my desktop norton security says antispy app is off, why?

Hello,

My desktop Norton Security 2015 says antispy app is off, why?

When I start my computer and have it running, I can see the Red x, down by the clock in the activity field, which normally alert of something important.

When I click the red x, a dialog pops up claming my Anti Spy app is off. And that my Windows Defender is also off.

Why is that, and how can I solve this?. I have tried to select in the dialog and click "Activate". But nothing happens.

Hi theillustrator,

From the man page of NS, select Settings > Antivirus > Antispyware and Updates Tab and verify that Antispyware is set to ON.  If not turn it Off > Apply and then turn it back ON and Apply again.

Let us know if that helps any.

Any clarification you can give with what you are referring to with the "select in the dislog and click Activate".  Also where are you getting the info on the Windows Defender from?

Hello,

Thanks for the help.

Nothing changed unfortunatley in the settings/NS anti spy off/on

The dialog is in Swedish called "Åtgårdscenter", in english "Response center" I believe. See attached printscreen image in the PDF attached. This dialog opens when you click by the "clock" in the computer/activity field. The windows saying "1 problem need attaention" or something in that line. I have a Swedish Windows 8.1 OS.

Hello theillustrator

Do  you have Norton Security installed on a mobile phone by any chance?

May I know what is the status of Norton Security when you open Norton Security UI? Does it says it is at risk or it says secure?

I finally got to the same spot you are at in "Action Center" - but I seem to be short one option  across the bottom?  I turned off my Antispyware and duplicated that way.  Only problem now is I don't know what is causing yours not to come back on?

<EDIT>  Perhaps I should mention that once I turned off Antispy I immediately got  Red X on both the system tray icon and the main page of the GUI.  But I did manage to get rid of the RED X by selecting IGNORE. (Main page > Security > Advanced).  So it is possible for it to be turned off, receive the warning, but not display the RED X.

Sometimes a product setting does not stick for some reason. In your Norton settings, try turning the antispyware feature OFF. Restart your computer. Then turn the antispyware feature back on and test.

An possible issue with Windows 8/8.1 is the Fast Start feature. With this enabled, you never actually get a full shutdown, which is needed by Norton, and other programs, every once in a while to fully update itself. See this information from Windows Eight Forums on how to turn off this feature. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-...

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: my desktop norton security says antispy app is off, why?

Hello theillustrator

Since you have Norton Security, Windows Defender would be turned off and should be turned off or disabled although some people just leave that program alone.

Do you have any other real time antispyware program running in your computer.?

I would also like to clarify that since you are referring to antispy app., you do not mean your mobile phone?

You have Norton Security installed on 3 devices: desktop, laptop and mobile phone?

Re: my desktop norton security says antispy app is off, why?

Hi Floplot,

The anitpsy app: i mention it because that is how it is written in the windows dialog in the Swedish OS, in contrast to the English OS where it instead reads: "Installed Spyware Protection programs".  Its an odd trasnlation to swedish actually, becasue programs "program" is spelled the same and means the same. But, thats how it is.

I have Borton installed on: 1 laptop (Dell) and 1 Mobile (samsung). And since yesterday I installed it also on additional 1 laptop (HP). Thats the only units I have installed Norton on.

I understand that Windows Defender is turned of , when norton runs, so I havent activated W.Defender. But it still shows up in the same dialog.

No, no other real time Spyware installed or running, to my knowledge.

Hello theillustrator,
You must consider the instruction provided by Peter in his reply Windows 8.x has a feature called faststartup, which can interfere with some working of Norton. Turning off it for a while may help solve your issue. Else we must look farther.

Re: my desktop norton security says antispy app is off, why?

Hi, this seems to be the Action Center issue. There was an update from Microsoft on this as well. Let me help with you with the steps to resolve this. Start command prompt in admin mode and then type 'net stop winmgmt' to stop the WMI services and then press Enter. Navigate to the location c:\windows\system32\wbem\ and rename Repository folder to Repository.Old. On the Command prompt window, type net start winmgmt, and then press Enter. Restart the computer and check. Please let us know if you need any assistance on doing this. TIA
