Norton can't find default browser?

Hi

My norton install can not open a browser to tell me information, it says a default web browser could not be opened, please make sure you have a default web browser.

I have Firefox as the default browser, however I tried setting Opera as default to see if it would work (windows 10 x64) and it didn't - default browser has been set in SETTINGS - DEFAULT APP

can anyone help?

thanks in advance

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

Hello snage. Norton doesn't support the Opera browser currently.

Edited: Run live updates and reboot, see if that clears the issue you are seeing.

Cheers

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

What information are you trying to get from the Norton UI?

It was info on a file it scanned, I was just playing with it, I like all the detailed information you can get from it, hw its presented and the GUI... compared to others its tops for design and features.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

I have default web browser as firefox and there is nothing in Norton for web browser (not installed), I have Firefox, Tor, Opera and Edge as browsers on my PC

I wonder if its because I am using another windows account from the one it was installed in, as this  was the problem with it constantly stuck in an updating loop.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

If you are NOT on an admin account and attempting to change settings in Norton that can be the issue. In the Norton UI (user interface), once again, I ask when its opened, whether or not IT signals Firefox is the default browser as in my screenshot? IF you have FF set as your default browser you should also see it designated there.

There are many Norton settings that are stored with the Windows account being used. So if you set up the default browser on the Norton interface while logged into one user account, it will not be carried over to any other Windows user account.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

as I said in my previous comments I have Firefox set as the default browser and nortonsays its edge but none open, the account IS an admin account...both are, but norton was installed in the other account... surely Norton should work on multiple user accounts..?  it says EDGE and EDGE works but Norton doesn't open EDGE

I can change any setting in Norton including disabling AutoProtect as its an Admin account, so i should be able to change browser>?  even if I couldnt why isnt it opening edge?

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

ok, so I uninstalled Norton again and reinstalled it on the account I use the most (both are admin) -  it reports EDGE as installed on Norton, and now it opens EDGE, but I can not get it too change to Firefox? I keep trying re-setting default browser in Windows 10 but it does not reflect in Norton...?

its no biggy, but I would like for Norton to open Firefox rather than Edge for information

Look at the second image in SoulAsylum's post above.  https://community.norton.com/en/comment/8213691#comment-8213691

Click on the Default Link beside Browser. You should  be able to change that default to Firefox.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

snadge. Look at the 1st screenshot in my previous post.  ON BOTH your windows accounts, go into your settings and check for FF being the default browser. If it isn't set to default make it so and REBOOT. Norton will detect what Windows has set as the default browser, Norton will only reflect that setting as in my 2nd screenshot.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

yeah I done all that and it still says Edge is the default browser BUT it now opens Firefox for everything except password manager...that opens in edge, im not bothered about that TBH as Im just gunna stick with LastPass anyway.

so the problem is resolved except that it 'reports' edge as the default even though it uses Firefox

screenshot: as you can see it says EDGE and no option to change it. clicking on it reveals EDGE and no option to change it, only in windows it can be changed and i have done so many times to Firefox - wierd that it now uses Firefox but displays Edge in Norton...no biggy

thanks for the assistance

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

...continued from above...

anything I click on in Internet Security(Password Manager, Password Generator and Browser Extensions) opens EDGE... all the links in the options and popups use Firefox (which is what I was after)

thanks

this is Edge as Default

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

Edge is default for anything I click on in that page... however it uses Firefox for the question marks and links in settings/popups etc.

How can I change it in Norton to display Firefox and use Firefox for the links on that page/section...?

its not an issue but would be good if we could sort it.

thanks again

 Default browser change in Windows.

.then for example click Chrome (Default) to see Chrome (Default) as You Are Protected.

FWIW ~ on my machine Norton question marks call Chrome with Chrome (Default).

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

I cant change it too Firefox, when I click on it a drop downbox appears with MICROSOFT EDGE and a TICK (in grey) written into it and clicking it does nothing, I have set Firefox as default in windows several times (keep changing it to Edge then back to Firefox in the hope that it will change in Norton) but the result is the same, still says EDGE in Norton and uses EDGE to open the links on that section - however it uses Firefox when I click on links in settings and popups

edit: the dropdown box has nothing but EDGE in it with a tick, default is Fireefox in windows

thanks

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

Okay....be aware which browser you choose from drop down ... does not set Default browser.
Browser Default is set here.

Um, do you use Firefox Sync?

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

I dont have anything to choose from. Yes I do use Firefox sync, why would that be an issue with Norton unable to detect it in that section?

IDK...on my machine, I'd sign out of Sync. I'd confirm Default apps choice works regardless of Norton.  I'd do clean Norton install.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

ive reinstalled it about 12 times over the past 24 hours due to it being stuck in updating loop, the problem there was it was originally installed in my other admin account (both admin accounts) - resolved that today by reinstalling it into the 2nd account which is now my main one. I done this just an hour or two back, so its a new fresh install fully updated?

I will install other browsers, set them as default in windows and see what Norton does

thanks for the help, I really do appreciate it :)

IDK re updating loop......on my machine... I would not do ~12 reinstalls.
I'd do Norton clean install provided all was otherwise normal.  I'd remove Norton from the equation and check all was otherwise normal.

Maybe, Chat with Official Norton Support

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

I used the Norton Removal Tool earlier to do it so it was a clean install, I used the remove only feature, rebooted, ran Ccleaner to clean up temps files etc, then I logged into my norton account and downloaded the installer, installed it, updated and rebooted and thats where i am at now.

Its more likely a windows issue, Windows has never been reliable since Windows 8, I find that i am reinstalling windows twice a year on average because of accumulating issues, never had any issues with the good old Windows 7...

thanks again, I will get in touch with Norton Support

Yes, Remove Only with fresh Norton installer..... and FWIW my Norton clean install includes scouring File Explorer and CCleaner Registry Cleaner.  Just me.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

yeah I even tried with Revo Uninstaller Pro Hunter Mode, this monitors everything the Norton Installer installs in the registry and explorer, then whe you run the uninstaller later it makes sure none are left behind after the uninstaller is run.... then reboot, reinstall, update, reboot and result is the same (this was yesterday I done that).

everything else is working fine.

no problem, thanks for the help..I'll probably try again later

cheers

I tried the "set by protocol" and "set by app" methods too but still the same. It shows as Firefox as default on them too.

not to worry its nothing serious.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

Hi snadge,

Um, do you have any Windows User account that only reports Edge.
Um, have you ever accessed Windows (hidden) System Administrator account.

Um, is it possible Norton is looking at Windows System Administrator account?
IDK

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

snage. Most of what I see as the issue are the uninstallers you are running. As far as the "hidden admin account" that account will remain hidden unless you are doing a clean windows install and do not select a user for a default account. You can use this MS guide to check whether it is enabled or disabled. If enabled disable it and reboot. See whether things change.

Re: Norton can't find default browser?

Uninstaller(s)..? - I have one and I only ever used it once to see if it would help, all other re-install attempts I did not use it  afterwards as it did not resolve the issue I had initially with the update loop problem, that was because I was trying to update/re-install in a second account when it was first installed in a different account, so their were cross-account registry conflicts. Thats been resolved, this has not. I have not been running revo every single time as you may think.

I dont have the hidden admin account active.

thanks
