norton insight found more "known bad files" than Known good

Firefox popped up a weird page that looked like an intrusion ("you have been chosen ...").

trying to find a way to scan browsers for intrusion, but i couldn't.  wound up running Norton Insight, which i'd never done before.  it found more Known Bad files than Known Good files- i was totally taken aback.

why are these "bad files" even there ?

and since they are, what should i do about them ?

last, is there a way to see what the browsers' anti-malware has blocked ?  and why it didn't block that apparent intrusion ?

TY !!!!!!!!!

Hello Bigpygme. Download, install and run a full scan with Malwarebytes. It sounds like you have contracted some malware for over a billion good and bad files to be seen, something is replicating. Please let us know if this corrects the issue and what it finds. Here is how to post screenshots into your posts.

Cheers

Those "Known Good Files" and "Known Bad Files" at the top are not all on your machine but what are known to Symantec across all devices on all platforms.

Here's from my machine.

Note the little "?" next to Norton Insight at the top?

Re: norton insight found more "known bad files" than Known good

Also, it is likely that Norton will find some "bad" files on your system.  You don't need to do anything about them - in fact, you shouldn't do anything about them.  Norton Insight is a rating system based on file reputation.  Files may have bad reputations based on circumstantial criteria yet not actually be malicious.  Let Norton handle these.  If any are malicious, Norton will remove them.

Re: norton insight found more "known bad files" than Known good

thx to you both for extending yourselves to help !

ran MBAM both with and without Chameleon - it found nothing wrong.

if i get krusty's point, those good n bad file #'s have nothing to do with my computer.  V good to know.

last thing is, i don't know how to make sure Norton's web protection is working.  more to the point, i don't know how to bring it up to check a webpage when the page seems funky.  and maybe there isn't a way to do that.

so -thx lots, soulasylum and krusty.  any guidance or feedback about the last is welcome, from whomever

Hi,  Bigpygme. This article should explain Norton's protection features.

  • Exploit Prevention - protects Windows devices from so-called "zero-day" attacks that attempt to exploit undiscovered and unpatched holes (or vulnerabilities) in Windows applications or in the operating system itself.

  • Insight - identifies the files and applications that are safe or dangerous using the combined feedback of more than 175 million Norton users to identify incoming threats and proactively avert them.

  • SONAR Behavioral Protection - detects the signs that a file is dangerous to proactively protect you from new threats.

  • Always Up-to-Date - automatically downloads and installs important product or feature updates when you are not using your computer.

  • Download Insight - prevents you from downloading files from websites that have a low reputation score within the Norton user community.

  • Insight + Optimized File Copy - speeds up scan times by identifying safe files and only scanning unknown files.

  • Norton Community Watch - collects information volunteered by millions of Norton users to spot new threats faster, identify safe files, and provide stronger, more efficient protection.

  • Spam Blocking - keeps your mailbox free of unwanted, dangerous, and fraudulent emails that can steal your identity.

  • Norton Password Manager - remembers, secures, and automatically enters your user names and passwords so they cannot be lost or stolen.

  • Norton Safe Web - alerts you of unsafe websites before you visit them.

  • Internet Protection System - scours websites and social networking sites for suspicious links and content to identify the latest social networking scams.

  • Smart Two-Way Firewall - prevents strangers from accessing your home network by blocking incoming traffic determined to be unsafe.

  • Automatic Backup - Lets you automatically back up 25 GB worth of photos, movies and files you choose from your PC to the Symantec secured online storage

  • Norton Family Premier - a tool that helps keep your kids safe on the Internet, is included with your subscription. For more details, visit the Norton Family website.

It is advised you have the Norton Safe Web extension installed in your browsers.

A safe way to check Norton's Web Protection is working is by checking out the links on this website  -  https://www.amtso.org/feature-settings-check-phishing-page/

FYI, I just ran all tests and Norton blocked / passed all tests.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: norton insight found more "known bad files" than Known good

Thanks for the info.

My computer failed the Phishing test, but I don't have the Norton browser extensions installed.  It did however block the other tests on that site.

I hope Symantec gets this auto-updating thing squared away soon, this isn't a freebie service.
