Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

I have a very serious problem (I'm not the only one as I saw with a search on google).

I'm using Norton Identity Safe on Chrome and the extention crashes all the time. Sometimes more than 5 or 6 times a day, which is not the only problem! First it freezes totally my browser and after that the entire computer, until I get a window that the extention has crashed with the question if I want to stop it. When I click on "ok", I get a new message that Norton Identity Safe has crashed and everything works fine.

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and my nephew uses Windows 7 Ultimate x64 + Norton Internet Security 2014
and we have both exactly the same problem! So the problem is not Vista or 7 or the 64 bit versions of windows, but the extention.

I've tried everything... removing and re-installing chrome, removing and re-installing Norton. The problem still exists!
It's getting everyday worse than better, most of all with Norton 2014 (I didn't had this problem so often with the previous 2013 version).

Is there any solution?

Just curious - do you have the same problems with Firefox or Internet Explorer?

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

I don't know, because I don't use IE or Firefox. And as long as Norton confirms officially that Chrome is being supported, it has to be supported properly! It's no secret that Identity Safe is causing problems in chrome.
A simply google search "Chrome crashes norton identity safe" and you will find many topics in various sites about it!

Hi NTG1980,

Until a solution is found, could you please momentarily disable Identity Safe in the Norton GUI and also in the browser??

Is the browser(s), working properly after??

I'm not proposing this as a workaround, just want the confirmation that this browser add-on is the culprit at 100%.

Thank you.

@ Guru: It's 21.1.0.18

@ Apostolos: A week ago I unistalled completely Identity safe and the crashes stopped.

The extention crashes most of all when I open new tabs on chrome, but it also crashes when I just have open one tab.
I know this is not a workaround. Everytime I have a problem with my PC, I try to find the solution myself. But this is not a problem which happens only to me. As I wrote before, my nephew has exactly the same problem and if you google about it "Norton Identity safe crashes Chrome" or "Norton Identity safes crashes Firefox", you will find many people complaining about it.

Just to confirm what this thread says: I use Chrome and Identity Safe crashes a few times every day causing the browser to hang until the 'Norton Identity Safe Has Crashed' dialog comes up.

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

I have Norton Internet Security 21.1.0.18 and the Identity Safe crashes all the time with Google Chrome or Firefox.  It causes the PC to come to a halt until the unresponsive window appears and then you have to kill Identity Safe in order to free up the browser.

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

I'm assuming you all have the Norton Toolbar version, rather than the stand alone version of Identity Safe ?

I run Chrome, Firefox and IE 11 and the extension works fine in all browsers, with no crashes.

It seems to work better if Live Update is brought up to date, and then launch the browsers. Also, I found in the case of Firefox, that a fresh overinstall solved any incompatibilty problems. In the case of Firefox especially, you are dealing with open source software....

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

F4E

I too have the same issues this started happening about a month ago, THIS IS NOT SOLVED YET THATS FOR SURE!!

i have tried both the stand alone and the install through N360, My version is the same as these other guys as well, its as if the IDsafe is just slow. i have login issues now as well with IE, where when i try to log in IDsafe says to login with both my email for my account and my password, i know im using the correct password because i can log in and access my account/s the only way i can getinto IE id safe is to first open N360 click on account then access norton account then go to the IDsafe page where it will then just ask for my IDsafe password only and i guess suddenly realize my account is already logged in and i can then log in to idsafe fine.

It seems they recently changed things over to where it accesses your idsafe only through the cloud,, this idea sucks if you ask me because im pretty sure thats where my issues are stemming from,,,, my internet is not that fast and idsafe having to reach the cloud everytime i want to browse im sure is making things even slower and buggier!!

They should change it back to how it was or give you the option to access locally and or through the cloud. It seems every year when they change IDsafe its gotten worse and worse,,,, I had some issues with this in the past and i just wish they would put out a product that is more user friendly!!

I just had my sister (whos not that good with computers but isnt dumb either) purchase and install N360 and she was overwhelemd with what she had to go through to set it up (3days) she had to first install n360 then, check for a new version download that install that and then run live update and make sure everything was up to date because it wasnt doing it in the backgroud like it should and then finally setting up IDsafe, getting all her passes saved and exported to a back up file,,, we spent 3 days on the phone trying get n360 set up, properly updated and backed up!

Crazy!!! do they NOT try all this stuff in beta tests before putting out thier products? You almost need to be a genius to get this A/V and Idsafe installed!!

Anyhow moral of this post is i have the same exact issues maybe worse as the others and so far no ones solved anything, the whole first page is everyone confirming that this guy had things uptodate and installed and that the issue was not anything other than IDsafe!! He said it in his first post yet everyone still ripped him one and pryed him to verify what he had already said he knew!!

So thats  my vent for this year, hopefully norton will get back on the ball and get things back in order soon but i dont forsee that happening, never did last year.

Hi, RockZ. All I can state is my own experience, and from that, assume that it's not a universal problem.

Having said that, Symantec is well aware of the situation, and we just have to be patient.

There is no point in rushing a patch out, that will cause further problems.

This Guru hasn't had any problems with Norton toolbar crashing in Chrome and surfs as much as he likes.

Remember, we are volunteers trying to assist where we can.  I know that if Gurus experience a particular problem they speak up and make sure Symantec are aware of it.

Thanks for considering.

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

Hi All,

I have done a bit of research and as a non-Chrome user, I am not sure I understand all I need to understand abuit Chrome, but I also have to wonder if those users who are experiencing crashes of say ID Safe are really experiencing ID sef crashing or if Chrome is just alerting folks to the service that was running when Chrome crashed?

Here's a few examples I have obtained from the Comcast Securtiy Boards which refers to Constant Guard Protection Suite - but points out some of the ins and outs of Chrome I was not aware of (at least as a Nopn-Chrome user) but I have to wonder if others are aware of the info also?

From a post on the Comcast Security Board dtaed 07/11/2012 10:28 AM by CGPS-Support a Comcst employee who works CGPS situations:

Hello - the issues with Chrome are ongoing, and are certainly not restricted to Constant Guard. When the Chrome session crashes, it will bring down whatever application was running when it crashed, and will list that application - it does not mean that Norton crashed Chrome, or Constant Guard crashed Chrome, or MSN crashed chrome. It means that something crashed Chrome and took that application with it.

We are hoping that the Chrome crashing issues subside with the release of Chrome 20. Due to the nature of my job, I run IE, Firefox, and Chrome with CGPS, and have seen several crashes with Chrome - but not enough to worry about - and that is dissimilar to some of the posts I've seen here, and to the ticketing which comes through our Support phones, chat, and webforms. It is still not "huge." Within the next few days we will release an update to Constant Guard Protection Suite to be released in conjunction with the next browser updates. We think that the combination of this release and the release of Chrome 20 will resolve the crashing you are seeing.

For right now - there isn't a solution other than to use IE or Firefox as the default browser, and use Chrome as your normal browser - just not set as the default. I do think this issue will be resolved between our release and the next Chrome release.

Now that said, was it in fact corrected in Version 20 of Chrome and if so - has it returned?

Not saying this is the case again - just a thought - from a non-Chrome user.

From another post by CGPS-Support on the Comcst Security Board dated 03/26/2013 11:33 AM:

What browser are you using as the default browser? We do see crashing with Chrome. Chrome does not handle the browser helper object - which is the connection between the browser and the software the same way that Firefox and IE do, and Chrome seems to be more subject to crashing the more tabs/windows are open. The April release of CGPS includes a new "handler" which should resolve much of the issues with the Chrome extension. Until then, my only suggestion would be to limit the amount of browser windows you have open at any given time.

IF your issue is with a browser other than Chrome, my suggestion would be to close the CGPS application, reset the browser settings, and then restart the CGPS. After that, go to the Manage Add Ons section for your browser to ensure that the add on for Constant Guard Protection Suite is enabled.

I don't recall number of tabs opened at the time of the crash being discussed - but I may have missed it.

From yet another post by CGPS-Support dated 01/10/2013 01:13 PM:

gjacobs101 - there IS a longer term plan to fix it, but it involves a redesign of the Chrome extension. You have probably noticed that Google Chrome does not use an add-on such as Firefox and Internet Explorer use AND that Chrome is using 2 launchers for Windows 8 - one for the Metro Mode and one for the standard desktop. Our approach is a redesign of our Browser Helper Object for chrome. For now, there is no real and solid solution to resolve the crashing with Chrome. All I can truly say is that we do not see it as severe if the customer uses fewer tabs with Chrome. The crashing is not version dependent. We are seeing the same crashing with Chrome 21 through Chrome 24. We just do not see it with IE and Firefox, and are about to release the CGPS for compatibility with Firefox 18. So, the answer is, "Yes," we are working on it and we'll release a new BHO specifically for Google in Q1, but I can't give you a more definitive answer than that. For now, you can minimize the crashing by keeping down the quantity of tabs you are using in Chrome, but be aware that this issue is not limited to Constant Guard. Other Web applications are seeing the same issue. I do not mean that as any excuse at all - just don't be surprised if you see the same issue with other applications. We aren't the only ones who are seeing the issue.

The last comment mostly concerns CGPS, but does explain some quirks of Chrome in Win 8, and alerts to possibility of other web apps being affected - by the number of tabs opened in Chrome.

Sorry for the interuption, I do not mean to hijack this thread.

A couple months ago this problem was not happening, thus we (I) did not report a problem.

Edjr60 came up with this suggestion in a previous thread.

If you have Adobe Flash player system plugin .. version 11.6.602.180 installed on your computer, make it the default flash player in Chrome. Disable Chromes built-in flash player .. Pepper Flash player. Some Chrome users have reported problems with the built-in flash player.

Type .. chrome://plugins in the address bar. Click to go to Plugins page. Click 'Details' at the upper right of the plugins page. Click 'Disable' in the Pepper Flash entry. Reboot the computer again. Keep Adobe Flash player and Chrome updated.

This may or may not resolve your issue. The Norton extension crashing is a long running problem with Chrome. Different users have different experiences. I've rarely ever had a crash with Chrome .. other users have had what you're experiencing.

Update the browser to start with and see how things go.

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

Well, after looking at some other instructions I found that "Pepper Flash player" is not listed as a stand alone player. It is a sub-part of Adobe flash player. And when that player (Adobe Flash Player) is disabled watching You Tube videos is impossable, I get the following;

Now, if I am to use my computer as I previously, and normaly used it I have to have Adobe Flash working .

So, if getting rid of "pepper flash" means getting rid of "Adobe Flash" (which I seem to need) it is not a solution worth persuing further.

There are several other ways that come to my feeble mind on how to get rid of Norton Identy Safe from being named as the cause my computer crashes. Since my goal is to get my computer to stop crashing, I hope I don't have to do any of the following; remove all Norton products from my computer (and get a refund), unplug my computer and not use it again, just be happy that I can use a crippled computer.

Now since none of the above 3 ideas solve my problem I would like to find another solution.

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

Pepper Flash seems to be a huge part of how videos and images are processed so that they can be watched in the browser Chrome;

Enable or disable Adobe Flash Player

These instructions apply to Google Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS.

  1. Type chrome:plugins in the address bar to open the Plug-ins page.
  2. On the Plug-ins page that appears, find the "Flash" listing.
    • To enable Adobe Flash Player, click the Enable link under its name.
    • To disable Adobe Flash Player completely, click the Disable link under its name.

Note: If you've previously installed Adobe Flash Player separately, you'll see two files listed for the plug-in. If both are listed as enabled, the version bundled with Chrome will be used. To enable a specific version of Adobe Flash Player, click Detailsin the upper-right corner of the page. Then click the Enable link for the version of Adobe Flash Player you want to enable. The table below shows the filename for the version that is integrated with Google Chrome.

It seems Pepper Flash is used by Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS platforms.

Norton, will you find a way to play nice with the other programs on our computers? Norton you have intruded enough, your job is to stay in the background and protect my computer and take care of Back-up duties, fight against email Spam, and keep track of log-ins and passwords. When you prevent me from using my computer the way I have used it for many years, it is your problem not the other programs on the computer.

These crashes may have more to do with the way Chrome handles plugins, rather than the way Norton integrates with Chrome.

Let's not forget that Chrome is based on Chromium which is open source software, as is Firefox.

Re: Norton Identity Safe crashes all the time - Google Chrome

FWIW -

Chrome has been my browser of choice for nearly 4 years.  There are of course a few web sites (mostly Microsoft's) that require me to use IE in order for those sites to "work correctly".  But I do use Chrome primarily, and I do so all day, and across a swath of numerous and different computer systems and devices.  The majority of the computer systems have NIS 2013 (v20) installed as their primary security application - and none have NIS 2014 (v21).  None of these systems have Chrome plugin "crashing" issues.

However, I did encounter numerous problems when I tried upgrading these systems to NIS 2014, including the non-responsive Norton plugin issues being reported in this thread. That along with v21 NTB rendering "complications" (jumpy webpage, NTB popup bars that refused to open or to close, etc. etc., etc...)

I tend to use a rather minimal amount of browser extensions anyway, but in every Chrome plugin failure case it was always the v21 Norton plugin that became the "non-responsive" problem child - always.  Deleting the other few installed extensions made no difference, Norton would lockup just the same.

I can understand this occurring on one or two particular system configurations, but not on over a dozen different configurations.

My solution to this problem was to restore these systems back to a point in time prior to their initial exposure to v21 using a hard disc recovery images made just prior to upgrading them to v21.

For purpose of further testing, I did however try uninstalling v21 and re-installing v20 on four of these systems - Every one of these system ended up exhibiting what I now call "post v21 exposure syndrome".  Namely odd browser plugin issues that prevented them from functioning as they had prior to first being exposed to the v21 upgrade.  These "test" systems were also later corrected by restoring them to a point in time prior to their exposure to v21 using boot partition recovery images.

My 2 cents worth on the matter...

Kind regards,

John

You may be on to something. If Norton was taken back to before the problems started, that might be a work-around. But, I am not smart enough to do that.

And if that is a valid solution why doesn't/hasn't Norton found this out?

Can Norton look back and figure out when this type of problem started by looking at when the complaints started?

My first problem was that I couldn't get the Norton toolbar in Chrome - I did, thanks to the help here:

For a few weeks now, my experience has been as this thread says - every time I open Chrome, I get the message "Identity Safe has crashed". Previously, to get it back I opened Internet Explorer and opened the Safe there. This made it appear in Chrome.

But today I noticed that above the error message was an arrow pointing to the website window (if that's the correct term), the one in which is displayed the website you want to go to or are on. I clicked on the empty window - lo and behold, not only did it take me to this thread but the Norton toolbar appeared too.

Yes - it's a niggle but I'm not have all the other problems outlined here.

When I looked at my Chrome settings (three thick horizontal lines, then Extensions) I saw that I had checked the "Enable Norton Identity Protection" box but below that box are two more boxes, one to "Allow in incognito" and the other to "Allow access to file URLs". Should I check both of these too?  Might the fact that I haven't be connected to the cause of the crashes?

I have already bought the 2014 Norton but am not installing it yet as I have 5 days to run on the 2013 one.

Hi Pookiehair,

As long as you you have a current subscription you can update to the new version at any time during the  subscription validity - you don't have to wait for the expiry date of your current subscription.

You can update to the current version 21.1.0.18 (2014) straight from within your Norton product, by clicking Support - New Version Check.

Follow the steps of the process, and at the end, make sure that NIS is fully updated by running LiveUpdate a few times, until no updates are available, in case rebooting as requested.

As to the renewal,"...am not installing it...", I guess you mean installing the cd?

You can renew your subscription in a quickier way by just entering the new product key:

Open NIS, at the bottom of the GUI you will see SUBSCRIPTION STATUS ...Days Remaining Renew.

Click Renew, and in the next windonw click on "I have a key or code to enter" and continue as prompted to complete the renewal.

Hope this helps.
