Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

Hi,

I have downloaded uTorrent, and after downloading Norton quickly removed the file.

I was able to restore the file, but shortly after launching the installer i got a notification from Norton saying it blocked uTorrent from internet access.

I have since then trusted uTorrent.exe in Norton.

But now, after instaling uTorrent and trying to download something, uTorrent just doesn't start downloading.

I did some research on the problem to see if it was in uTorrent, but all similar reported cases on other forums came to the conclusion of blocked internet access.

To make a long story short how do I allow uTorrent to access internet again.

The only place I in Norton I have been able to find anything about the action was in security history, but from there I did not get the option to undo it.

Aaron

Please search the community. uTorrent contains a PUP. Therefore Norton will remove it. Use qBitorrent instead.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

Hello Aaron,

1st of all, you MUST use uTorrent with caution, or at your own risk, when it comes to Norton powered protections.

2nd,  to WORKAROUND your issue, try these steps:

  • get the admin right
  • TEMPORARILY disable Norton's Auto-Protect (Option 1) & Smart Firewall (Option 2).
  • Re-visit the official uTorrent download page, get the setup file.
  • Run the file, beware of any other offers you don't use/need. To do so, you need to choose the option "Decline Offer" or sth like that.
  • Disable the internet connection when the install of uTorrent is completed.
  • Exclude uTorrent's installation folder. For similar steps, plz refer to this comment.
  • Re-enable the said Option 1 & 2 option above.
  • Try running your uTorrent then and check if there's any changes.
  • Connect your PC to the net when everything is fine.
  • You may Report a Suspected Erroneous Detection.

Thx and luck... :)

Download qBitorrent.....And all your problems will go away. It is lighter and faster then uTorrent to begin with. Plus it contains "zero" PUPS.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

Hello zwarnar

Can you please post a screenshot of what is happening, of the actual blockage so that we may see what part of Norton is the issue.? What file did you try to download. You should not disable auto=protect and the firewall to download anything. If it is a false-positive, then submit it to the false -positive dept.

2070065, you are telling him to disconnect from the net and then to try and see if everything is ok. He is complaining that he can't connect to the net. He's not going to be able to if he's disconnected from the net.

It is much safer to just turn off download intelligence and download the file into a folder. Put that folder into the exclusion settings. Then turn on download intelligence again. Turning off auto-protect and the firewall is leaving him wide open to everything.

Thanks.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

Please search the forum. This has been brought up many of times. I helped out every one else. uTorrent installer contains a PUP therefore it is blocked by Norton. And believe you me the installer does contain a PUP. 20750065 did not say disconnect from the internet then try to download. Nor is zwarana complaining he cannot connect. Please re read the thread. Thanks. He clearly said Norton is blocking uTorrent from internet access.

Hello PSB

You have only been here for 4 + months. You have not been a member here to have answered all the threads about utorrent that is in the search if you used it. You have been told before that if you don't like something I posted then mention it by PM.

Sorry for the interruption to your thread zwarnar , although PSB should be the one apologizing,

Thanks.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

@flo,

I am going to duplicate Aaron's issue: Win 7 (VM) + NS (current) + uTorrent Stable (3.4.9 build 43085)

1. I can visit uTorrent's official site with NO problem.

2. Chrome flagged my download of µTorrent as riskware:

(Figure 1)

btw, the download & install of uTorrent can be done within few seconds. Then, Aaron can re-enable Norton protection soon.

Soon NS detected that file as unconfirmed 425123.crdownload as threat, and removed in seconds.

(Figure 2)

Then, plz re-read OP's statement:

I have downloaded uTorrent, and after downloading Norton quickly removed the file.

3. Now, I choose the Restore option to run the exe file.

(Figure 3)

So far, I am trying to run that exe as the admin user. I got the below report.

(Figure 4)

vs.

I was able to restore the file, but shortly after launching the installer i got a notification from Norton saying it blocked uTorrent from internet access.

4. Anyway, the installation GUI of uTorrent was loaded with success:

(Figure 5)

BTW, I detected zero PUP at the time of updating. Then, @Aaron, plz ignore the below quotations.

uTorrent contains a PUP. (WRONG)

uTorrent installer contains a PUP (WRONG)

(Figure 6)

(NOTE: Norton still blocked uTorrent's attempt to access some network resources, e.g., "Inbound TCP, Port 32181".)

The above Figure 4 or Figure 6 would lead to OP's:

after instaling uTorrent and trying to download something, uTorrent just doesn't start downloading.

Then @Aaron, Sorry, I am not a fan of uTorrent, I can't help you further re how to uTorrent sth from the web. And, you're not a fan of qBittorrent as well, pass that.

All in all, to workaroud Aaron's issue: exclude uTorrent + trust uTorrent, at his/her own risk.

In some (reported) cases (e.g., this one), the Norton deleted the exe without info, then I personally suggested that Aaron disable the internet connection once he/she downloaded uTorrent > disable Norton protection > exclude > restore Norton protection when exclusion is done > re-connect the PC to the web.

Thx. :)

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

UPDATES:

@Aaron:

1.

uTorrent contains a PUP. Therefore Norton will remove it.

WRONG!

2. You can still try downloading & installing uTorrent while running your Norton program (see flo's comment above).

turn off download intelligence and download the file into a folder. Put that folder into the exclusion settings. Then turn on download intelligence again.

If, your Norton remove your download and/or erase the entire installation of uTorrent automatically, I'm afraid you need to try my previous comment:

disable Norton > d/l utorrent > disconnect your system from web > install, exclude & trust utorrent > re-turn on your Norton protection > re-enable your internet connection > try downloading your stuff using uTorrent.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

uTorrent contains OpenCandy. OpenCandy is classified as a PUP. Therefore Norton blocks the installation of uTorrent. Telling people to restore an OpenCandy item is not good practice. Even Google warns of the download. The length of time someone has been a member here is irrelevant.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

OFF: uTorrent has been just detected as PUA.OpenCandy. That does not mean uTorrent contains OpenCandy:

Software known to have included OpenCandy

...

OpenCandy will trigger a "Potential threat found"... information about potentially u[n]wanted applicationS...

What is a potentially unwanted application?

After all, IT IS NOT ABOUT u, OK?

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

Now uTorrent is trying to install a fake "Norton Security Delux". Notice how Delux is spelled wrong. So it is a legit block. Norton is warning users NOT to use uTorrent. So we cannot tell users how to get around Norton's warning. Please stay clear of uTorrent.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

I have read all replies and I have decided to download qBittorrent after hearing none of the people who know what they're talking about (you) use uTorrent. I hope this solves the problem and if otherwise I will try the other solutions stated in this thread.

Thank you so much for all the helpful replies!

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

As I tried to explain to you it is best not to use uTorrent. Let me know how you like qBitorrent. As you can see by my screenshot uTorrent tired to sneak in extras if you are not careful.

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

@Aaron:

Below are 2 tips I'd like to share:

  • you may consider uninstalling uTorrent if you've restored that app from your Norton. You may follow this guide if you have trouble doing that yourself.
  • Use qBittorrent w/ caution. Because some user reported that that software could "frick around with Windows' TCP/IP drivers which is causing it to BSOD". See related info here. Then, you may install qBittorrent in VirtualBox instead.

Thx~ :)

Re: Norton blocked uTorrent from accessing internet

Been using qBitorrent for a long time now with no issues. If you read that entire thread you linked to you would see it was every since the user upgraded to MalwareBytes 3.0. He was told to revert to 2.2
