Norton Safe Web Background Process for Chrome

I am not thrilled with how Norton Safe Web is implemented for Google Chrome - specifically the need to have a background process for Chrome running in the background. The same is not true for Norton Safe Web for Mozilla Firefox. I would have expected the extension implementation to be the same in Chrome as it is in Firefox. What is particularly annoying is when I run Ccleaner after closing the Chrome browser, Ccleaner detects that Chrome is still active and offers to force termination. None of this happens with Norton Safe Web in Mozilla Firefox. I really think Norton got it right with the Firefox implementation and wish Norton could implement Norton Safe Web in Chrome without the constantly running background task.

Check in Chrome Settings, scroll down and click on Advance settings. Scroll down to System, and be sure you have turned off the setting in the image below.

Re: Norton Safe Web Background Process for Chrome

Thank you peterweb - that did the trick! The "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" was turned on, so I just toggled it off and it solved my Ccleaner issue.

Not sure if related, but when replacing Norton Security Toolbar with Norton Safe Web for Chrome, a system startup entry had been added to auto launch a Chrome background task:

GoogleChromeAutoLaunch_3AB1EA3B49ECE330205A7538D7288926    Google Inc.    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --no-startup-window /prefetch:5

...and now that is gone! Not sure why it had been added or if even needed, but it is not there any more. Everything seems to be working, so I will not worry about it.

Re: Norton Safe Web Background Process for Chrome

Glad my suggestion was helpful.

How did you determine it was Norton that added the auto start item for Chrome? The changes to Norton's extensions coincided with changes in Chrome that would have come with a Chrome update around the same time. The description you quote, looks like it is a Chrome entry that was probably related to the Background app setting in Chrome. It could be that the Background app setting being on may be the new default for Chrome.

Re: Norton Safe Web Background Process for Chrome

Here is what I did. I have two computers. I made sure both were on the latest version of Chrome by using the Help -> About Google Chrome which causes Chrome to check for outstanding updates to Chrome. Saw the "Google Chrome is up to date Version 70.0.3538.77" for both. Used Ccleaner to view startup entries and neither computer had an "AutoLaunch" entry for Chrome. One computer had the "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" toggled "ON" (enabled). The second computer had that setting toggled "OFF" (disabled). I wanted to see what happens either way.

When I added the Norton Safe Web extension to the first computer (the one toggled "ON"), a message popped up briefly saying something about adding a startup entry (it displayed very briefly) and Ccleaner showed the "AutoLaunch" startup entry I copy/pasted in my earlier post.

When I added the Norton Safe Web extension to the second computer (the one toggled "OFF"), no message popped up about startup entries and Ccleaner showed nothing added.

Going back to the first computer, when I toggled the "Continue running background apps when Google is closed" from "ON" to "OFF" and then checked the list of startup entries via Ccleaner, the "AutoLaunch" entry was gone (removed).

So, not sure if it was Norton recognizing the "Continue running background apps..." setting or whether Chrome was adding the "AutoLaunch" startup entry based on some characteristic of the Norton extension combined with the "Continue running background apps..." setting in Chrome.

There was some wizardry going on but can't be 100% sure of who was behind it. Anyhow, the "Continue running background apps..." setting is "OFF" for me across the board, Ccleaner does not show any "AutoLaunch...Chrome" startup entries, and Ccleaner cleans without balking with Norton Safe Web" installed.

Sorry...long winded explanation and maybe some other factor involved, but that is how it looks to me. Thanks again for pointing me to the key setting in Chrome that got me configured as I hoped and wanted!

Re: Norton Safe Web Background Process for Chrome

Thanks for the detailed analysis.

a message popped up briefly saying something about adding a startup entry

I guess it comes down to whether Norton or Chrome presented that message. Although it does seem that installing the Norton extension prompted it. I wonder if any other extensions might prompt the same message?
