Norton auto-protect slows down Aomei Backupper

When running Aomei, Norton jumps to 20% CPU usage during the file identification stage. The Aomei backup takes about 5 minutes.

When I disable Norton auto-protect, the backup only takes 45 seconds.  The only other observation is that Windows Shadow Copy runs for a few seconds at about 10-20% CPU before Norton jumps in.  I have reinstalled Norton with same results.  I am running Windows 10.  Any ideas on how to prevent Norton from slowing down backups? maybe whitelist Aomei?

Sonar is disabled when I disable auto-protect, so I am not sure what part of Norton is responsible for the slow down.

Thanks, Daniel

Re: Norton auto-protect slows down Aomei Backupper

The time difference is obviously due to Norton scanning all files that are being accessed during your backup process. There are many layers of protection involved in Norton Security that could be involved when Auto Protect is enabled. Personally, I think it is a good idea to scan the files to ensure you are not backing up anything that might be infected.

If you do not want to disable Auto Protect for the backups, and you are really worried about a 5 minute backup, you could try scheduling the scan for a time when you are not using the computer.

Thanks for your response.  My concern is less about the 5 minute process (I also run much larger backups) and more focused on whether it is necessary/avoidable.  Norton is always protecting my system, so: do on-access scans related to a safe app help?  Is there a way to whitelist Aomei without compromising security?  If not, I agree with your suggestions.

Thanks again.

You can exclude the Aomei program from the two settings in the image below. But still not sure that will solve the issue, because it is not the program itself that Norton is scanning, but the files that program is accessing that are being scanned.

Agreed. Those options only exclude files or folders, so there is no "whitelist" for apps on file access.  Marking your first response as the solution.  -Thanks

Just a suggestion.

With a 45 second backup, without Norton, it does not sound like you are backing up very much data. Depending on the type of files you are backing up, you might be able to arrange to put them all in the same folder, and then exclude that main folder.
