Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Suddenly, I'm getting Facebook notifications marks as [norton antispam]. This has nothing to do with names that are blocked. It just began out of no where for no apparent reason ... well, I suppose there is a reason but as to what it is, I'm looking to you happy folks to give me a bit of assistance.

I'm using Outlook 2013 and it's only the Facebook notifications that I'm seeing this problem. I talked with Support and he said it was a Facebook issue which they were going to correct within 24 hours. That wasn't a bad story but hey, let's get real. Plus, 24 hours has passed.

Any advice will be more than appreciated.

(Please type very slowly in all responses in order for me to understand)

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

It is possible that it is a Facebook issue. If they changed something in the sender's address, or made some content change in the notifications, it is possible that Norton is seeing this as no longer being from Facebook. This would be a protection feature to protect you from spammers pretending to be Facebook.

If the support person says it would be corrected, it could indicate that Norton has detected whatever change might have been made to the Facebook notifications, and they are in the process of sending out a new anti spam definition to allow the new format.

As for the 24 hour timeline, it is the weekend, and things can sometimes get delayed a little. Today, Monday is a holiday in some areas, to you may have to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday to get the update.

Thanks for the reply. What you say seems to make sense. What would you advise though, if this persist?

If it does not stop on its own, try white listing from one of the notifications you have received already.

I take it that one does this Whitelist in the Settings, under Antivirus and thus under the Scans and Risk tab, and under the Exclusions ... here's where I might be a bit confused ... do I put in the email address coming in from Facebook in here?

I'll leave this for someone that actually uses the anti spam features.

We can deal with this if/when we know we need to look deeper.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

I've talked to two different Techs at Norton and they are at a loss as to why this is. One wants to put the onus on Outlook and an update.  :-)

If anyone else is experiencing this and has indeed found a fix, please advise.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Annnnnnddddd ... no one apparently is having this same problem, unless they're too embarrassed to come forward. If so, it's ok. No one will laugh at you, at least in your face.

Since there is no stopping Anti spam marking my Facebook Notifications as spam, I've gone the easy way and simply shut this thing off. In addition, it's not marking one specific email as spam as it should. Therefore, this is of little use till Norton does something to update a fix

With this, I shall ask to be excused and left to wallow in mine own self pity.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Hello Nickerson Have you looked in your antispam settings and added one of the marked messages to the allowed listing? Before doing so. Also check the message "headers" in one of the messages by following these guidelines. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/view-e-mail-message-headers-cd039382-dc6e-4264-ac74-c048563d212c See if anything suggests a different sender than the message insists it intends to be.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

I have added the marked messages (actually the address from Facebook) which accomplished zero. I have shut off Antispam and the problem of course does not continue. Also, the Antispam is not doing its job to stop a bogus email I continue getting. It's simply marking the wrong one or two.

Going to the site you gave me, I can go to the address that Antispam is incorrectly marking as spam, go to File in Outlook 2013 but I cannot do anything by clicking on Files. In other words, clicking on File does zero so I cannot get to the so called properties. Usually these directions on these sites are more problematic than the problem itself.

So we are no closer to finding out why Norton suddenly out of the blue began marking several of my Facebook notifications as spam, unless you can come up with the solution. Thus, Antispam continues to be shut off.

I appreciate your efforts and again, if you've got something else to offer, I'm waiting. Thanks!

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Here is how to view headers in a message:

View message headers

In Outlook 2016, 2013, or 2010

  1. In an open email message, click the word File.

  2. On the Info tab, click Properties.

Header information appears in the Internet headers box

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Tried to do that. When the email is opened and I click on File in outlook 2013, zero happens. Therefore I cannot get to properties.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Hello again. I can only suggest to try a repair of your product from the Control Panel under "Programs and Features". If that doesn't correct the issue do a removal and reinstall of your MS 2013 product. If you cannot open any dialogues from within outlook that program is the issue.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

I personally do not believe clicking on Info from the File in Outlook is meant to open anything. It is a header, giving what I can open what is seen below, e.g. Open & Export / Save As etc.

I've done a repair spite and have turned Antispam back on but do not believe this will fix the issue. I'll let you know what happens.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Hello

I opened up an email in my Outlook 2013. I clicked on FILE on the Upper Left and saw Properties on the bottom of 3 listings in the center. Not on the left side listings.

I have Office 2013 Click to Run in a Win 7 Pro 64 bit desktop computer. I believe this is what SoulAsylum is referring to.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Ok, I know understand why we are not connecting. Under View, we have three options as to how we can view mail. I have mine set to Compact and I don't open that mail, it's simply there for to read as you know.

When I click on the File, it will not show properties. But if I double click on the mail, then of course it opens up into a different window. And now I can get into Properties.

I'm going to give you the top part of what I see in Properties. This is one email notice from a Facebook & without Antispam turned on.

Return-Path: <notification+o0_sjs4y@facebookmail.com>
Received: from tr2spm09.toronto.rmgopenwave.com ([66.220.155.143])

Now here it is with Antispam turned on.

Return-Path: <notification+o0_sjs4y@facebookmail.com>

From a quick glance, I'm not seeing anything different. What do you think?

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Hello again Nickerson. What I see is this "Return-Path: <notification+o0_sjs4y@facebookmail.com>
Received: from tr2spm09.toronto.rmgopenwave.com ([66.220.155.143])

The underlined portion is a bounce to openwave which is a mobile carrier in Toronto, Canada. Unless you have OpenWave as a mobile carrier with FaceBook notifications set for that this is a spoof. Mark it as spam accordingly if you are not with openwave in any way.

The initial IP address 66.220.155.143 traces to this:  https://www.ip-address.org/lookup/ip-locator.php?track=66.220.155.143

Mark this as SPAM!!

Cheers

Re: Norton antispam suddenly is marking legit mail as spam

Thanks for the reply. A couple questions then. Even though this is spam, why is it giving me something that links with Facebook? I mean by that, if the notification comes in as a Facebook notification, it is actually a particular individual whom I know that has posted on Facebook what this email is saying. Does that sound normal? I'm thinking if it was spam, the email and Facebook would not align. Am I wrong?

Also, you say mark this as spam. How? It is showing presently as Norton Antipspam but it does not go into the junk file. I'll appreciate your furthered help.
