples and you have that product, chances are good that it is affected.  As far as I know, Staples-branded products could not be upgraded until now.  If your question is, will all co-branded Norton products, or certain Norton co-branded products, receive updates later than non-branded products, that is something that Symantec could probably answer without reference SKU numbers.

Re: Media SKU Number

According to Permalink  Norton may ask the user for the SKU (which one? I have 3) and while it's easily accessible if you have installed the Norton and they system is working if you haven't installed it but have just bought it, then there might be a reason to want to know the SKU.

I do wonder if the SKU is different for the versions sold that activate on purchase/checkout?

But like others I can't think of any overpowering need/usefulness apart from those and I doubt that Norton does not have a workaround if one runs into a problem with them.

Hello

Btw, the Staples-Canada 22.6.0.142 version was already pushed out and is available by using Live Update. I think it has 3 parts to it.

Thanks.
