Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

So after restarting the computer i noticed NIS icon appearing on the desktop (usually means NIS has updated). I checked the version number and noticed it had changed. With a smile i started my browser, logged into Norton identity safe and logged into my mail and facebook. Right after the plugin would crash in chrome, but the fun part is that it is still able to fill out logins... It's just annoying that its crashing. (the toolbar disappears aswell and if i click the icon to the right of the adress bar, the message will reappear.)

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi Salihb,

I am also experiencing this behaviour. I too have Norton Internet Security 2012 installed with the most recent update 19.8.0.14.

I also have Google Chrome Beta, version 21.0.1180.79 installed with the following plugins enabled:

Adobe Pepper Flash: 11.3.31.227

Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.271

Native Client (21.0.1180.79)

Chrome PDF Viewer (21.0.1180.79)

Google Talk v3.4.2.8800

Google Talk Video Accelerator v0.1.44.16

Microsoft Office (Office Authorization plug-in for NPAPI browsers) v14.0.4730.1010

Microsoft Office 2010 Version 14.0.4761.1000 (is an Office File Viewer plugin)

Microsoft Silverlight 5.1.10411.0

Google Update 1.3.21.115

The Norton Confidential Plugin is version 2012.5.5.11

I have the following plugins disabled:

Remoting Viewer

Adobe Acrobat PDF Plugin v10.1.4.38

There are no issues with using the Identity Safe plugin with IE 9.0.8 (32 bit). The Identity Safe plugin for IE 9 32 bit is also 2012.5.5.11.

I have not yet installed the Microsoft security updates that became available yesterday but will do so later today.

The behaviour I am experiencing is identical to yours e.g. I can log into the Identity Safe (I am using the online (cloud) version of the Identity Safe) with my passwords and then access my logins for my Gmail account. Upon successfully logging into Gmail using the Norton Identity Safe, I receive a message (a yellow information bar) at the top of the window stating that “Norton Confidential has crashed”. The Norton toolbar disappears from this point onwards.

Salihb, as you point out, Norton Confidential is still usable. If I log out of Gmail, the Identity Safe once again works as expected but crashes once I have logged back into my Gmail account. The toolbar is visible during normal browsing.

I have SSL encryption enabled for Gmail (https) but I can log into another online news account without issue (that site does not use SSL (https)).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with SP1. I also have Office 2010 SP1 64 bit and Adobe Reader 10.1.4 installed. I have enabled Microsoft EMET v3.0 (all mitigations: DEP, SEHOP, NullPage, HeapSpray, EAF, Mandatory ASLR and BottomUpASLR) on chrome.exe and on googletalkplugin.exe

@Norton: If you require any further information, please let me know. I am available to assist in any way that is necessary.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

I too have been facing the same problem of Norton Confidential crashing in Google Chrome browser ever since it got updated automatically to version 21.0..1180.79m yesterday evening. The same is working fine in IE9 and Firefox 14.0.1. My NIS 2012 is also updated to the latest version, i.e. 19.8.0.14 today. Also updated all critical patches from Microsoft thru Windows Update yesterday on my Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 based system.

I don't use Norton ID Safe though the toolbar is active on all my browser. Hope Norton IS team resolves this issue asap.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

I'm having the same problem with Chrome since updating NIS to 19.8.0.14. I am getting the message, "Norton Confidential has crashed."

Google Chrome 21.0.1180.79 m

Windows 7 64-bit SP1 with latest updates

Norton Internet Security 19.8.0.14

I do have a number of extensions, but had no trouble before the latest NIS update.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Thanks for letting us know about this problem. It sounds very similar to this ongoing issue, and has been logged with Google Chrome. It's likely to be a correlation rather than a causation, as this issue has been occurring for several months now. Let me know if you think otherwise -- that this issue is different than the one linked above -- with any details that might help us differentiate them. Thanks.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

It might be a related issue, but I remind you that it did not begin to occur until the latest NIS update... and began immediately upon updating.  The message to which you refer solves the problem by disabling an NIS feature. This is not a great marketing strategy.  If I were Symantec, I'd sure be curious as to what change in the update created the issue.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi Tony,

Thanks very much for providing the link to this issue. It appears to be the same issue but as mkeaster pointed out above, I also only begun experiencing this issue when the 19.8.0.14 update for Internet Security 2012 was installed earlier today. I was using the same version of Chrome yesterday with version 19.7.1.5 of Internet Security 2012 and the Norton Confidential plugin was working as intended.

It is good to know that it is Google’s browser at fault and it would be great if they could prioritize a resolution for this issue after all this time. For me this issue is more of an annoyance rather than an issue that breaks functionality so I am more than willing to wait on a fix.

Thank you again for this information.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Tony,

Although I do believe this is the same issue, I also agree with others that the latest NIS update has made things worse.  Rather than occassionally seeing Norton Confidential crash, it happens all the time.  Also, my Google+ basically stopped working... I wasn't able to click on any links, getting only the "Loading..." message if I did.  Disabling Norton Confidential resolved these issues, but it is only a workaround.

As others have suggested, Symantec really needs to up their game on this ... the last post from Google (if that bug report is indeed the only reason the plugin doesn't work properly) was over 3 months ago.  Either get Google to fix it, or change the plugin so it works with Chrome ... personally, I don't feel very safe with Norton Confidential disabled. A clear explanation from Symantec as to what this feature actually does (or is supposed to do) in Chrome would be helpful.

I find it shameful that two companies the size of Google and Symantec have let this major flaw go unchecked for a year now.  (according to what people have been reporting in the other thread you mentioned, although I didn't notice it until just recently)

Thanks,

Kurosh

But, for me, the question really is - can I use my computer safely when Norton Confidential has crashed?

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi younglynda,

The answer to that question is yes and no.

The reasons why I said “no”: Norton’s Confidentials purpose is to store login details either on your computer or in the cloud (Symantec’s servers) in encrypted form and enter those details using a copy and paste when required into the appropriate fields of an online form/login. This is done in order that keyloggers do not detect/read the data being sent to those websites since you are not typing those letters into those fields.

With Norton Confidential not functioning correctly you may not be able to take advantage of this added keylogger protection and the built-in phishing protection when visiting websites. I say “may” because I can still use Norton Confidential to log into websites, it only crashes after logging in. This may or may not be the same for you (it isn’t actually crashing; Google Chrome does not want to wait for it to respond and assumes it has crashed).

More information about Norton Confidential i.e. the toolbar is available from the following link:

http://us.norton.com/products/tutorials/features.jsp?pvid=nis2012&tutid=norton_toolbar

The reason why I said “yes”: Even with Norton Confidential not working correctly, Internet Security 2012 anti-malware capabilities are still fully functional and will protect you from malware (including protection from software keyloggers (if they are already installed on the computer, although this is very unlikely). Any malware detected will be resolved by it in the usual manner.

I hope this explanation is of assistance to you.

@vittorionodari:

From using an online translator, you are experiencing the same issue with IE and Firefox, if that is correct, could you provide more details? The following thread details some information that should be useful to Symantec about this crash:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Is-it-safe-to-disable-Norton-Confidential-plugin-in-Chrome/td-p/683431

Thanks.

@Kurosh: I totally agree with you, companies the size of Symantec and Google should not be making such mistakes. I have read that Symantec work closely with Mozilla to ensure the Norton toolbar works with the monthly releases of Firefox and this seems to be working well for them(although, according to vittorionodari, this may no longer be the case).

I hope the above information is of assistance to you.

Thank you.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

I wish I'd read this before I uploaded the latest Norton updates this morning. I too am on Chrome and Windows 7 and everything worked fine until after the updates.

Now whenever I try and open Gmail, Chrome gives me a message that it (Chrome) has stopped working, even though it hasn't.

I also get a drop down message from Norton stating that "Norton Confidential has crashed." This message points directly to the https portion of my Gmail address.

I hope a patch for this is released very soon, as I won't be messing around with this for long.

I am also having the same problem. I'm using Google Chrome, and just updated Norton 360. Until this update I haven't had a problem with Norton. Now Adobe Flash is a different story. It's always crashing.

Well if you know about it why dont you fix it.  It is Norton Confidential that is crashing, not Crome.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi joespley,

My post above (dated: 16th August) should be of some assistance in answering your question whether or not Norton Confidential crashing is a security risk.

Even without the anti-phishing technology, Internet Security’s anti-malware, intrusion prevention and SONAR technologies remain active. Overall there is only a minor risk.

More info about Sonar and intrusion prevention is available from the following forum threads:

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi All

I found another thread dealing with this same issue. Someone recommended going into Chrome tools, click Extensions and then uncheck Norton Identity Protection. I suppose you could delete it, but I just turned it off. That has taken care of my problem completely regarding the two issues I was having.

I have never had an issue with Flash player. Are you running Windows 7?

Kudos0

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi jeri

Thanks for the info. With that plugin disabled, does the Norton Identity Safe still function in Google Chrome? This is fine if you don’t use this feature of Internet Security and merely wish to prevent the plugin crashing but if you wish to use this feature, this workaround is only a slight improvement.

For anyone experiencing issues with Adobe Flash, please visit the Adobe Flash Support forums at

http://forums.adobe.com/community/flashplayer

Unless Internet Security is conflicting with Flash, let’s keep this thread relevant to the original issue. As you say Flash is working fine for you, I can confirm the same, so this is unlikely (but with the limited information known at this time, I could be wrong).

Thank you.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi Jim

I don't know if I'm safe  to do online banking and financial transactions with the extension disabled - I would assume not. This is a real pain in the butt. I think essentially everytime I open Chrome I'm running without Norton protection now - protection I paid quite a bit for. After reading other threads, the same thing is happening, and has been happening, in IE and other browsers as well.

To your question: Does anyone know if disabling the extension means that you are online with no Internet security aside from whatever the site you're on provides?

EDIT: Also, is Norton Identity Safe the same thing as Norton Confidential? Are we talking about the same thing or two different types of protection?

Kudos0

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi Jeri,

You are correct that performing financial transactions online is only as safe as the security the site provides (most likely SSL 128 bit encryption) in conjunction with the https protocol in use by your browser.

As for paying quite a bit for it, we all paid for this software, I am using it on 3 computers. This issue is not occurring for me with IE 9 (Updated to v9.0.9: Aug 2012) 32 bit on Windows 7 64 bit SP1 but it does occur with Google Chrome (as per my first post).

--------------------------------------------------------

To answer your question from your post above:

“you are online with no Internet security”

Absolutely NOT: I have explained the protection mechanisms of Internet Security 2012 that are still functional twice in my posts above.

--------------------------------------------------------

Yes, Norton Identity Safe is the same as Norton Confidential, prove of this is given in the following thread:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Is-it-safe-to-disable-Norton-Confidential-plugin-in-Chrome/td-p/683431

I hope this information clarifies the points you have raised in your questions. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

By the way, like the majority of users on this forum, I am simply a volunteer providing answers to questions and assisting when I can.

Just an update - 20 minutes ago I downloaded the very latest updates for my Norton 360. The problem has been resolved in my case. I turned on Norton Identity Protection in Chrome, closed my browser, restarted the computer just to make sure that any changes were going to hold, and when I logged back on I could open Gmail without the notification that Chrome had quit working, and I also didn't get the yellow bar informing me that Norton Confidential had crashed. Perhaps they have found a fix or patch. Thanks to everyone for your help and I hope the latest updates fix the issue for you, too.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

There's a conflict with the Internet Protection element of the Norton Toolbar addon. Norton is working on a fix for release via Live Update but a workaround for the time being is to disable the IP element or the toolbar. In IE you can do each of the 3 elements individually but I don't know about Chrome; they may be linked.

But it is just a workaround until the fix comes down.

It's enough to make one want to change antivirus software.

Lois,

All I can say is that Norton are not sitting around wondering what they can do next to annoy users!

They have told us here that they have a team working on a fix but one of the problems of any fix is that however small it might be (and I've no idea whether this one is large or small) it has to go through the same testing to make sure not just that it works on an immende range of different combinations of hardware and software but that it doesn't break something that works now.

You are not missing anything except perhaps having picked up that Norton is working on a fix, has been since it was identified, and that when that is completed and tested by them it will be released -- the last they said was it would be released through LiveUpdate.

You can count on an announcement when that happens.

Meanwhile there is the workaround of  disabling the Norton Internet Protection (aka Confidentiality) element in the browser add-ons until the fix comes down.

From Patrick399.  There the same fix with a shorter route in here somewhere.   This works, but it will disable this part of your Norton product.   Read all the comments, copy and save what you are interested in.   I can't imagine why admin doesn't pin the fix to the top.     Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing ChromeOptions

06-28-2012 08:34 AM

The problem is not Norton's, it is Chrome's.  Norton Confidential has been renamed to Norton Identity Protection (check coieplg.dll, properties, details).  If you use Norton Identity protection this fix may or may not affect it's function.  You will have to test it out.

Here's the fix:

Click on wrench icon, upper right hand corner of Chrome page

Click on settings

Scroll to bottom of page and click on show advanced settings

Go to Privacy, content settings, plug-ins, disable individual plug-ins, disable Norton Confidential

Haven't gotten the error message since.

Have  a nice day.

What are your thoughts on JAVA updates causing the "crash" ?

Kudos0

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

wurzel

You don't have a (+) next to your star because you can't give your own posts Kudos. I don't have one next to mine when I visit the forums either.

I haven't done recent Java updates but have done two for Adobe since my initial post. The first caused no issue. The second update for Adobe gave me the same issues - Google homepage won't load on first log-in and opening Gmail causes the error message about Chrome not working (even though it is) and I get the Norton Confidential has crashed message.

Google is constantly tweaking their system and this may all be on their end. I know in their own forums people are screaming bloody murder about this. They are also phasing out iGoogle and some other apps. Chrome has its own issues with certain things. IE9 was working alright for me but had gotten quite slow.

All I can suggest is that if people don't have updates automatically downloaded from Norton (I don't), that you check for updates daily. We're all running different browsers and different configurations of products. It will take some time to find fixes for all the variables. I've decided to just leave Norton Confidential on and when I log in for the first time, just close out the error messages and be on my merry way.

 Hi dkaltz,

The reason this isn't 'pinned to the top' is because this is not a fix at all. Chrome users are free to disable the extension if they wish, at their own risk. It's possible not all users know exactly what the extension is for. Thus putting themselves at risk for landing on fraudulent web sites, because the anti-phishing has been disabled. Identity Safe logins are now at risk with the extension disabled. Those are some of the reasons why this action is not endorsed. See this post ...

If Chrome users want to disable the extension because of the freezes, it is no longer advisable to use the Norton Toolbar or it's features for security reasons. To see how you are protected using the extension and toolbar features follow this link ...
