My last year with Norton

Each year installing 360 on a 3 machine network, it was a pain; nothing went smoothly. In addition, twice in the past year, I have received a Norton error message.

This required working w/ a tech who took over my machine and solved "Norton's initiated problem". This made me an unpaid member of Norton's IT department.

That was all duck soup compared to installing Norton Security w/ Backup on my present 5 machine net. I was going to protect phones also. I would not put this product on a phone for any reason.

Machine 1, my primary computer, Windows 7; Sunday 8-9, installation failed because of a "Norton trial subscription" not activated and not removable. Went through level 1 and level 2 w/ the Philippines spending most of the day. They gave up and kicked it up to level 3 w/ a promise of 72 hours to a solution. That was unacceptable and got worse. It is now 168 hours and Philippine support tells me that level 3 needs 1 to 2 more weeks. Also they cannot tell me where level 3 is or how to contact them. Thus my primary computer is disconnected from the net and used just for spreadsheets. Of course I cannot use advanced functions because they reside online.

Computer 2, a Windows 8, had a problem I cannot remember now; but it got to level 2; many hours lost.

Computer 3, Windows 7 went okay, but NS refuse to let me download a version of Firefox.

Computer 4, Vista downloaded, but knocked out the speakers in the monitor. I have installed external speakers.

Computer 5, no problems I have heard of.

I went through 10 pages of this forum and counted about 1100 issues dealing w/ NS in the title. For 36 pages, that is about 4000 and probably a total of over 10000 including those that did not have NS in the title. How do you stay in business?

I am in the Process Control world where deficient software is not tolerated. If we used Norton quality software, every refinery and chemical unit would have malfunctioned or maybe exploded.

Re: My last year with Norton

hi Gerard

I can understand your annoyance and frustration with the problems you have been having it does seem rather difficult for you.

I wonder why you have been installing Norton 360 each year.

It is possible to renew through the Norton auto renewal, or manually however, it is often more economical to purchase from a local retailer online or by visiting one of the stores.

Even using a retailer purchased key there is no need to install Norton each time so long as you are buying the same product each year, if you move from Norton Internet Security to Norton 360 for instance you would need to reinstall.

At the end of a current subscription the best way to renew for a further 12 months is to click on the link at the bottom of the main Norton UI where is says "Subscription Status" where it will take you through the steps to enable the new subscription by clicking on renew in the new window which appears after being connected to the Norton servers where if you have purchased a key from a retailer you can click on "I have a key or code to enter". After a few moments connecting with the Norton Servers the new subscription will be activated.

There is no need to install Norton again. Do this for each device, I think there is a way of doing this through your Norton Account but I have never tried this, when I was not in the location of any of the devices I would let my father know the key which he could enter himself by the same method for his device, this was particularly so when I was working away from home.

I have carried this out successfully for a number of years for upto 5 devices including Vista, Windows 7/8/10. I do have a collection of unused Norton discs though. With the new Norton Security in many places there is no need to even have a disc these days.

You would need to install Norton Security with Backup on the first occasion if/when you decide to move away from Norton 360.

I don't no why this year Norton it has lots of problems. I have been using it since 2005. With this new Norton every time I want to redownload my stuff  it keeps blocking them or removing them and the choice I had. I needed to delete Norton and reinstall all my programs that its showing them as dangerous thread to my PC and after reinstall Norton. I guess we have to find a new anti virus software.

Re: My last year with Norton

hi ZayaAssyrian

Norton uses Download Insight and File Insight as part of it's protection/detection based on a number of factors behaviour, age, usage. There was a problem with this when the latest version had just been released but the problem has now been solved.

When downloading a file sometimes the owner of the software does not clear the files with Norton which can cause and alert or quarantine of those files. Norton will usually let you know with the "slide out" notification when in most cases you can over ride the Norton action. I used to have a problem with a program I use which is usually updated monthly when Norton used to block it now the developer and Norton have sorted it out and it no longer is blocked.

Part of the problem recently is that whilst we all knew Windows 10 was being developed Microsoft did not always let Companies like Norton know what was happening and did not give details so that compatible software could be prepared then Microsoft decided to rush the introduction of Windows 10 which was several months earlier than first planned, even Windows 10 was not really ready for release. Details for Edge were kept rather quite from other software developers so I believe there is no AV Company offering to protect it fully at the moment.

Should you have a particular problem you would like assistance with visit the forum where there are many experienced users who are very willing to help.

Re: My last year with Norton

Yes, I did buy 360 each year because of the deep discounts periodically offered at retail stores.

That should cause no problem if a product is designed correctly.

You have missed my main point. I have an HP machine, 3-4 years old, that came with a preloaded Norton trial. I did not activate because I was using a 3 license version of 360. It was never a problem with subsequent 360 installs.

With NS w/ back-up, it downloaded, removed previous Norton products (so it said), and refused to install, A pop-up said that the trial version of Norton had expired and needed to be activated, which made no sense.

I couldn't get beyond that; nor could a level 1 guy, who turned it over to a level 2 guy, who kicked it up to level 3. The other problem went to level 2 and got resolved. This consumed about 10 hours 8 days ago. I did not even call about losing the speakers, fed from a Realtek card.

I did only install NS on 1 computer and it just downloaded on the next ones.

As far as installing 360 each year, I followed instructions that came w/ the disc or key.

Re: My last year with Norton

hi Gerard

I understood from your original post you were having problems annually, my apologies I did not understand correctly.

I have always found the annual renewal with a purchased key goes smoothly although, I know there are occasional delays with the Activation Servers when busy.

It is unfortunate that you move from N360 to NSwB did not go smoothly I tried a different avenue to the one you took which worked for me.

I am not totally properly familiar with the speaker problem so will not try to explain however, I could ask one of the experienced uses of the Forum to have a look at your post, he may be able assist if you are still having problems. Perhaps you would let me know when I should be pleased to contact him.

That sounds (sorry) to be an interesting situation, Gerard ...

Are your new speakers also being connected to your system via the Realtek adapter?

Kudos0

Re: My last year with Norton

They are external and require power separately. I don't know beyond that.

This was an old Vista e-Machine; Saturday the power supply failed and because of it's age I just replaced it w/ a new Lenovo all in one. NS loaded okay on it.

Re: My last year with Norton

The issue is the same as in my 1st post.

On my principal machine of 5 on my net; NS downloaded, Removed 360,then refused to install because a Norton trial subscription pops up and demands to be activated even though the 14 day period ended 3 years ago.

A promise of 72 hours by level 3 techs was made by level 2 on 8-9. A recheck on 8-13 gave me a changed time frame of 1-2 weeks. We are now at day 12 from the original date or day 8 from the change. I don't know which governs.

So; I transfer stuff as needed from a now off-line unprotected computer and Excel, which I use constantly is now just a calculator as the advanced function library resides on-line.

Hello GERARD

What version of NSBU are you trying to install? I'll try and get an Admin to look at this thread on Monday most likely.

Hello @Mohan_G

Can you please try and help GERARD get his NSBU installed on one of his computers.? Tech Support up to level 3 couldn't get past a trial version has expired.

Thanks

Re: My last year with Norton

I have Norton Security w/ Backup, 10 license, purchased at a Home Depot, not downloaded.

The computer w/ trial still alive is an HP All-in-One Touchsmart 610 - 1130y.

It was preloaded likely w/ Norton Online Backup, 30 day trial.

A lesser possibility is Norton Internet Security 2011, 60 day.

Those were the available selections. I did not select either, just took what it came with and put 360 on it.

P.S. I installed W-10 on my W-8 machine, what an improvement, but had to replace Edge w/ Explorer because Norton did not have extensions or something. I don't use Chrome, but get pop-ups a few times daily saying
to add Norton extensions to Chrome.

Why am I in the middle of this? You guys need to get these issues resolved amongst yourselves.

Re: My last year with Norton

Hello GEERARD

Nothing is supported on EDGE yet. Microsoft has not given any information yet to companies so they cannot do anything with the Toolbar on Edge. Edge does not support any extensions yet so nothing can be done to Edge by anyone yet. For now it's just taking up space.

You went to Tech Support through several levels and couldn't get it resolved. I was trying to get help for you from one of the Admins in this Forum so you wouldn't feel so angry at Norton and so you can use that computer that doesn't have it installed. Butt if you don't want us to try and help you, that's ok also.

Thanks.

Re: My last year with Norton

Hello,
(Please keep in mind that unless a red badged member helps you, you're being assisted by co-users)

This was an old Vista e-Machine; Saturday the power supply failed and because of it's age I just replaced it w/ a new Lenovo all in one. NS loaded okay on it.

By this, I assume that NSBU (the product you've purchased) is already installed successfully(atleast on one machine), activated and linked to your Norton Account.

For Win8.x/10, please disable faststartup before performing any steps.
I'ld suggest you to try doing steps on Win10 after checking it on the other machines.

Windows 7 went okay, but NS refuse to let me download a version of Firefox.

I'm sorry, but if the download is corrupt, it may trigger the Norton download/file insight to flag it malicious. Please retry. If its not the case and you tried the official Mozilla link, please share the exact details like error messages...

Computer 5, no problems I have heard of

Please explain...

I don't know the significance of a red badge.

All of the things you suggested were done by level 2 in a 4-5 hour session, plus a detailed examination of the registry.

Re: My last year with Norton

It is now 20 days since Norton ruined my computer. The promises of level 3 help in 72 hours are long gone.

The later promise of 1-2 weeks passed 2 days ago.

The red hats have been silent.

I just got support again after a 20 minute wait and have a new promise of 24 hours until I hear from level 3 support.

It probably won't happen, but if it does, it is just a call, not a solution.

I will have 5-6 questions verifying that I am really the right guy and as most people from Norton do, they will ask me to restate the problem.

It is too much trouble to read the case number file or in the forum, look at my first post.

I am considering my next step; many hours of my time have been wasted and I have a computer reduced to an off-line calculator.

Re: My last year with Norton

The third promise from level 3 of 24 hour response is now past 2 days and no word from the red hats,

With my loss of equipment and many hours spent when I could have worked at my engineering consultant fee rate, I think we are well beyond small claims court. It is time for me to call my attorney.

Re: My last year with Norton

Hi floplot,

I am following this case closely, mindful of what you also suggested elsewhere. Not being able to provide specific help about Gerard's issues, I can only sympathize with his ordeal, which seems to persist for so much longer than what would be generally acceptable. Most people will understand that a solution may take longer than desired by all parts involved, but the lack of contact is harder to accept.

To Gerard I would just ask, if I may, that he keeps being patient (as he has been so far) and to also keep in mind that there has been a good number of people, users like himself, who have been trying (and are still trying) to be helpful, just for the sake of helping. I'm certain that he acknowledges this and keeps the gracious help provided by such persons where it belongs -- above and separate from his grudges with Symantec's support. I'm sure he does.

Thanks.

Re: My last year with Norton

People in the forum like yourself have been supportive except for one immature individual.

But those who can work on it, the red hats and formal support have given up, I think.

I now have a new problem that appears to be malware. The only machine I have updated to Windows 10 starts populating search boxes and other entry boxes with strings of 1s and 0s. Did a full system live update last night, no cure. I am about to start a chat session now. This will be hours lost. I am about to switch to another system, but fear uninstalling Norton. Had a bad experience once try to purge a machine of McAfee.

Hello GERARD DONOVAN

For malware issues, we usually recommend you go to one of the free malware removal sites where trained volunteers will work with you to help you clean up your computer. They do not access your computer, but can tell what to do by the results of scans they ask you to perform. Everything is free including the programs they offer.. It does take time. Sometimes you may have to wait your turn. Pick one of the sites, register with them and post a description of your issue. Please do not try and fix by yourself. Here is a link which provides the sites.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users. The new site is listed first in this link.

Please also let matt help you. He is a Symantec Employee, one of the Red Hats as you refer to them. He doesn't do Malware Removal, but can help with your other issues .

Thanks.

Re: My last year with Norton

One simple suggestion to Gerard:

If I were you, as a gesture of appreciation for all those who generously provided (or attempted to provide) some help, I would consider spending a few minutes to leave an explanation about what actually caused the problem and what was the solution encountered. I believe this would be a nice gesture of appreciation from your part, and it would also provide real help to people who may face similar issues in the future.

Best regards.
