Norton management website

I just noticed that the Norton management website is showing an installation count discrepancy for my NSwB installs. I currently have 3 device (seat) installations for this product key. That count correctly matches the number of Device ID entries shown at the website but the installation count shows 4 (of 10) installations (seats) in use. Why is this and what is the suggested remedy for this situation?

Kind regards,

John

Re: Norton management website

Hi, John. It might be a bug, or take just time to correct itself. I had 4 installs, and it only showed 3. When I deleted two of them, it now shows the correct number of seats used. Iow, 2.

Re: Norton management website

Thanks F4E,

I'll give it a few days and see if the reporting self-corrects. My only concern stemmed from reports being made a while back regarding seat hijacks on some user's license keys - but I also doubt that's the situation in this case.

Best,

John

Re: Norton management website

Well - It's been a few days and the "problem?" doesn't appear to be going away on its own:

Not really certain as to how I should interpret this - Does it mean that one of my three systems is now using two seats for some (peculiar and unbeknownst by me) reason, or does it mean that "a nefarious type" has managed to successfully hack my Norton account and is now using one of my licensed seats?

It's peculiar behaviors such as this that reinforces my great pleasure with my continuing success at retaining a localized vault ...

What is the Device tab showing?

Are you dual booting any on your systems?

Re: Norton management website

Hi Jim,

It's an exact match (same 3 device names) with those showing on the Services tab.

Re: Norton management website

Hi John,

Over simplification perhaps.  I noticed you are only showing "Active" Services - any chance perhaps it is picking up an additional seat from an install on say a dual booted OS on one of the 3 systems - or something funky like that?

Re: Norton management website

Hi Yank - It's been a while!

As for my using the Active Products filter; all the others (and please believe me, there are a lot of others) - Well, they are all old (officially E.O.L.) products that have long-ago expired - save for one - a very-old NIS "Trial Version" that's persisted on hanging around in the management site's product list for a few years now (also a curiosity unto itself, I suppose ).  But I decided to apply the Active only filter so just the one currently Active Norton product I still have would be shown (hoping to avoid unnecessary added confusion).

As for the three devices on which the product is installed (all PCs BTW); none of them are dual/multi-booting, nor are any either providing, nor running under, virtual implementation environments - so I think that's out as a possible causation for the misreporting issue.

FWIW: This reporting "seeming picklement" (I believe) manifested soon (if not immediately) after the latest NS Engine Liveupdate push.

Good hearing from you Yank!

Good to chat with you again - as usual I did not really think you overlooked anything.

Re: Norton management website

Have you installed Norton Mobile Security on any mobile devices?

EDIT

I may have found your extra device. My account shows 4 installs, but lists 6 devices?????  Maybe all accounts default to 4 installs??

I have asked for help with this.

Re: Norton management website

Could a user get better records from the start if he creates a new (and additional) Norton Account in "Management" website, and register some products in this new account, but other products in earlier account?

Re: Norton management website

Hi Peter,

No mobile installs, just the three PCs.

Thanks for the updated report - At least I now know that I'm not the only one seeing a reporting discrepancy at the website.  I suppose I could try uninstalling my three used seats, then revisiting the site to see if it shows one seat, ID-less, still in use ... If so, I wonder how the Norton support team might go about explaining that sort of situation?

Cheers!

Re: Norton management website

Even though I have only seen you and I with this so far, I'm sure it is probably a problem with the web site. I would wait until I hear from my question to Norton before doing anything drastic. As long as your Norton is working correctly on your devices, I would not worry.

Stay Tuned.

Re: Norton management website

Hi g_cafe,

I can't really say what might be attained by utilizing an additional Norton Account as to tracking / segregating product installations / utilizations. But I don't think Norton ever intended for User Accounts to work that way - the management site should be tracking all registered products registered to a User's Account and their related utilizations properly - and for me at least, until recently, it has.

FWIW, I had an extra Norton Account (which was mandatory at the time) that was used specifically for beta-testing prior releases of NIS and NS. Your comment prompted me to try signing into that old "testing purpose" account, but the Norton account servers no longer recognize its validity (which I would expect since those beta cycles all officially ended long ago).

Thanks,

John

Re: Norton management website

Update ...

For me this problem has been corrected. No changes done at my end (at least none that I am aware of,) so I must assume that the problem was at Symantec's end. Anyway, it's obviously been dealt with:
