NIS Toolbar/SafeSearch/ID protection still incompatible w/ Win 8.1/Explorer 11. Patch available?

Upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 last week, and in IE 11 the Norton Toolbar and SafeSearch do not function, and identity protection is listed as incompatibe. The workaround that has been suggested does not appear to be a safe alternative, so when will Norton release a fix?

Hi AlanVT,

Please verify you are on NIS version 21.1.0.18 (Support > About from the Main Page of NIS).

Manually run LiveUpdate (rbooting when requested) unitl L:iveUpdate responds with the specific words "no updates found".

Open your Vault to the all log-ins page, select the Gear Icon and on the General Tab verify that Norton Safe Searchis check marked.

Also, on the Menu Bar > View > Toolbars - verify a check mark is in front of Norton Toolbar.

I assume you are referring to the suggestions to uncheck Enable Enhanced Protectied Mode?

Re: NIS Toolbar/SafeSearch/ID protection still incompatible w/ Win 8.1/Explorer 11. Patch available?

Hello Yank,

I have the very latest version of NIS (21.1.0.18), and it is installed correctly and constantly fully updated (manually and automatically). Toolbar cannot be added to IE 11 browser - when I try to add the Norton Toolbar by right clicking on the Explorer browser and checking the "Norton Toolbar" option (which seems unchecked by default), the "Disable Add-on?" popup appears. SafeSearch does not function, and the Toolbar simply will not activate.

Does Norton have a patch available, or the courtesy to provide paying subscribers a timeline for when a patch will be made available?

Hello??? Anyone here???

Is Norton offering a patch, or at least some information on when a patch might be available would be much appreciated.

While we try to get an answer for you.

Are you sure you are not using IE11 in Enhanced Protected Mode? That would be using 64 bit IE features that are not compatible with the Norton Toolbar.

FWIW,

EPP and 64Bit EPP are separate (additive) options in the IE11 (final release version) browser for the Win8.1 64Bit OS...

It may well be a different situation with the IE11 (Release Preview) browser for 64Bit Win7 - but since I've not tried it, I really can't say.

BTW; EPP is also a valid option in the IE11 browser running under the Win8.1 32Bit version OS - but there's no 64Bit processes option, of course.

Kind regards,

John

Re: NIS Toolbar/SafeSearch/ID protection still incompatible w/ Win 8.1/Explorer 11. Patch available?

Hi Peterweb,

Yes, Enhanced Protection is enabled (disabling this is the suggested "workaround" I referred to earlier). My concern is that, while this workaround may permit Toolbar and Safe Search to run, overall, Explorer 11 browser security will be compromised (perhaps not so, I simply don't know).

Do you know if temporarily disabling EPM in order to enable Toolbar and Safe Search compromise security?

Thank you for responding, and following up with Norton. This is an exceedingly frustrating issue, and to my suprise, Norton is not communicating, leaving customers in the dark. I have subscribed to Norton for many years, and this is out of character for them.

Your security concerns often have more to do with how and where you surf than your browser settings.

From avjonnie's post, try setting the EPM on, but leave the 64 bit item unchecked. See if that works. This could be a way MS is dealing with giving the user EPM functionality while still allowing compatibility with third party add ons.

Hi Peterweb,

Yes, avjohnnie's observations are correct, however the only way to enable NTB, search, identity and vulnerability protection is to disable both EPM and 64-bit processes for EPM.

Do you know if Norton has responded to anyone about this issue?

Thanks.

Re: NIS Toolbar/SafeSearch/ID protection still incompatible w/ Win 8.1/Explorer 11. Patch available?

FWIW,

My observation has been that it's a very mixed bag of results - some report that none of the v21 add-ins work if EPM is enabled,  while others find that only the NVP add-in fails when EPM is selected...

My situation happens to be the latter of only NVP not working - this is on the one remaining Win 8.1 test system that I've not reverted back to v20.  And since I consider the NVP element of equal importance to the other two Norton add-on elements, I've elected to operate with EPM disabled on that system.

BTW; All three v20 add-ons require EPM to be disabled.

Kind regards,

John

Seems pretty sad to suggest a workaround that puts your computer at risk. Upon disabling the EPP - it even pops up asks if you want to do it just because it exposes your computer to more risks.

That is a choice a user has to make for themselves. The added protection of EPM, or the convenience of add ons.

As long as the user has a good A/V solution installed, they can still feel safe disabling EPM and having the convenience of the add ons like the Norton products offer.

You have to remember it is not just Norton add ons. There are very few add ons that will work with EPM.

Thanks for the link Peterweb. It is good that Norton has acknowledged the issue, yet unfortunate that there is no indication a patch is in the works, or that there will be a patch.

You are also quite right, this issue is not effecting only Norton. I have several other vital add-on's that are not compatible.

Again, thanks, and let's hope for a quick resolution.
