Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

I am trying to import passwords from Chrome (current, i.e. Version 81.0.4044.138 (64-bit)) on Windows 10 (current, i.e. Version 1909 64-bit) to Norton Password Manager. I have downloaded the necessary zip from Norton, run the program import_password.exe, generated the norton_logins.json file, and yet repeatedly get the error message returned:

"An error occurred while uploading norton_logins.json. Please try again."

I have Norton LIfeLock Internet Security, recently 'upgraded' to the 360 product (though the window that arises from the system tray still only says 'Internet Security' so I can't be absolutely certain what product is actually running - after 20 years of subscribing to Norton through all its involutions it's near-impossible to tell).

I have removed and re-installed and enabled all four Chrome extensions that come with this program, and all four - Norton Password Manager, Norton Safe Search, Norton Home Page, Norton Safe Web - display on the toolbar as enabled, yet still the Chrome importation page for Password Manager still returns the same error.

Can anyone advise what the problem might be? (Other than just giving up on this product in exasperation once and for all and getting something simpler and cheaper instead.)

Thanks.

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

Thanks for the suggestion; I've checked and Javascript is (and already was) allowed. I've tried running the the import app again but just get the same message:
"An error occurred while uploading norton_logins.json. Please try again."

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

Gordon are you dragging and dropping the json file into the red box or clicking upload? Dropping the file there should do the job.

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

Thanks, but I've been trying to upload by both methods - dragging and dropping and selecting the file - from the start. Both return the same error. I've downloaded and overwritten the zip at least ten times now, but have now given up.

Note: Chrome nor Norton Password Manager are my daily rider.  I saved two password creds in Chrome, as test.  Export from Chrome.  Import from Norton Password Manager Settings.

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

Thanks for taking the time to suggest that, but the Norton Password Manager Chrome extension page that opens doesn't resemble the screenshot uploaded and importing a csv file is still not an option in the one that does. It states:

You must download and run the Norton Password Manager import

application to import Logins from Chrome and Firefox (32 bit only).

Master password protected browser logins are not supported.

Do not close your browser after downloading and opening the app.

These are the instructions I've been following for weeks now, and all "Technical Support" consisted of was a pasting of the instructions already online at https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v125566479?env=prod&lang=en-GB&origin=nortontoolbar&service=logins&ssdcat=135 followed by the even lazier suggestion that I should just reinstall the product altogether, which I've already done three times, with the same error result in the dozens of times I've then attempted the import.

Is there another means of importing a csv file?

My understanding is that the concerned team is aware of this issue and are working on a fix.
For now, the workaround is to export passwords from Chrome in CSV and import to Norton Password Manager.

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

Hi there, I had exactly the same problem. I couldn't find that settings button anywhere! However that's because I was using the app within Chrome. If you open your Norton 360 application from your computer (not through the internet) you can then click on "internet security", open the password manager and then find the settings to import the cvs file exported from Google, which worked a treat for me. I hope it works for you too!

Jinxamor: I couldn't find that settings button anywhere!

@Jinxamor  Sorry -

        [...]
The Merge imported data with existing data and Replace existing data with imported data options appear when you import Norton Password Manager data from a backup file. You can merge the imported data with the vault that you are currently signed in or replace the existing data stored in your vault

When you import, the file size must not be more than 15 MB for .CSV files. Also, Norton Password Manager does not allow the import of Norton Password Manager (.NPM) files.
         [...]

  1. In the Norton main window, double-click Internet Security, and then click Password Manager.

  2. In the Norton Password Manager window, click the Settings icon available at the bottom of the window.
    [...]

     8. Browse to the location of the file that you want to import.

You can access your vault backups at My Documents\Norton Password Manager Backups\<Norton account name>.

You can access your Chrome CSV export. (my text)

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

Yes, that's what I was saying I did.....but I was trying to help OP as it seemed they were using the vault from within Chrome, which looks different to how it does in the 360 app and doesn't allow you to upload the cvs file.

Basically until they fix this bug, to get around this problem:

1. Export Google passwords as CSV file (chrome settings > passwords, explained in pictures somewhere above)

2. Open Norton 360 application from computer (not in your browser)

3. Click "internet security"

4. Click "password manager"

5. click settings > import (also explained in pictures above)

I hope this helps. Seems to just be a bug that we can work around.

Re: Norton Password Manager cannot import from Chrome

You didn't actually read my message, you just copied and pasted your previous "solution", which doesn't work if you're in the Norton chrome extension instead of the Norton 360 app, as I was, and i think OP might be. So I was actually trying to give a solution to OP as they said your previous message with all the pictures hadn't helped!

Okay....I thought posting documentation [here] with related pics would be helpful.
Okay....I thought you could not find the Settings gear button because you were in the "Norton chrome extension".
I added pic pointing to Settings button for all that travel this way with steps 1 & 2 which state -
In the Norton main window -
In the Norton Password Manager window -

  1. In the Norton main window, double-click Internet Security, and then click Password Manager.

  2. In the Norton Password Manager window, click the Settings icon available at the bottom of the window.
