Norton quick scan is not completing and full scan just intializing

Norton indicated that Security needed updating but when I clicked on Fix now the quick scan says it is processing but has been running for an hour and seems to be unable to complete. The results summary shows that no files have been scanned. The security history however is showing that Norton is repeatedly blocking "unauthorized access to an open file". The "Actor" is shown as c\windows\system32\svchost.exe and the Targets are various Norton Files.

Windows is running an automatic maintenance but not sure if that was running when I started Norton. This is the first time I have needed to update Security since I installed Norton a week ago.

To my uneducated eye it looks as though there could be a conflict between Norton and Windows automatic maintenance. I am concerned that my laptop is not completely protected if files are not being scanned. I'm running Windows 8.1 Any ideas?

This is perfectly normal. Norton Tamper Protection will protect any files from accessing or getting too close to Norton files. This includes even Windows files from accessing Norton files.

As you installed Norton a week ago, what security software did you have before and how did you remove it? You need to fully remove it with the removal tool for that product.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
