I just got anemail about an emergecy patch from Microsoft that I should install but I can't find it. How do I get it It says no updates needed when I do a check so how do I get the patch for Windows 10?
Hello Holly. I haven't ever received an email from Microsoft concerning patch availability so I WOULD SUGGEST the email is a scam. DO NOT click any links in the message and delete it. If you have ran Windows Update and no updates are offered, your system should be up to date. Check your OS build info in Windows settings, if you are on build 18362.387 YOU ARE CURRENT. There were patches released a few days ago, however at least one is a manual download from the updates catalog site. The patches references are being discussed in this thread and will bring you to the build number I referenced. Hope this helps.
No the email was from Norton.
Here is a copy of the email from Norton:
Microsoft released an emergency patch to address a security flaw in Internet Explorer | View online

What is Happening?
In a rare move, Microsoft is urging Windows users to install an emergency out-of-band patch via Windows Update to address a security flaw affecting Internet Explorer versions 9, 10, and 11. Microsoft verified that the flaw is actively being exploited and could allow a cybercriminal to run malicious code on an affected PC.
Microsoft also announced a flaw in Defender, its built-in malware scanner. If the flaw were exploited, it could trigger a denial-of-service condition, potentially resulting in app failure.
What Should You Do?
Although Norton offerings can help protect customers against security threats such as malware, it’s important that users install recommended patches. When prompted, allow the Windows Update to run on your device. Or, manually run a Windows update.
Holly please check your windows installation for build 18362.387? What is the build of your windows install? I haven't seen an e-mail regarding that notice and I as I posted earlier Windows Updates should deliver the updates for you when checked. Please let us know what your build is.
I wish Norton would give more information like the KB number so people know what they are talking about.
Here is a list of recent MS KB updates.
Some are automatic, some are Manual -Check for Updates and some have to be downloaded from the MS catalog. Near the bottom of each KB it will show how to get that update.
Windows Build is: 18362.387
I just googled about this Microsoft warning and the following link tells about it, but not how to get it other than an update and I have all updates .https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/24/microsoft-emergency-patch-windows/
Yes indeed Holly. You ARE up to date with Windows updates and already have as shown from my install of Windows.
Thanks for the Info.
The emergency update for IE was released on Sept 23 and the only way to get it is to download from the MS catalog. It will not show up in Windows Update.
It is KB4522016 and brings W 10 to Build 18362.357
I have IE disabled so I ignored that update.
I am now on Build 18362.387 which should include all earlier updates.
Indeed. KB4522016 gets to the current build. My intent was to show that with KB4517211 Holly would be completely up to date.
I see 4 KB4522016 updates listed in the Microsoft catalogue but I'm not sue which of 2 of them I should download-- the one for Windows server or Windows 10. I think it is windows 10--am I right?I have version 1903 for x64 base systems
I downloaded the update marked Windows 10 and it doesn't show in my update history--should it? I went to IE and the Build is 18362.387 which I had before the update I did today (KB4522016).I went to IE after insUpdate Version 11.0talling the update and About IE says:
Internet Explorer 11
Update Versions :11.0.146 (KB452007)
PS I restarted my computer after it had installed.
I just noticed this update is in my list of downloads for today so I have it It's just not listed in my history for update of windows 10.
Thanks for all your help.
